Did the Turkic peoples descend from indo-europeans or uralics? Or did they come from somewhere else?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1784841
Well there is a theory they came from the Xiongnu, so they could've came from the Urals.

Though I don't really know.

And of course neither will alot of people on this board.
>>
>>1784841
The Ashina clan of Mongolia was the first group to call themselves Turks.
>>
>>1784841
I would guess uralic.

Asiatic invasion of Europe has always intrigued me. Especially when you look at the map of the old world. They are neighbors.

Why have genomic tests not been done on the Iranian saltmen mummies yet?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltmen

I think this can finally end the debate to what degree contemporary Persians share ancestry with the Achaemenid and Sassanid Persians.

It is, indeed, large enough, especially if they cluster with each other.

It took until 1838 for us to know accurately how far away other stars are from our sun so we could confirm that our sun is in fact just one of many stars. Before this did people still believe that the sun wasn't a star and the stupid outdated celestial sphere stuff? And if not when did people discover the sun is just another star
6 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I believe the Sun was generally thought to be a star since at least the time of Huygens, but it was an unproven theory. It was just the dominant theory from that time until 1838 when it was definitively proven that the Sun is in fact a star
>>
>>1784350
Was Huygens himself the astronomer that changed the general consensus from celestial sphere to the sun is a star? And how was this determined before it was proven
>>
Anthropologically speaking, is sun worship the most logical of all other objects of pagan worship?

Many philosophers and scientists claim that our perception of the material universe and linear time are merely products of our mind's observation. If this is the case than what's stoping our brain from preserving our mortality by putting us into a supertask right before brain function ceases? Who's to say this hasn't already happened and you aren't just reliving your life for all eternity?

Do you need to destroy your brain to save yourself from such a hellish existence?

Oh boy my favorite country ever. This thread is about France History! We can discuss anything about their history. Before I begin I just want to say that I've looked through medieval France's battles and they won more than they lost.

Too start off the thread, let's talk about the Battle Of France ww2. Did France deserve it because they refused offer of peace?

Barely no water

Your feet hurt

You know you can't stop otherwise you will be beaten and bullied by the man who rides a horse

And when you finish your journey you may get brutally beaten and killed by the enemy

Why is it that the cultures of the House of Commons and House of Representatives evolved so differently? I understand they are totally different political systems, but that's not what I mean by culture. I mean the rambunctious nature of Parliament and the fairly strict decorum of Congress being polar opposites of the national stereotypes for both countries.

I suppose it's because politicking is scheduled, and almost CELEBRATED, both on turn of phrase, and the fact the common MP can get his chance to voice in front of the collective house.

There is less cliquey backroom built in - its a bit more open and dissent is expected, especially from your backbenchers.

The PM is also a little less restrained legislatively than el presidente - but often requires the working relationships of a majority.

Ergo, the wheel greases itself.
>>
The U.S. Congress used to be a lot more rambunctious, violent even. It's been a lot calmer since we stopped arguing about slavery.

What's a good book on geopolitics and geographic determinism?
We all know Jared Diamond is a meme author.
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1782219
It doesn't really deal with geopolitics but it does deal heavily on geographic determinism in economic development, which has geopolitical consequences. I've only read the first edition, but it's got a second edition that's even bigger and better.

Thomas Sowell's always got really clear prose as well, so it's not a difficult read either.
>>
>>1782414
I was looking into this, I'm pleased to see it got an endorsement so early in the thread.
I'll definitely check it out.
>>
>>1782466
It's a great read, but the answer he comes up with for the influence of geography on human development is essentially "it does influence it, but to what extent it does depends on each case." Geography can hinder or help human advancement, but it's not the deciding factor. The book looks at other reasons for further human economic development, which can definitely compliment the "it depends" answer.

Another thing you might be interested in, if you're reading about geographic determinism, is the role of geography in the development of Russia. Because of its size and the environment's harshness, its geography has played an oversized role in its development. CaspianReport did a nice little intro video on it if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE6rSljTwdU

STRATFOR has lots of neat videos on geographic challenges countries face, such as their Russia one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6LIhNgsQoc

The China one is pretty comfy too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8uWoBtCkg8

What's the point of caring about most history when it's just killers having wars about land and primitive trade routes? Studying history of course is about social posturing but I think also a yearning to go back to simpler times.

I pay so much attention to politics these days and when I disengage for a few days from it it's like I come up for air and gain the perspective that it's all pointless bullshit, both past and present.
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I agree with you OP, however exactly because it's pointless you have the luxury of studying it purely out of interest.
>>
Study the past so mistakes are not repeated.
>>
History is the entire recorded body of human activity and accomplishments

Literally no better place to draw upon to learn just about anything about anything, including the present and the future
