Why was almost nobody fat back in olden times? Surely lazy people and McDonalds and chocolate and alcoholic drinks (which have many calories) existed 50 years ago?

I don't get the reasoning behind the blinding/facial mutilation performed on pretenders to the Byzantine throne. I know that - according to them - the Emperor was supposed to reflect God's order on Earth, and as such, the Emperor had to be someone who was 'whole' and 'unblemished'. But how does that reasoning not extend to ugly people, as well? After all, if the Emperor is the reflection of Heaven's will on Earth, he should look the part, no?

But yet, we have accounts of extremely ugly - physically unappealing - Byzantine Emperors, such as John II Komnenos, who was described as "short and unusually ugly, with eyes, hair and complexion so dark he was known as 'the Moor."

I just don't understand how one can reconcile this.

Philosophy has ruined my life. Not in the sense that I've developed a strange obsession and lost friends, but rather that the ideological wall I've hit has destroyed the way I look at the world and depressed me greatly.

Let me start by saying I don't know what the hell has happened to me philosophically. I once believed in rights and believed societies could be founded on rights alone that could not be infringed, but I now ask "Why?" and have trouble seeing rights as legitimate. I think in absolutes. Rights must be either existent and all-encompassing or non-existent, because anything in between is arbitrary. But are rights merely a subjective concept with no basis in reality? This leads me to my next problem.

I don't think any subjective construct (ex. government, language) can be defined in an objective manner nor do they exist in actuality. Are they valid? It seems they're merely human constructs to make the world we live in more tolerable.

Do rights exist? Do universal truths exist? Does the subjective nature through which we understand things invalidate our understanding?

Where the hell do I go from here? Do I remain a voluntaryist or become a fascist? Do I become Max Stirner and label everything a spook?

What do I do?

Lets pretend a United Earth is formed.
Either through some grand conquest or global union or some other combination or format I can't really imagine.
In this new world order, it is split among ethnic and linguistic lines, is a democracy with equal representation and a state system where people can make laws that fits the needs of the people within without having to accommodate all without (as long as basic human rights are met). Everyone of all ages is given 15 years of education where they learn the highest standards possible, and religion has no place in the political world other than the freedom to express it.
Would this be the best possible scenario or the worst event in history?

Almost 1/3rd of Africans enslaved in the US came from Islamic and Islamic influenced regions of west Africa.

We know that some people's such as Bilali Mohammed enslaved in Sapelo Island Georgia around 1802 kept 13 pages of Islamic writings he himself wrote (pic related)

Muhammad Yaro who was a landowner, lender to merchants and a stockholder was a literate and fluent speaker in Arabic, Fulani and English was enslaved in the mid 1700's and kept faith praying east on his property

Abdul-Rahman Ibrahim ibn Sori was a prince who was eventually freed after his Arabic letter was sent to the royal Moroccan family. Eventually freed with some of his children he was sent to Sierra Leone before dying shortly after.

Many old slave songs and Negro spirituals maintain a stunning semblance to Muslim calls to prayer, in fact "Ring Shouts" a term to denote a style of singing and coming together derives from the Arabic shawṭ denoting the single circular run around the Kaaba.

In the sea islands all church's of slaves faced east towards mecca and even in my own family who were Christians and ate pork they speak of hanging the pigs they slaughtered to rid it's body of blood which they deemed was unclean. The had Gris-gris amulets derived from senegambian Muslims that originally contained verses from the Quran and "magical" substances before turning into Bible verses and substances

For many black Americans, Islam and specifically the vestiges of west African Islam was a draw to the faith from the 40's and beyond. The various groups that formed provided a vital voice that called for self determination and self sufficiency. It was a returning of sorts away from the Christian faith that enslaved them because contrary to 4chan belief Islam was not forced on West Africans for quite some time it was mostly a faith brought by trade.
