>using chainmail in warfare, as a suit of armor is a stupid idea. Don't be stupid - It's ridiculous as an idea that you can wear a suit of mail into armor into a battle. If you're wearing a cloak, you can control your movements, you know exactly when you're going to move in one direction because you are in control of those movements, and if you fall down you can just get back up again, if you're wearing armor things are completely different, how are you going to bear the weight of you and all that armor? It would be quite a burden for a person

Ok, I hate Lindy and I think his videos are generally stupid, but unless I see a source to the exact statement, I refuse to believe he said that. Put up or shut up.
>>
he can't keep getting away with this
>>
>>1649165
Did he really say that or are you paraphrasing it? Would surprise me either way considering its Lindybeige we're talking about.

Does studying the History & Humanities in depth always lead to a hatred of modernity?

It sometimes leads to an understanding of societies in relation to each other.

And sometimes it makes people think some other society, or their own, is the pinnacle of human achievement.
>>
Not to be a relativist, but it puts things in perspective. I no longer find technology and economic growth are not the most important things. I can appreciate societies that find fulfilment in other ways of life now. Another challenge is not to romanticize them though.

I enjoy Mircea Eliade very much. He is one of those people that helped me change my views of so called primitive societies.

Do any history graduates or people with relevant knowledge think that the focus of Ireland from the period 1790's-1850's about the relationship with great britain is a good dissertation topic?
My uni offers history only after 1700

Graduated last year, wrote my dissertation on Scottish linguistics in the early modern period

That's a really good idea anon. The United Irishmen rebellion and the subsequent Act of Union is sure to give you a lot of material.

Do make sure to present an interesting dissertation question though, don't be too general.
>>
>>1648710
Shouldn't you be talking about the Irish diaspora that peaked in the 1840s? Isn't that the more interesting topic?

Unless you somehow can contextualize the British-Irish relations during those happenings, if that's the case it should yield VERY interesting results.
>>
>>1648710
That covers the United Irishmen to the Great Famine, so yes. You've pretty much covered the formation of Irish Republicanism there.

Did warriors in ancient times get PTSD? Or is that a modern construct since soldiers in modern times stay in war zones for 9-15 month deployments and live under constant stress of being blown up or shot and dyin. Sometimes without even seeing the man who did it.

>>
>>1648171
Yes, they did. Ancient battles were fucking terrifying despite how short they are. The main difference is that modern battle slowly drives you insane, and it hits everyone. Ancient battle was a short concentrated period of madness that some managed to tough through.
>>
>>1648171
they smoked cannabis before during and after battle and were evolutionarily superior for it

They were also probably slightly more used to it considering they wouldn't been surrounded by high infant mortality and untreatable illness

Over the years I've noticed a particular lifestyle-trend in contemporary american culture where typically someone will be born, work hard in school to get to a good college, work hard in college (for to learn a useful trade), and work hard in adulthood for their family, children, or their retirement. Why is it that people are only allowed to look at and understand themselves late in their life, when they're old and frail and cannot understand themselves as they might've had they not worked so hard in their youth? Is it better this way, or do you advocate a different lifestyle? How do you structure your life?
7 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1648071

Why are you implying that one can only "Look at and understand themselves" when they're not "working hard"?
>>
>>1648071
Because introspection in youth, when the brain is plastic and neurogenesis and gyrification remain strong, might lead to novel thoughts. Too much novel thinking outside a small elite leads to invention, and innovative thinking. Innovative thought begets more innovative thought. Pretty soon, everyone is creative and it isn't special anymore. The global economic elite have only just managed to restrain these dangerous creative juices of the American Empire. Thanks to their patriarchical care, we can live in harmonious peace under the Golden sun, free of the sin and burden of the now-unfathomable intelligentsia.

I am happy to be a drone, and I look forward to the 10% of time at the end of my life when I will be permitted to think.

...

By the way, Dawkins calls this, "fucking autism" where we only look at nature because it is shiny and pretty, our drooling faces visibly entranced whilst abso-fucking-lutely no activity is going on in our mind.

So /his/ what do you think about John Green? I would say most of his lectures are fine even if they don't provide deep information, but then there are some that are just rubbish, like this one:

Like in your video, he gets annoying with the "muh eurocentrism" but he's still not exactly wrong, it's not like the dark ages were bad for everyone.

Most people here hate his guts though because his history is relatively simplistic and usually pushes a leftist ideology they don't agree with. Personally, I don't think he brutalizes history any worse than 90% of highschools.

I don't get it, what's wrong with this?

He pushes a leftist ideology to history, but what would history be if you didn't have opinions about it?

>This happened
>Ok

He doesn't go in depth but everything he says is accurate. The dark ages were not dark for everyone. Around the 600s, the Mayan empire was doing amazing shit as some archeolgists have found out about recently (pic related):
