How different would the USSR have been if Trotsky won out instead of Stalin?
Or hard mode... what if Lenin survived?
>Trotsky
The Soviet Union would be more agrarian, more importance on spreading Communist ideals than actually rebuilding Russia. Due to the constant amount of Soviet support for foreign communist groups (Germany and China). The rest of the world would see Trotsky's Soviet Union as a bigger threat than the Fascists. Causing World War 2 to be Communism versus the world rather than Fascism. The Soviet Union itself would be more reliant on agriculture than industry and would probably collapse into civil war and anarchy.
>Lenin
After the five year plan, the Soviet Union would probably be like modern China, but with more emphasis on industry and the unions. However, after Lenin later death, it would probably just turn into a Oligarchy, like China. Maybe, globalization would cause Russia to be the world's industrial yard rather than China.

Hey, I've already seen this thread.
Why do people claim that Operation Barbarossa was somehow a German accomplishment?
Stalin ignored his armies and didn't even bother to fight back during the first crucial days.
>>1553260
This might come as a shock to you, but armies are supposed to be able to function without the head of state micromanaging them.
>>1553269
They were told to hold their fire.
>>1553260
>DUDE I INTENTIONALLY ALLOWED THEM TO COME CLOSE TO MY CAPITAL HUEHUHEUHEUHEUHE
Why didnt the persians just train their own hoplites?
>>1553258
Because it was easier to hire already existing Greek mercenaries.
>>1553258
They conscripted a few from vassalized greek states. Other than that it wasnt in their millitary tradition i guess? I mean they specialized on Archery and cavalry
>>1553258
They hired a shit-ton of Greek hoplites as mercenaries. It didn't work out. Also, the main strength of Alexander's armies was the sarissa pike, much longer than the dory, and most of the Greeks didn't even use it. Restructuring a huge, incredibly diverse army like the Persians had while Alexander is rampaging through their Empire isn't exactly easy to do in 12 years (the amount of time it took Alexander to conquer them.)
Why did Hindenburg ded?
He was old?
>>1553169
Yes but was it Hitler
>>1553174
No, why would he kill Hindenburg? What's the use, he already had control, the only thing he gained was a title.

Which single man did the most damage to the Roman empire(s) from the outside as an external foe? Hannibal Barca? Pyrrhus? Shapur I? Shapur II? Attila?
>>1553084
It's probably a draw between Atilla and Hannibal.
>>1553084
Jesus of Nazareth.
>>1553087
OP here, I'd say Shapur the Great personally. Death of Gordian III, a young and POPULAR handsome Roman Emperor who was the first Emperor to ever be killed in battle, the capture and abduction of Valerian, and the forcing Philip the Arab to pay a massive tribute to run back to the boarders of the Roman East on top of this leading to major economic pressure on Roman coffers and a huge loss of manpower where the Persians would push and win territory at Roman expense for over 30 years.
I have this theory, and I want to see if it's true:
Khomeini received backing from the Carter administration and BBC (check first link). The USA/UK wanted the Shah toppled because he was no longer subservient to their economic demands near the end of his reign (check second link). I believe, the primary motivation came from the USA/UK switching from allying with Iran to KSA in 1974 due to a deal William E. Simon made; William E. Simon made a deal with KSA to "neutralize crude oil as an economic weapon and find a way to persuade a hostile kingdom to finance America’s widening deficit with its newfound petrodollar wealth", but the Shah did not agree to this deal and he was called a nut by William E. Simon. (check third link):

