what is going on with Leo I's face here, how could they make his whole head realistic looking but screw up the eyes so bad. he looks like that guy from trailer park boys.

Why does art from Late Antiquity look so shitty compared to the early Classical era? It's really apparent when you compare coinage as well.

Its quite possible he had gem or glass eyes. However, most ancient sculptures lack them because of looters.

not sure if this is the right board, but I'm having a hard time finding books that provide real-time snapshots of contemporary power dynamics between nations. Aside from CIA world factbook, Federation of American Scientists, and pic related.
For example, there are tons of books on WWII or Ancient Rome, etc that lay out a total survey of the world, troop numbers, types, infrastructure, economy, industry, food production, etc etc. But I don't know of any books or websites that provide that type of compiled information now.
>>1533890
>But I don't know of any books or websites that provide that type of compiled information now.
That would be considered state secrets?
>>1533894
The bulk of the information isn't secret though. Troop numbers, for example, or how many of what type of tanks each country has.
>>1533903
>The bulk of the information isn't secret though. Troop numbers, for example, or how many of what type of tanks each country has.
How can you justify those numbers without the accuracy of providing where/when? Which states would want to keep secret for obvious reasons.
This is all speculation though and I could be and am most certainly wrong. Have you read The Art of War? A bit old and cliche but Sun Tzu gives you numbers you need to conquer cities and what you need to conduct effective sieges.
Interesting as fudge, all ancient knoweldege though and not modern at all.
How did America go from a small bunch of agrarian freedom fighters and rebels, to one of the most expansive and domineering nations in the known world?

Imagine most of the other players start 40 hexes away, and they're all right next to eachother on a small continent.
Now imagine you start on a huge continent that's almost empty except for some civs still in the ancient age, and you've already gotten past the medieval age. Plus you started with horses AND iron AND saltpeter right next to your main cities. AND you went republic instead of monarchy.
I mean, clearly everyone else is fucked.

Wiccans: fucking retards, or misguided wishful thinkers who plug their ears to mainstream historians and archaeologists?
Why isn't there much shitposting about Buddhism here? Is it because not many westerners actually come into contact with buddhists, or because it has a more philosophical bent than the other big religions?
Is it because he was right?
Buddhism is basically the Tom Hanks of religion: you can't really dislike it no matter how hard you try, even ironically.
Thus it makes shitposting harder.
>>1533602
In the west it's a religion for emotionally shallow consumerists who change convictions every time they wake up
In the east there are many, many different sects out there and relatively few people actually trained in Buddhist epistemology.
>>1534502
It's also pretty violent in defense of itself in places that are actually Buddhist. There's some militant-ass Buddhists in the world, and there have been throughout history. Western Buddhists irritate me because I feel like they've given up on their own cultural heritage and only feel lost because they've never truly embraced it.
Lets play a game, describe a historical event poorly and/or vaguely, and we attempt to figure out what it was.

>Let us call this unknown something: God. It is nothing more than a name we assign to it. The idea of demonstrating that this unknown something (God) exists, could scarcely suggest itself to Reason. For if God does not exist it would of course be impossible to prove it; and if he does exist it would be folly to attempt it. For at the very outset, in beginning my proof, I would have presupposed it, not as doubtful but as certain (a presupposition is never doubtful, for the very reason that it is a presupposition), since otherwise I would not begin, readily understanding that the whole would be impossible if he did not exist. But if when I speak of proving God's existence I mean that I propose to prove that the Unknown, which exists, is God, then I express myself unfortunately. For in that case I do not prove anything, least of all an existence, but merely develop the content of a conception.

Why should one be a good person?
It's in your self-interest not to infuriate local power structures or society at large.
No "should" do anything. But if they choose its up to them to decide what that means.
>>1533415
But anon, nothing infuriates society at large more than people trying to be good persons.
For example : Hitler. He tried to be a good person and they hated him.
So here you go OP, don't even try.
Otherwise the masses will put your head on a spike for trying to save them.

We all know that Jews have been expelled out of Europe during the time span of thousands of years.
We are 100% certain about this and take it as a proven fact.
But what we are never being presented proven facts and documents about is the "why?".
I spent so much time in trying to find out why Jews have been expelled out of Europe for so many times over such a long timespan.
I barely found any information at all. In some cases people will even insult you for asking and ask you if youre an antisemite. Simply for asking "why were they expelled in first place?".
Look at the pic for an example of this. The Pale of Settlement was an area in the Russian Empire established in 1791 in which Jews from there were allowed to work and live. They were not allowed to live or work in the rest of the areas.
Once again this article fails to answer the "why".
It only got one very short sentence for this question that makes absolutely no sense, is based on absolutely no source and really barely gives any information at all:
>The reasons for its creation were primarily economic and nationalist.[citation needed]
Of course the Pale of Settlement is only one example out of many.
Where can I go to find more actual information about this?
Because medieval Christendom had usury laws that you could get around by using Jewish bankers.
Because governments tended to flip flop on the issue, you'd have them decide that usury was no longer acceptable and kick them out of a country. This happened frequently when somebody owed the Jews money.
Probably because the first iberians was ruled by kings who was jews. Tarquinius superbus the last jewish king of iberia was overthrown by the iberians who ruled iberia for a couple of centuries. Until sulla the great jewish general overthrew the iberians and exterminated them in the social war. Now jews was running iberia again and a iberian wasnt seen in the region again until it was sacked by alaric and the iberians eventually killed or sent the black jews to palestine. Julius caesar was jewish
>>1533338
>BY USING Jewish bankers
So you're saying the Jews only got expelled because the Christians "exploited" them to do banking for them?
