Leaders? Thinkers? Technologists?
Which has the greatest effect on humanity and the direction of society?
Alexander the Great? Aristotle? Archimedes?
They aren't exactly complete contemporaries, but who matters more?
Who would you rather be?
They all play a significant role in the world. The thinkers envision the goals, the technologists invent the means to achieve them better, and the leaders utilize the means and take us to our goals.
It's like if the leader was the pilot, the thinker had the map, and the technologist made the plane.
I'd rather be the leader, but I'd be happy enough as the thinker. I'm not really any of them though.
It is hard to compare broad group of a leaders with broad group of technologist. There exist inventions and technology that changed world more than any greatest leaders, for example.
I would say that the leaders matter less in the end because they can't really change society on deep, meaningful level. Power is always zero sum game. If you exclude Alexander, then someone else take title of the greatest ruler. All borders and all states would be different but majority of people lives stay the same. Exclude guy who comes up with some important original ideas and they are gone forever.
Why did so many Islamic sects (Alawites, Nusayris, Dhammites, etc.) end up worshiping Ali as a literal God?
>>1884173
>Prince Ali, holy is he
>Alahu ackbar
>infidels all go to hell
>send 'em there quick
Fucking seriously genie

Is there one monotheistic religion besides Judaism that didn't slide back into polytheism?

Sunni Islam
Hello /his/
What do you think are the major turning points in history of humanity?
How would the world look, if those events didn't happen?
I'll start:
Killing of Franz Ferdinand.
Probably the biggest turning point on the history of the world, that sparked WW1. If this man would not take a turn in Serbia, he'd be alive, and WW1 would not start.
Without WW1, there would be:
>no famine in Europe,
>no big losses in human life,
>no Armenian genocide.
>Ottoman Empire wouldn't crumble
>Balance in the middle east wouldn't be shifted, so Shia, Sunni and Kurds probably wouldn't start killing each other, and they wouldn't turn into terrorists.
>USA never becomes a super power - without selling arms to European countries, they don't get wealth to become a superpower
>Hitler, and Mussolini don't see WW1, their countries don't face post WW1 bad economy, so there's no Fascism and Nazism
>Russia doesn't suffer from the Revolution, so there's no Communism
>WW2 doesn't happen
>Israel isn't created and doesn't get support from other countries
>lack of the WW1, WW2 and Cold War means no arms and tech-race. We'd be probably set back in tech by about 60 years.
What do you think of that reasoning, /his/?

>What do you think are the major turning points in history of humanity?
all of them

Why is Britain even a country?
>>1883803
Because Britain isn't a country you retard
The U.S betrayed the UK at the Suez Canal and has cucked them since.
Prove me Wrong.
Pro tip: You can't
The US betrayed Britain long before that.
The US supplied aid to Britain in WW2 only if their demands to dismantle the Empire were met.
The two countries' continuing friendship is bizarre.
>>1883643
The U.S also made plans to go to war with the British Empire in the late 20s, early 30. (Its called War Plan Red for those who want to look it up)
>>1883632
The us needed to keep up appearance (I.e. not annex territory) in order to counter the Soviet Unions anti-imperialist rhetoric. Therefor, it couldn't support allies imperialistic endeavors.
Why is 'You shall have no other gods before me' in the Ten Commandments? What does it mean to have other gods before God?
Does it mean God acknowledges existence of other deities? Or that we shouldn't venerate some non-entity into godhood?
The ancient Hebrews were originally henotheists

This, and most romans that converted were sol Invictus worshipers anyways, why do you think christianity and sol invictus worshippers had so much in common
Who was in the wrong here?
Voltaire
whoever owned all those red points

the hansa?
Why did France fight so poorly in the Franco Prussian war?
>>1883510
Because France's entire military strength came from having a large population and Germany had a larger population.
>>1883510
railroads
>>1883510
>France fights for Republic in Revolutionary War
>beats the entirety of Europe
>France fights under dictatorship in 1879
>gets destroyed
>France fights under fledgling socialist dictatorship in WW2
>surrenders
You can graph French military success against how much liberty, equality and fraternity they enjoyed. Note how after 1804/1805 Napoleon's fortunes slowly declined.
Tell me about chinese contact with the west in history.
When was the earliest? Did they have contact with Rome?
>>1883500
How the fuck does one even come up with that...
>>1883500
Imagine how europeans reacted to chinese for the first time.

That sketch? Actually not far from the truth.
Hello, /his/.
Are there any chronicles or documents written during the Crusades that talk about handicapped or diseased and dying knights that where nonetheless fielded and present on the battlefield or were otherwise serving in the Holy Lands in garrisons or doing other duties? I'm interested to see weather there are documented cases of knights going to battle despite having missing limbs or suffering from ailments.
I know of Baudouin the IVth of Jerusalem's 11 year reign but otherwise I haven't heard about such cases.
Order of Saint Lazarus
>>1883409
i doubt they took lepers to battle
>>1883589
Why not? They have a bonus to stun resistance.
Is she, yea I say it, Our Lady?
Yes, the MOTHER of God.
No Mary no Jesus

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To you we cry, the children of Eve;
to you we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this land of exile.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us;
lead us home at the end
and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus:
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Amen.
