Underrated thread, desu
Let's have a Germania thread /his/,
dump pics, share any interesting facts you know, clear up misconceptions and myths, and ask any questions you have about these mysterious people.
I'll start with a couple of questions. What are sources are there other then tacitus? which are the most detailed? And why does there seem to be a big difference between bronze age germanic people and iron age? It seems that they declined in technology, wealth and sophistication. I know that trade routes with central europe broke down and that this is where they imported all their bronze tools, weapons, armour and vessels because there was no bronze in germania, but are there any other reasons?
Because some iron age germanic tribes are described by some roman sources as wearing rags, being extremely poor, barely bothering with trade and agriculture and constantly on the move and war mongering. I think it was an emperor or some other roman ruler who said this but I forget who. Does it have anything to do with pressure from other hostile barbarians like the huns, or a concerted effort to get as close to rome as possible to try and invade?
If only like 2% of Americans owned slaves, and assuming the south wasn't the only place, even if the majority was there, why do people say the South's economy was based on slavery?
Were cotton farms like today's megacorps or something?
>>1590782
>were cotton farms like today's megacorps?
Yes except even more ingrained in society and the economy. Keep in mind those 6% of southern white slave holders made up majorities in all southern legislatures. They controlled the south.
>>1590782
"King Cotton" wasn't a meme.
Remember the 3/5ths compromise? People were quick to point out that enslaved people didn't count as "people" in terms of voter representation, and that pissed off the Southerns who'd lose political power. So, they wanted representation, giving their states more political power. The North was like "so they're subhuman sometimes?"
These kinds of political shenanigans are everywhere in the history of the American South
>>1590782
2% didn't just own 1 slave. They usually employed dozens to hundreds.
So the population of slave to non-slaves are around 20% - 80% instead of 2%.

I don't know, but one time I went on a date with a girl who was studying Latin American Studies. She claimed to have a basic understanding of South American history. I asked her if she knew anything of the War of the Pacific or the Paraguayan War. She did not. I never called her back.

Not sure if I should ask this here or on /sci/ but whatever:
If human civilization collapsed and fell back to pre-industrial levels would there be enough enough resources left (ie coal, oil, uranium, rare-earth-metals) to re-ignite the industrial revolution and get us back to our current technological level? Or have we used so many of them that this is really our only chance at becoming a space-faring civilization?
I know for instance that before the industrial revolution oil was basically seeping out of the ground in some places but after we used up the easy to access sources we had to resort to deeper wells and offshore drilling. This was okay because technology was advancing as we used up oil but if you had to start again from scratch these sources would be impossible to access.
>Or have we used so many of them that this is really our only chance at becoming a space-faring civilization
pretty much
Look
If you had
One shot
Or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you capture it
Or just let it slip?
>>1590609
It wouldn't be impossible, just very hard and it would really depend on how thorough the collapse was and its cause. Whatever civilization arose again would look very different, though.
>>1590609
We would probably be forced to rely on renewables more, which would probably slow the process some, but it could also lead to more vigorous refinement and use of nuclear energy.
There's no reason we couldn't have used bio-deisel or ethanol though, just that since we already have all this coal and oil sitting around it makes sense to use it.
For pretty much all of history there was never a cohesive Indian country until 1950 that wasn't ruled by Muslims, excluding the Gupta meme that didn't really encompass so many cultures the same way modern sovereign India does. What's tying Indian nationalism together? Indians always like to talk about how India is very culturally diverse yet it remains as one country. For example, Dravidians and Northwestern Sikhs would have very little in common, but is that true? I feel like they would have more in common than the average Californian does with the average South Carolinian.
>>1590546
quite likely. a United Indian state is an unnatural idea with little basis in history
>>1590546
>How likely is an Indian Balkanisation?
I think any nation has the potential of Balkanisation. Even without having very distinctive cultures.
The exact mechanisms I do not know.
>>1590546
>shit ton of languages, religions, people
Don't know how it's still United. Maybe Hinduism, which is the major religion, is the reason.
Why was race mixing acceptable in the Spanish Empire?
>In British empire it was a taboo
>>1590544
Because it led to Catholic conversion and was considered a benevolent uplift of the lower races.
All I know is there's a reason Hispanic countries are shitholes and America, Australia, New Zealand (and, for some time, South Africa too) aren't.
>>1590555
What is it, then? Are you considering other factors like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa's much lower per capita/resource population? Are you considering the fact that the Anglospheric countries were established on top of existing weak, hunter-gatherer societies with small populations while the Spanish dealt with massive populations that already had notions of codes of law and other technologies

>He stuck a feather in his hat
And called it macaroni
What did yankee doodle mean by this?
Iirc macaroni was a posh style/stylist, and by saying that phrase they're saying "look at that dumb Yankee, he puts a feather in his hat like he's hot shit."
"Painted symbols on his purse and called Gucci Couture"
Imagine a nigger who wanted to look "swagged out" so he buys a Pontiac and claims it's a Cadillac

How has israel won most of its major wars while always having a large numbers disadvantage?
The biggest factor is that their military was considered politically reliable.
This means that decisions could be delegated to the lowest possible level, and the military in general could be much more autonomous, and thus effective.
Israel also had a modern parliamentary democracy and civil service, which supplemented this, and encouraged yet more military professionalism.
This goes over a lot of the finer details of the cultural divide.

intelligence, skill, morale, organization but number 1: arabs suck, really suck
Questionably ethical but practically sound strategy, mostly competent military control, motivated soldiers, and plenty of indirect assistance from ally states.
Alternatively, a secret army of golems powered by Jewish magiscience.
Explain this
The Scientific Revolution was a hell of a thing.
Especially if you follow it up with the Industrial Revolution.
I'd have to credit those two trends towards Europe having very secure property rights and contract law, having invented a printing press with movable type, having no slavery, and the grip of feudalism having been totally smashed by the plague.
Japan is second only to the UK in being the luckiest fucking country on Earth.

>Have a chance to wipe out the chinese, therefore saved the world from those roaches, but failed miserably in the end.
I would say un-luckiest.
>1. Either something exists or only absolutely nothing exists
>2. If oneself can experience something, it cannot be the case that only absolutely nothing exists
>3. Oneself can experience something
>4. There for something exists
(epistemological and metaphysical) nihilism btfo?
Moral nihilism is alright though, morality is a meaningless normative concept.
>>1590113
>nothing exists
that's not what nihilism means
albeit, I did google the definition and noticed that Google has it wrong too

>"Teacher, in your opinion, could the Kingdom of Lu grow stronger by emulating the dukedom of Qi?"
>"Your Majesty, the people of Qi obey the law because they fear punishment. If we respect the law because we're civil, honest, and have integrity and dignity, isn't that much better? When honorable and credible men are given office, theft and corruption will disappear. Men who care for their parents and children also care for others. Men should perform their duties while women should be given a home and family. Then orphans and widows, the old and the sick and the weak would be taken care of. Then the people will live well and work cheerfully.

Things magically work out in anarcho-bureaucracy.
Instilling respect for authority by education and culture rather than sheer force is better
>just put the right people [me] in power and everything will work out!
Confucianism is a joke.
