In the year 3000 how do you think people will look back at us?

We'll be one of the first millenniums to have the ability of storing photographic and video data for hundreds of years. It'll be insane in even 100 years

Are any diary's, personal accounts etc from early times in history written by fairly common people?
There's tons from the Romans and Greeks but not much from times like 800 - 1000 AD. It's like a bunch of people forgot how to write , or maybe the Roman/Greek literature was better preserved or is more looked over across the centuries.

Why are the crusades so overrated? French invade and fight outnumbered Muslims, Jerusalem was defended by outnumbered Nubians for fucks sake. When the French faced real opponents they got btfo, failed invasion of eygpt, lost edessa, Saladin btfo French at hattin, French King got himself captured by Eygptians etc

Can someone post that pasta about how to distinguish the franks from the french?

Anyway, "frank" during the time of the crusades referred to western yuros. Calling them french is incorrect even if most them came from france.

>mfw playing CK2 right now
Crusades especially to the Levant are fucking pain in the butt. Half your army die on the way and if anyone decides to fuck you in the ass while you are out crusading, you have no way to defend yourself. And then even if you win and get the Kingdom of Jerusalem created, Ayrabs will jihad you every 10 years and you get zero help from Europe.

>Anyway, "frank" during the time of the crusades referred to western yuros.
If you were a Saracen in the middle ages, sure. For anyone else, especially someone from the 21st century, no, that's not how it works.

Byzantines were the righful heirs of the roman empire. The other big difference was that being greek was actually acceptable so they went with it

So besides Gibbon and Carlyle what are some other history books with good prose?

John Julius Norwich isn't much of a historian imo but he's got a penchant for cracking wise and generally being a banter merchant. He's a very witty writer, though a mediocre historian. His books are good as long as you supplement them with something more academic.

In terms of proper historians, Kathleen Hughes was also a poet in addition to her historical work and it really shows, she writes beautifully. Elizabeth Longford is the same, though some of her work is a bit outdated now. Her biography of the Duke of Wellington, Years of the Sword, is riddled with inaccuracies, though it's a very good read.

The history of the conquest of Peru and the history of the conquest of Mexico by William Prescott. They are also still good history books.

Former Soviet Union leader Josef Stalin believed that he could predict people’s character by examining their poop. He was so serious about this belief that he even dedicated a whole department of the state secret police just to examine people’s poop. The target of his poop tests were world leaders, one of whom was Mao Tse-tung.

Stalin disconnected Mao’s toilet from the sewers during his visit to Moscow in 1949 and reconnected it to special boxes, from which his poop was taken for analysis. Interestingly, Mao believed that his room was bugged by Stalin and would often shout, “I am here to do more than eat and s—,” whenever he was alone. What Mao didn’t know was that the Soviet Union didn’t have the required equipment to bug his room. Instead, Stalin stole his poop.

Any more poop stealing anecdotes?

Turkish. His opponents used to say he was an islamized jew, or a slav bevause of his colouring, but there's no proof of either.

Diomedes is the hardest motherfucker in the Iliad.

>despite being a literally who background character for much of the poem has a full on aristeia where he smashes the enemy
>longest battle frenzy in the entire poem, longer even than Achilleus' own
>starts climbing the walls of Troy
>the gods literally shit themselves at the idea of this fag breaking fate and taking Troy early
>not even a demi-god
>has a flamethrower built into his helmet
>given the ability to see the gods themselves by Athena
>almost kills Aeneas himself, the father of Troy, before he is rescued by Aphrodite
>actually straight up fucking wounds Aphrodite, a goddess considered the only one more powerful than Zeus in the Iliad itself by cutting her hand
>picks a fight with motherfucking Apollo but then wisely backs off and is told not to try fucking with Troy's destiny
>instead tosses a javelin at Ares, the god of war and destroys his avatar on the field of battle
>only stopped from continuing his slaughter of the Trojans by respecting the age old Greek custom of giving and receiving gifts
>still manages to pull a fast one and swaps some shitty bronze armour for Glaucus' expensive gold set

Can anyone even get close?

Most convincing argument is that some medical man manufactured it to give himself an air of ancient/esoteric wisdom

The writing is gibberish, since it evades all statistical and linguistic analysis

IIRC it does contain certain logic patterns in the writing so as to make of certain planned symbolic

This linguistics professor is onto something. He's taking the same approach that was taken to translate hyeroglyphs before, by identifying and transliterating proper names first.

I can't be the only one appalled by the horribly inaccurate/anachronistic portrayal of the Romans in film; e.g. The Eagle, Gladiator.

Is he the one who thinks aliens invented capitalism?
>>
>>1658482
I'm surprised you guys are talking about him. He's cool as fuck. I wonder how long it is until his next breakdown.

>>1660016
close. he thinks that capitalism itself is an alient life-form. he conceptualized intelligence as a form of reverse-entropy that organized order in matter and seeks patterns of reality to reorganize. capitalism is a higher level of order that has found a way to subordinate us into its structure. he thinks capitalism, by the point it reaches the singularity, will have incorporated machine and organic intelligence into its structures such to the point where humans voluntarily cease to exist because it will have incentivized us to commit suicide.

Has there ever been a serious attempt at making a history of this site?

We have a way of communicating with each other that could be considered its own dialect, a mixture of different layers of irony and memes that is utterly incomprehensible to outside viewers. Even subtle things that we don't even think about before using, like
>how can __________ compete
or even just
>implying

In a lot of ways the culture of this place has become more distinct than a lot of modern national cultures, and there are so many events over the past 13 years that have gone into shaping that. We don't even think about them when communicating on here, we just do it because that's how things are on this site.

A serious, academic study of the history of 4chan would probably attract a shitload of cancer here, but damn, would I like to buy one. As it is most of "our history" is passed down through anecdotal stories told by users to other users, and largely isn't even written down. From a sociological standpoint, this site is pretty much an untouched gold mine.

Why would you want to?

For the benefit of whom?

There's millions of internet forums out there, each with their own set of rules and jokes. This one is in no way unique. The concept of an internet forum is worth documenting, 4chan isn't.
