Could some of the more people here with knowledge of Buddhism answer a question for me?
I don't understand why paranirvana should be the desired goal, especially since Buddhism - unlike Hinduism and Jainism - does not believe in an eternal and underlying soul/self (atman) that literally is at the core of each individual and is transferred during the cycles of rebirth. In Buddhism, the aggregates that comprise an 'individual' are all reactions to the external stimuli of samsara: the 'individual' ceases to exist completely upon death, and reincarnation is only the awakening of 'individuality' (awareness/sentience) in a new being. So since the supposed Self ceases to exist after death, why is paranirvana - the snuffing out of this Self that will cease to exist upon death anyways - so desired?

I can't understand this, why would the Persians lose a battle and say "well, guess we lose all our territory within a thousand mile radius." No other war in history has been like this, even the Mongols had to win several battles in order to subjugate a place, but Alexander just won a battle and with is humongous amounts of territory.

The Minoan Civilization should be given a lot more respect than it currently gets. Most people have never heard of them! People consider the Greeks to be the founders of Western Civilization but who knows where they would be without the Minoans. They were conquered by the Mycenaeans but for thousands of years before that, Minoan art and architecture influenced the Mycenaeans which in turn influenced the Greeks. Just look at this Minoan fresco, it looks Greek. The profiles of the ladies adhere to the Greek standard of beauty. The Minoans pioneered use of columns in their palaces to create open, light spaces, which became one of the cornerstones of Greek architecture. Without the Minoans there may have been no Temple of Artemis, the Greek's most iconic structure. The Minoan's writing system is a direct ancestor of the Greek alphabet. And they arrived over 2000 years before the Greeks, Europe's first Civilization. We know so little about these people but I wouldn't be surprised if you could trace a lot more of Greek culture back to them. Fascinating people and not given nearly enough credit for what they did.
