Were there any wars in history that lasted at least a few years where nobody still had any idea which side was going to win in the last few months?
>>1524669
In addition to this, were there any wars where literally nothing happened? I know of the time when Sweden (I think) declared war on Britain solely because they were pressured by Napolean. The war was official but no side has done anything.

What can /his/ tell me about the origins and history of the Turkic people? Where did they come from? Were they originally Mongolian? What was their culture like before Islam? Is "Turan" a meme? etc.
>>1524638
>Is "Turan" a meme?
Definitely. Micro-Altaic, that is just Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungusic has very little academic support, and macro-altaic, including Uralic, Japanese, Korean etc has basically none.
>>1524638
Turkic is a linguistic group, the khanates comprised of a bunch of different tribes and sometimes even peoples that weren't originally turkic, mongolic languages are closely related to the old turkic

Do you believe there were great female rulers in history?
>>1524571
No I don't believe there were, I know there were.
Not a matter of belief, there were undoubtedly great female rulers in history
>>1524571
Yes, but most of them were lesbians.
Where did western pop cultures fascination with Medieval Norse history, art, writing and myth come from?
Probably Germany
Marvel
>>1524561
>pop cultures fascination with Medieval Norse history, art, writing and myth
firstly, i dont notice it
secondly, what it does have is probably because "western" pop culture you see isn't really western, but simply Anglo. Anglo-Saxons are a germanic people, and used to venerate these things and it lives on in local folklore.

How was Japan cockblocked from gaining full control of its rightful northern boundary (Karafuto) historically? The island is under Russian occupation and has a Russian name, Sakhalin, which is wrong.

Nah mate it's Russia now, the less weirdness the better. Let's keep it on the islands they got left.

