Religion holds humanity back in a lot of ways. Galileo, creationism, all that sort of thing. So once religion is dead, will humanity begin to progress much faster, ethically and scientifically?

Let's just talk about the early stages then.

I'd say that the only way for South Africa to survive would be genocide of the immigrant blacks.

Domestically? Almost indefinitely.
The security situation in South Africa was almost always secured and even in the worst of the dissent the homelands were maintained.
Umkhonto We Sizwe couldn't even scratch the SADF, it barely hurt much national/civilian infrastructure.

Internationally however the powers that be determined that it could not continue and lathered on the economic and political sanctions to force such.

Redpill me on crossbows, /his/

Could they pierce 12th century chainmail, or 14-15th century plate armor? Were crossbows as good as the Pope made them out to be, and supposedly had them banned?

Please don't come into this thread trying to tell me that longbows could pierce plate armor, because they couldn't

>Artem autem illam mortiferam et deo odibilem ballistariorum et sagittariorum adversus christianos et catholicos exerceri de cetero sub anathemate prohibemus.
>Comment. The reference seems to be to a sort of tournament, the nature of which was the shooting of arrows and other projectiles on a wager. The practice had already been condemned by Urban II in canon 7 of the Lateran Synod of 1097, no doubt because of the it involved. [[41]]
>>

They could certainly pierce mail since mail is quite weak to piercing attacks in general since breaking a ring is not that tough. From the fact that plate continued to be used very frequently and with great success untill the gunpowder age and to some extent beyond and the fact that normal arrows don't do much against plate we can assume they weren't that effective against plate. Of course most soldiers weren't wearing full plate, it's likely that were rather effective in general since despite what modern media tells you about the effectivenes of armour it actually does work very well combined with a weapon that can just deal with the common soldiers armour would be pretty deadly. The 420 no scoping nobles all day is probably just a meme though.

>mail is quite weak to piercing attacks in general since breaking a ring is not that tough.
then why is it still used today to protect against stabbing attacks and for shark protection?

Princess Olga was the wife of Igor of Kiev, who was killed by the Drevlians. At the time of her husband's death, their son Svyatoslav was three years old, making Olga the official ruler of Kievan Rus until he reached adulthood. The Drevlians wanted Olga to marry their Prince Mal, making him the ruler of Kievan Rus, but Olga was determined to remain in power and preserve it for her son.
The Drevlians sent twenty of their best men to persuade Olga to marry their Prince Mal and give up her rule of Kievan Rus. She had them buried alive. Then she sent word to Prince Mal that she accepted the proposal, but required their most distinguished men to accompany her on the journey in order for her people to accept the offer of marriage. The Drevlians sent their best men who governed their land. Upon their arrival, she offered them a warm welcome and an invitation to clean up after their long journey in a bathhouse. After they entered, she locked the doors and set fire to the building, burning them alive.

With the best and wisest men out of the way, she planned to destroy the remaining Drevlians. She invited them to a funeral feast so she could mourn over her husband's grave, where her servants waited on them. After the Drevlians were drunk, Olga's soldiers killed over 5,000 of them. She returned to Kiev and prepared an army to attack the survivors. The Drevlians begged for mercy and offered to pay for their freedom with honey and furs.

She asked for three pigeons and three sparrows from each house, since she did not want to burden the villagers any further after the siege. They were happy to comply with such a reasonable request.
Now Olga gave to each soldier in her army a pigeon or a sparrow, and ordered them to attach by thread to each pigeon and sparrow a piece of sulfur bound with small pieces of cloth. When night fell, Olga bade her soldiers release the pigeons and the sparrows. So the birds flew to their nests, the pigeons to the cotes, and the sparrows under the eaves. The dove-cotes, the coops, the porches, and the haymows were set on fire. There was not a house that was not consumed, and it was impossible to extinguish the flames, because all the houses caught on fire at once. The people fled from the city, and Olga ordered her soldiers to catch them. Thus she took the city and burned it, and captured the elders of the city. Some of the other captives she killed, while some she gave to others as slaves to her followers.
Now princess Olga is St. Olga of Kiev in Orthodox Church.

>judaism focuses on the here and now instead of waiting for a savior to save them

>judaism has a culture based on studying, knowledge preservation, and personal interpertation on religious text

>judaism is relatively conservative but not in the same tier as Islam

Is judaism the best of the abrahamic religions? It seems in Christianity, many people wait for salvation even if it won't come in their lifetimes, and that in Islam, it seems like a religion designed to pump out worker/soldier bees.

Nowadays there are centuries of different norms and values at our disposal to identify with. Thus, one maybe conflicted with defying this current age and its normalized standards while relating solely to another culture in time that is no longer looked up upon.

It this normal, as in it this actually sane? Can history alter one's perception in ways that are off the norm?
Are personal experience and knowledge of the past accepted behaviors supposed to bring us closer to the contemporay norm? Or is defiance a correct reaction? Speak what's on your mind to help some anon understand his edginess.

I can't speak to the morality of the act itself, because that is dependent on the meta-ethical view we're talking about.

But I WILL say that identifying with distant (geographic and historical) peoples is what ended the dark ages and created the Renaissance. So the act definitely has the potential to revolutionize a populace. Furthermore, the case acts a precedent for the idea that other cultures and times would be better or at the least can be learned from.

Pic related.

Is ancestor worship consistent with believing in reincarnation? As far as I know, if you reincarnate, you are not able to protect your relatives from the afterlife. However, East Asian cultures understand that it actually is and they have been practising syncretism for years.

I don't know if I'm making myself clear. Please bros, help me with this question

What does /his/ think about war reenactments?

When I was a little kid, my dad and I used to go to pretty much all of the ones which happened in the area where I live. I always liked the camps and skirmishes. I know it's kind of campy and dorky, but lately I've had a desire to check some out again, or maybe even take a shot at actually reenacting myself. Any of you guys have much experience with this kind of thing?
