ITT: unexpected life lessons you learned from history

I've had chronic indigestion, but when reading about Charles V I learned that his deformed jaw prevented him from properly chewing his food and gave him digestion problems.

I chew my food better now and I can digest just fine. Thanks Charles V!

Charles V taught me that when barons are increasing in power, it's not a good idea to persecute a beloved religious reformer.
But seriously, Charlie V was a solid dude and taught me even the best people can overexert themselves, so it's a good idea to relax when it's prudent.

Why were so many early 20th century communists Jewish or of Jewish descent? What was it about their background that made them more likely to become communists?

Real reasons please, not "it's a Jewish plot" or whatever.

Jewish people have a history of being oppressed, therefore they would gravitate towards an ideology that is against oppression?

He was an anarcho-primitivist. He correctly realized that mankind was on a one-way ride to environmental catastrophe and he did the best he could to stop it. He targeted universities because they are the progenitors of the technology which is ruining everybody's life. In short, he was a dangerously sane man in an insane world.

I also predict in the future this will be changed again due to recent indicators like Asia's unstoppable economic growth and the decline of the western world.

UK owned Falklands, the Argentinian aggression was illegal, Argentina had basically no ability to fight back.
HK was subject of a treaty explicitly stating that it'd be returned to China, China couldn't realistically be kept from occupying it, trying to hold HK would make UK a world pariah and ultimately lead to nothing but the destruction of its economy.

Why were the Europeans utterly crushed by the Arabs and Turks in the Crusades?

What technological or leadership superiority did the Muslim factions have over those of the Christians?

Is it true Europe was rather backwards and corrupt compared to the Islamic world?
115 posts and 13 images submitted.
>>
>>1770237
There was no technological disparity between two groups. Both groups were largely armoured with mail with clothing over it to contain heat, using mainly spears, shields and swords. Arabian and Eastern horses were a bit better than their European counterparts in terms of stamina but not in great deal.

When Europeans first came they crushed through Muslims because Muslims were fractured to 4 different groups which all had infighting while also fighting Byzantines. After they reorganised they defeated Europeans because they had comparably smart tactical decisions and familiarity. There was also a more militant tradition amongst Arabs and Turks compared to Europeans at the time.
>>
>>1770237
Utterly crushed?

They conquered a bunch of land and kept it for two centuries.

Their problem was maintaining a set of principalities with a really small permanent force and seasonal erratic campaigns launched from Europe.

The linchpin of their military conquest and subsequent occupation was a mix of diplomacy, a network of castles and heavily armed cavalry.

When the Mamluke guys kicked em out they did so by systematically destroying this network of castles.

Why does modern economics treat itself like medicine or physics?

Instead of learning the history of economic models and schools of thought, economics students are taught whatever happens to be in vogue, with the implication that this is the only accurate model. Only very rarely are economics students made to actually read Smith, Ricardo, Marx, Keynes, or Friedman. Effectively, economics is taught in the exact opposite way of philosophy.

How did this come to be?
64 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Because economics are applied discipline, like medicine and unlike philosophy.
>>
>Because economics are applied discipline
>this is what econoshits actually believe

Pro tip: almost no one in the real world actually uses any of the economic models proposed by economics. The only ones who actually do are economists themselves

Is anyone else fascinated by the Meiji Restoration? It seems like something you might read in a work of fiction. How was Japan able to modernize itself so quickly and compete with the Western powers in the 20th century? This was unprecedented to the European powers, hence the reason for such embarrassment in events like the Fall of Singapore to Japanese forces in WW2. The British in particular had dominated the Chinese for decades only to have Japan give them a real challenge later on.

Why was Japan the only civilization and society that was able to understand the threat of Western imperialism and react to it in this way? What made them take this approach instead of a strategy like the Chinese that tried to isolate itself? What might the world look like today if Japan tried to isolate itself instead?

the singapore thing was really a gamble by the japanese, they knew they were outnumbered so they went around hoping to surprise them by catching them off guard

except the brits not only fell for it but overestimated the japanese numbers

japan did isolate itself, meiji restoration was reaction towards being forced from isolation by the americans, look up edo era if you want to see that it looked like

I've been reading about Commodore Perry and how the actions of the USA kick started this whole thing.

Are there any other examples of non-western societies reacting to Westerners in this way? The Japanese saw the technology and understood they had to reform if they had any hope of competing with it.