Third link: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-05-30/the-untold-story-behind-saudi-arabia-s-41-year-u-s-debt-secret
I think even if Iran secularizes, it should try out being an ally with Russia next. Both USA/UK toppled a democratically selected leader in Iran and discreetly encouraged the Islamic Revolution when the Shah was no longer being subservient. Eternal Anglos have destroyed Iran more than Arabs.
>>1553036
No, they didn't. If anything it hurt US interests to lose the Shah who was anti-British but heavily pro-American. Imperial State of Iran under the Pahlavis, especially Reza's son, were heavily invested in augmenting their military assets and were even more prioritized when it came to US connections then Israel in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. And when inevitably the tenuous hold of the clerics fades away in Iran, it will still likely distance itself from the US.
>>1553059
Did you look at my links and evidence. The Carter administration was constantly complaining about the Shah's human rights abuses as a pretext to support Khomeini and the downfall of the Pahlavi Dynasty. Carter even called Khomeini a saint.
The Shah was starting to be sovereign after William E. Simon made a deal with Saudi Arabia, check the source I gave. This is why Carter was starting to oppose the Shah's rule. Both the BBC and Carter administration wanted the Shah gone for economic reasons. They switched from supporting Iran as a regional power to Saudi Arabia as the regional power.
>>1553076
I know of the link between the Carters and the Shah but I don't think that relates to anything tangible to aiding his fall or wanting the country to be destabilized in the first place. Regardless, they only switched to focus on the Gulf Arab states and Arabia ONCE the American hostage crisis went down after the Shah's exile.
I simply don't agree with the conspiracy theory the Americans wanted the Shah to lose power.

Did the ballista have practical use or was it just a morale killer? I recall a quote from a late Spartan soldier at the Roman use of ballistae generally being horrified at the indirect nature of it, and I've heard the Romans used upwards of 60 of them at a time, so there was clearly utility in it.
I realize demoralizing the opposition is a practical use but I'm having a hard time thinking of a better phrasing.
In rome 2 they are pretty useless.

>tfw Rome had more advancing engineering than anything the Europeans could invent until the Renaissance
It's an actually good design. It must have cost a fortune during its days. Maybe some corrupt Roman senator just had a factory of ballistas (or ties with the owners of the factories) and sold them to the military to become richer, just like the military-industrial complex nowadays does.

What are some good documentaries on central Asia?
More specifically Afghanistan and Tajikistan

I got a short one for you, OP
Other than that, Central Asia has been a great crossroads for other empires to move through. They joined up in many of the armies that moved through. Look into their traditions:'
Kyrgyzstan has a tradition of resisting Mongols. Here is the legend they pass down in song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQGO1YsByyg
Afghanistan has a tradition, more so than the rest of Central Asia, for having young boys act as dancers and sex objects for older men. It is called "Bacha bazi". Oddly enough, the Taliban hated this practice and outlawed it by punishment of death yet the U.S. occupation forces held a strict ignore and forget policy.
Uzbekistan went crazy like Turkmenistan and pulled from the Soviets in its efforts to maintain control: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky5Kzyqm37o
(Can't blame them though, look at Afghanistan's fate)
Tajikistan has a quiet history. Here is an Indian documentary about the country and its people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDuW9y-PZ5o
Hope this helps

Why are Lutheran Protestants so good but Calvinist Protestants so awful and a blight to every community they come in contact with?
>>1552759
Lutheranism is a bridge between Catholicism and Protestantism, we don't really call ourselves Protestants but median church (even though we technically started the entire thing).

So whats the big deal with pic related? Why does /his/ like it so much? Is it /k/ and /pol/ influence or is there an actual reason for this board to like it?
>>1552656
Not really. It's a moderately interesting test case of watching to see how long colonial administration could drag out it's power.
In terms of being 'proven right', it falls behind stuff like Olimi III
RHODESIANS

I'm pretty sure it is mostly /k/ and /pol/ fallout, but it is also a fairly interesting story.
I don't see why people think it's an amazing nation since I'm pretty sure it was just a bunch of colonial farmers, but I get why people are interested in it.
as many might know...the Printing Press was invented in China before Gutenberg Europe...but Gutenberg's printing press was much, much more influential and impactful, why is this?
Europe is a composition of many nations, they can not easily banned the printing like in China.
>>1552657
was that the main reason
>>1552643
European Colonization.
Because the immediate surrounding countries of China in East Asia utilized Chink-style presses, you know.

In which case, yes, it is.
