Many cultures practiced human sacrifice, and you can even see vestiges of it in the Illiad (Achilles sacrificing prisoners of war to honor Patroclus).
>>
>>1549692

And? It's well-known that the ancients practiced human sacrifice, hell, Agamemnon sacrifices his own daughter in the Illiad and he was seen as a great and noble ruler.

Why is a 2 party state any better than a 1 party state?
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1549535
It's not, a one party state gets things done while a two-party state stagnates and paves the WY for an eventual usurpation of power that becomes a one party state.
>>
>>1549535
It's not.

The entire political party concept is a scam, and should be outlawed.
>>
>>1549539
Sometimes a one party state gets things done. Usually a two party state doesn't get things done.

Does anyone know of any good reads on ancient religions, religious practices and myths? I'm very interested in the similarities between different cultures and their religious beliefs. It does get exhausting having to filter through a lot of neo pagan probably made up shit.

A lot of people poo poo Joseph Campbell for his monomyth stuff, but this book is a genuinely good and interesting read on the creation of a good myth story. Certainly goes into the similarities in some myths & cultures.

Thanks so much, anon! Will definitely check it out.

No problem man, if you enjoy it check out the TV series he did in the 80s with Bill Moyers called 'The Power of Myth', which is essentially a TV summary of that book. It's really fucking good & interesting.

Then he has some good mythology books under the Masks of God series.

How do you americans get good sources? Everytime I buy a history book on the US it feels like a russian roulette.

Are Hisotircal Societies academic? or do you resort to university presses?

Are there any good, academic magazines for history, anthropology, etc.? If so, are they thematic (colony, wars, indians, etc.)?

I sreiously think /his/ should have this sort of info on the sticky.

Pic related. I felt anxious about buying this book.

Also: why don't american historians cite any of their sources? They just aknowledge it.

What do the Japanese think about the Second World War? How much is it talked about? How are Japanese war crimes discussed as compared to American war crimes?
14 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Its a magical game of " What world war we didn't rape anyone you are mistaken "
>>
most of the population regrets the Empire's actions in WWII, with Japanese philosophy and mentality rejecting violence as a consequence of the war. People's views on war crimes are different and polarizing, with sizable groups refusing to admit to war crimes and other peoples just saying it happened and want to move on from it.

Basically it's a lot like how Americans view the Vietnam War, terrible, bloody, and a useless conflict, but it does hit closer to home due to how directly it affected the Japanese home islands.

There is notable portions of the population who want to feel that nationalistic pride again, which makes Shinzo Abe have considerable popularity with his moves to reinstate the military to take on offensive roles once more. But that feeling of weariness concerning nationalist pride is very similar in Japan to how Germans view pride towards their nation today.

What do we know about the Trojan War and Troy? Is the myth actually based off a real war or is it just a story? I've heard different opinions but none of them make sense like, "the Trojan war has nothing to do with Greece and the Troy was sacked by the Sea People" and other stuff like that. Can some /his/torian please give me a straight answer?

I've actually been to Troy. It was a historical place that existed. It was a major city in the Late Bronze Age and existed in different stages for thousands of years. It is in north-west Anatolia near the entrance to the Dardanelles.

Around 1200 BC there was chaos, it is fairly likely that the city was attacked by a large organised group of Greeks and sacked. Over the following 500 years during the so called Greek Dark Age or Geometric Period the story of the conflict was embellished and elaborated on by successive generations of court bards who turned the story into an epic involving gods and divine rage, preserving very little of the original war itself. By the time of "Homer" (if he existed at all) Greeks had rediscovered the ability to write and the story that had previously been preserved orally (as examined by scholars like Parry who studied oral poetry in 20th century Yugoslavia) was properly written down, cementing it forever in the form that we see it today. The myth was then elaborated on further by dozens of others until an entire Trojan Cycle was formed around the Iliad.

It is unlikely that any of the shit that happens in the Iliad actually happened in whatever conflict occurred with Troy, but the world that the story depicts is not too far dissimilar from what could have existed in some ways. Warriors in bronze, tribal chieftains fighting in one on one combat, chariots to move them around, all of that is reasonable. There was a city of Troy (or Wilusa as it was known to the Hittite Empire) that was a major power in Anatolia that existed at the same time as various Mycenean Greek polities based at places like Mycenae and Tiryns and so war is not out of the question. A 10 year war involving gods and divine anger is unlikely though.

Otto-Schimek--Machowa--Poland.jpg

>Otto Schimek (May 5, 1925 – November 14, 1944) was an Austrian soldier in the German Wehrmacht during World War II who served as a member of a firing squad. He was himself executed, allegedly for refusing to carry out a death sentence on Poles.

>Schimek was seventeen years old when he was drafted. He initially served in Bosnia, and was later moved to southern Poland. As Elfrida Kujak stated after the war, while on leave some time in 1943 or early 1944, Otto told her that he did not want to kill anybody, and that he would raise his gun above heads of enemies. "My conscience is clear" - Schimek allegedly said. "I will not shoot people. These people want to return home just like me. This war is not Christian."

>This behavior was swiftly noted by the Army authorities. Schimek was warned, and then put in prison. He managed to escape and tried to return to Vienna, but was caught somewhere in Czechoslovakia. Severely beaten, Otto faced court martial for desertion, but was given a final chance.

>Wehrmacht authorities decided that Schimek would be included in a firing squad. His task was to kill a Polish family from the area between Tarnów and Dębica - a father, mother and two sons, who had been caught preparing food for soldiers of the Home Army. Otto firmly refused, stating that he would not kill innocent people in Hitler's war. His superiors' reaction was quick, and Schimek was immediately sentenced to death for cowardice and desertion.

Thoughts?

A true historian already has the propensity towards becoming a hermit anyway.

No healthy sane person will bother thinking and observing other people. Especially if those other people have been dead since long ago.
