Was just another proxy-war, one that was pretty similar to WWI in terms of mass wave attacks and the extensive use of gas. Had some really fucked up tactics such as child suicide squads as well as flooding marshes, then electricuting the water as troops went to pass.

In the long run it arguably strengthened Iran, as the new Islamic republic has a common cause to unite the people rather than infight
In the long run it fucked Iraq as they were broke and decided pull shit such as the Invasion of Kuwait, that their ally the US didn't approve of. Arguably linked to what has happened in Iraq since and the long term effects it's still causing now in the Middle East.

the same arguments you could use for individualism over collectivism. it's just personal interest vs. the collective group's interests except with states instead of people

Salvete, my name is Gaius Kennus.

I’m a XXVII year old Celtic Civis Romanus (Roman citizen for you barbarians). I make mosaics of historical and mythological scenes, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Roman games. (Gladiator matches, chariot races, tabula)

I train with my Gladius every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through chainmail because it has conquered over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my gladius approval two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Latin fluently, both vulgaris and the nobilis dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Roman history and their disciplina, which I follow C%

When I become a socii, I am moving to Rome to attend a prestigious Forum to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a centurion for Legio X or a senator!

I own several togas, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Rome, so I can fit in easier. I salute my elders and seniors and speak Latin as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Rome!

as an American, I wonder, why are people so vehemently opposed to abstaining from voting?

I am a plumber. I don't know anything about politics. The theory is that, I vote for a candidate that will represent me and serve my interests. But the modern system is so complicated and complex, I have no real way of knowing if I'm actually helping myself or not.

The average person doesn't understand how politics works, or how to make their country better. The average person can't even define what "making their country better" means. Economics, foreign policy, etc all these are far too abstract and vague for 90% of this country's voting population to understand.

If I were to say that I'm abstaining from voting, because it would be immoral to throw in my opinion when I KNOW that my opinion is ill-informed and worthless, suddenly everybody is throwing a fit.

I don't throw in my opinion on how my city should build a bridge, "uhh how about you make the supports 50 ft. wide". I let the engineers do that. Likewise, I should let the politically informed run our country and I should stick to doing what I do best, and spent 15 years of my life learning: fixing leaky pipes.

You're exactly right OP. I wish more people had your mindset.

But to answer your question, I'd argue it's due to the increasing prevalence of identity politics. Everyone thinks in black and white, us vs them terms so everyone feels the need to have an opinion and say in the matter. Also (as a fellow American) I think the problem is also fueled by the idea that "most countries don't have a democracy" and "youre lucky to have a voice in the political process".
>>
>>1532306
At least you do not get fined for not voting.

At least you don't have Donkey Votes

At least your Donkey Votes don't decide your leaders

I've never heard of the former but I at least know that Landsknechts were a formidable fighting force that had a reputation to follow. I'm going to say the German Landsknechts.

What does /his/ think about genetic engineering in the near future for humanity? Also do you think it will be readily available to the general public or something that is restricted to a few elites?

>>
>>1532011
horrendous implications but once the technology is out of pandoras box there's no putting it back.

genetic manipulation is the most powerful force we know of, even more than the atom bomb.

the possibilities are unimaginable as are the risks.

what I see most likely is "state sanctioned" manipulation of children to remove risks for illnesses for one, then beyond that every parent requesting their children be manipulated to be strong/smart/handsome and so on.
the end result is a society of clones in effect where everyone thinks the same, funcitons the same, and on a genetic level is more or less the same.

Liberals without spout on about how this creates an equal society when really we become a society of slaves who all think along the same lines and can be controlled in the same ways.

worse is if governments put genetic behavioral controls on people in an effort to prevent "violence" or "crime" or whatever nonsense, again making people more easily controlled.

in the long term natural births become a gamble because of all this genetic manipulation we don't know how stable it will be over generations, not to mention inevitable black market cheap-o manipulation utterly contaminating the gene-pool

all in all it means less human freedom and more grave issues.

>>1532011
would be more appropriate for >>>/sci/ to be honest, they know more about the science, its availability and applicability and so on