They lost the war.
People like to shit on different groups (African, Northern Europeans) for not creating great civilizations. But it seems to me that creating civilization and technological innovation is not the norm, but an exception for humanity. The stone age was longer then all of human history combined, during that time, humanity was at pretty much the same technological level, with very slow innovation. Then more advanced, city-building agricultural societies started popping up, but only in a few small areas (Mesopotamia, Nile valley, China). The rest of the word pretty much still remained in the stone age for millenia, and only advanced through contact with those few original civilization.
Creating civilization and technology is not something that's in the genes of humans. We were able to do without it for most of our history after all, regardless of the circumstances (the Ice Age isn't the only thing to blame, it barely affected the Middle-East or Africa). Instead civilization was something that happened in a few small areas by accident, proved to be really successful and spread everywhere else via conquest and trade.
>>1522509
>Civilisation
>>1522509
This also means that those groups that remained backwards for a long time did so because they were mostly isolated from the original civilizations and those that followed them. (Africans by the Sahara, Northern Europe by the forests etc., while the Mediterranean was easy to sail and the lands near the shores were fertile and ripe for settling.
>>1522509
Creating civilizations is in our genes. For all of our history we had languages, tribes that worked together and formed some level of rules/culture, and basic toolmaking. Civilization is just a growth from those basics. It's like saying big cathedrals are shit and impossible because they're made out of shitty rocks that you can find laying on the ground.
Those basic building blocks of civilization aided us in survival, as did making larger and more complex civilizations. And intelligence is pretty much the only fucking thing that allowed us to survive because every other species in the homo genus sucked dick at everything else. Hence why they're all fucking dead. The only reason we lived was because we traveled a lot, bred like rabbits comparatively, and killed everything else we came across that could threaten us. And even then at one point we almost died in a genetic bottleneck. Hence why humans are more homogenous than any other species. We're basically the inbred rednecks/niggers of the homo genus who ran around fucking everything, killing everything, and then lived long enough to go "we wuz kangz" through all of our history as we proceeded to murder each other and fuck each other over as hard as possible. Because once you're the dominant species, the only other threat left is other members of that dominant species.
And half of our valuable traits come from being dicks. Like humor potentially came off as a way to let our guard down so other people trusted us because we didn't trust one another not to pretend to say there's a lion and we run away as he fucks our wife, or he spots a lion and wanders off to "pick berries" as we get eaten. It's why our smiles don't mean "OH SHIT NIGGA, IT'S A PREDATOR!" like other primates. We had to actually laugh and let our guard down for someone else to trust us. And it's why we're good at spotting emotions and reading faces, spotting liars, body language, etc.
We're fucking dicks.
What do you think about Tolstoy's views of how history works, displayed in War and Peace ? I find it a hard pill to swallow.
But you gargled my cum perfectly last night OP
>>1522181
>I find it a hard pill to swallow.
Because you can't reconcile le epic great man theory with Tolstoy's vision?
I am mostly persuaded by how the book manages to describe the unfolding of events in a moment-to-moment, here-and-now, inner voice of many different characters.
It invites us (or me at least) to imagine that the material substance of history under our scrutiny is some combination of all of these personal experiences from different points of view. So the question then arises, how free or how constrained are we in the here and now? How much of what happens is our own making and how much is external to us?
If we suppose that history is the stage on which the wills of Napoleons and Alexanders plays out, then wouldn't we also have to suppose that the here and now is perceptibly their making? One need only blink or raise a hand to convince oneself that this is an illusion.
What is the cutoff for individual and cultural nostalgia? And why is it so deeply rooted in the human experience?
And just why are older people so awful at connecting with young people even when everything is spelled out for them? Like that time McDonald's implied people would enjoy "hitting" their burgers, or people wanking over the the Edwardian era in postwar europe
>>1521464
>And just why are older people so awful at connecting with young people even when everything is spelled out for them?
because young people are dipshits who are too glued to their fucking phones to talk to old people
>>1521464
the answer to all your questions is memories. every year we age our "cup" is filled that much more, to fully connect with youth we'd have to empty it. you might be able to understand but it will always be in comparison to your own experience.
>>1521464
>And just why are older people so awful at connecting with young people even when everything is spelled out for them?
No they aren't. It's not their fault you don't know how to intetact with people.
>tfw you look back at all the empires and nations and wars and monarchs of the world and realised it was about nothing more than petty shit like who owned what land
>struggle to see the point
We were definitely born too early to see anything cool. I know youll say "because you were born now" but we are primitive as fuck.
I struggle between two sides. I am a Tr*mp and Br*xit loving British person yet on the other hand I really do sympathise sometimes with Leftists who want everyone to shut the fuck up, stop whining, give all their money and rights to the government, and submit to the march of progress. At least that way we may see cool shit. Hungry people? Sanctity of life? Regulation of the labour market (i.e. borders)? Freedom of expression? Thats not getting us to fucking Mars, even I can admit that!
I used to see some sort of pride to be gained in entrepreneurship but I cant even see that any more. All you do is ride the wave of socially funded science and technology and jump off in a well timed manner.

>he thinks this is about muh nation muh borders vs the march of progress and hypercapitalism

Why did the homestead act end
The regions reached the population threshold of becoming a state, after that the management of that land became too great a financial burden for the individual state.

The vast majority of that remaining land is garbage and unsuitable for farming.
On a local level, there are a few towns which will give you free land if you move to them though.

What are some past generations that might be compared to our Millennial Generation (1980 - 2000) in a matter of economy, life perspective, social growth... and how they ended?

But this generation is an unique snowflake. It can not be compared to anything else: it would be extremely painful.

Some went to Mexico and fought for Maximilian, some went to Brazil. Most ended up coming back. For example, I have ancestors who had their farm seized by the freedmen's bureau despite freeing their slaves after the war broke out. The left for Brazil and stayed there until they got a letter which stated the Freedmen's bureau went tits up and the Tennessee state government was going to reseize their property and hand it over to them and they came back. Hilariously, because of Brazilian naming laws of the time I have a great great uncle named Fernando Cortes Lamb.
