"The celebrated Umayyads elevated religious and political persecutions, inquisitions, beheadings, impalings, and crucifixions to heights unequaled by any other set of rulers before or after in Spain," Fernandez-Morera writes. They even crucified the dead, disinterring corpses of alleged Christians in order to desecrate them. They crucified fellow Muslims – at one point, seventy-two Muslim scholars of religious law.
Crucifixions were stage-designed to be "spectacular" and cause onlookers to "faint with horror." Some victims were sliced to death slowly: first hands, then feet, then heads. One victim was crucified on the Cordoba palace door. The corpses of black children hung from a well's ropes as a counterweight.

Do your own homework.
Ghandi is walking down a street, alone. A man jumps out of the shadows "I'm going to kill you!" the man says, brandishing a knife. Does Ghandi fight back or not? Assume that the attacker is weak and unskilled so that Ghandi would be able to defeat him but at the same time he is fast enough that Ghandi would be unable to run away.
How is Gandhi to know that he could best the man in a fight? How is Gandhi to know that he could not run away?
He would probably try to reason with the man, because Gandhi did not possess a 6th sense to alert him to the presence of a metaphorical problem.
>>1794327
>How is Gandhi to know that he could best the man in a fight?
The attacker is a midget.
>>1794347
Well, if he's a midget, then Ghandi actually could just run away.

I've always heard that the decline of industry is what led to the downfall of Detroit, but no other industrial city was put through the same sort of decline. What made Detroit so uniquely shitty?

What's your favorite parable, /his/?
I'm partial to Lazarus and the Rich Man, myself, although the Parable of the Vineyard Workers is also good.

>witch-hunts actually happened
why? is it because the peasantry was bored?
I don't understand it either. It's not like worshipping satan or practising magic automatically damns one to hell.
Surely the better option would be to imprison the witches and preach the gospels to them?
People knew a lot less back then, and whenever something bad happened they didn't know what the fuck to do and why it happened, so they resorted to this kind of shit out of sheer panic

Before the 15th century, witchcraft was mostly seen as a form of natural magic, and though evil could be done through it the outcome was generally seen as the direct fault of the witch itself. One could punish an evil witch, but it was like wanting to antagonize a bully with a penchant for violence - you'd find yourself alone and most people didn't care enough to band together in a mob for what was otherwise a nuisance like any other.
It's during the 15th century that this changed, and witchcraft was gradually attributed to a more diabolic form of magic where a witch engaged in sexual debauchery and blasphemy to form a pact with a demon, or the Devil himself. While the everyday practice of popular magic didn't really change, some theologians at the time charged that since witches and demons were only allowed to do what they did by God's permission, He allowed them to cause diabolic mischief in a community because the witch offended him, and thus unleashed demons on the land to ruin crops, kill babies, cause impotence, and create storms.
Suddenly, in this view of witchcraft, a single person's occultism causes God to punish everyone, and so the logic goes witchcraft has to be cleansed from the land as an apology to God.
A lot of alien and ufo stories of abductions seem very realistic and feasible. Personally I've had several nightmares since childhood about extraterrestrials. I think the 9/11 inside job is the least credible one.

'perfidious albion' is the sad bleat of the losers at the game of nations, the lament of those who tried for greatness and fell to the mud instead, the sad cry of nations who werent smart enough, skilled enough, possessed of sufficient foresight, to win.
its the whine of nations who would have done exactly the same if they could and are pissed because it was done to them first.
perfidious albion is nothing more or less than a admission that the british were smarter

Why are people religious in 2016? Isn't religion worthless?
it's a cultural system and people are unwilling to abandon it.
I think religion is an important force in binding people together under common tradition, morality, and culture. The issue is that most of the world is dominated by Semetic relgions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) despite most of the world not being Semetic.
I think if people took more interest in reconstructing the traditions of their forebears (ancestors) while still maintaining a rational mind in daily life it would be the perfect combination.
