Hi, I'm Erwin Rommel and this is Jackass.
>african "front"
who cares
>>1883655
Wavell did nothing wrong.
>>1883655
Rommel was only sent to North Africa to defend Italian Libya. He invaded Egypt despite Hitler's orders, hoping that he could take all of Egypt and British Middle East AND drive all the way through Iraq and Iran to Azerbaijan to attack the USSR on a new front. He hoped to achieve this only with his Africa Korps and Italian divisions.
Rommel was an even worse strategist then Hitler.
Does Greek mythology allow you to defeat the Gods through hard work and dedication?
>>1883451
I thought the whole point of Greek mythology was that the Gods are a bunch of asshole children with superpowers who will always come out on top and fuck with people on a whim.
No, I don't think so.
>>1883451
No. Hard work and dedication gets the Gods mad at you for showing them up, and then they visit some kind of horrible curse on you.
>>1883451
Hector was a hard worker and look what happened to him.
So when and why did anime become popular in the Western world?
Anime is not 'popular' by any stretch of the imagination.
>>1883448
It is in France.
>>1883442
How many counties else make popular traditonal animation?
By what standards are a land considered as rightful ownership of a certain nation, state, or race?
By other countries agreeing to it.
Turkish Cyprus exists in reality, but no other countries accept it, so it appears on no maps.
Off the top of my head, also Western Sahara.

If G-d says you own the land, you do. G-d is above any human court.
what do you think would have happened if the Allies fought alongside the Nazis against the USSR?
Ussr would've lost
Allies wouldn't have won against the nazis without ussr though, just to put your hypothetical into perspective.
>>1883095
>Allies wouldn't have won against the nazis without ussr though
meme
>>1883125
not a meme. there would have been at least three nukes dropped in WWII if the USSR didn't curbstomp germany.

I think its speculated that the diseases spread with merchants from the mongol empire.
>>1883005
Black Death was pretty bad. But as far as historical plagues that absolutely fucked shit up I'd probably have to say smallpox and the various other diseases that decimated the American Indians.
We still have a lot of Europe's history despite the black death. Whereas we're missing a lot of American Indian stuff.

Jules Joseph Lefebvre (French: [ʒyl ʒɔzɛf ləfɛːvʁ]) (14 March 1834 – 24 February 1912) was a French figure painter, educator and theorist.
Lefebvre was born in Tournan-en-Brie, Seine-et-Marne, on 14 March 1834. He entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1852 and was a pupil of Léon Cogniet.
He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1861. Between 1855 and 1898, he exhibited 72 portraits in the Paris Salon. In 1891, he became a member of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts.
He was professor at the Académie Julian in Paris. Lefebvre is chiefly important as an excellent and sympathetic teacher who numbered many Americans among his 1500 or more pupils. Among his famous students were Fernand Khnopff, Kenyon Cox, Félix Vallotton, Ernst Friedrich von Liphart, Georges Rochegrosse, the Scottish-born landscape painter William Hart, Walter Lofthouse Dean, and Edmund C. Tarbell, who became an American Impressionist painter.
Many of his paintings are single figures of beautiful women. Among his best portraits were those of M. L. Reynaud and the Prince Imperial (1874).
Lefebvre died in Paris on 24 February 1912.

New document signed between Catholics and Orthodox
>On the significance of appeal to Rome, which Eastern bishops in the early centuries sometimes exercised when local synods ruled against them, and which Western apologists have stressed as proof of papal authority in the early Church, the document is unambiguous: “appeals to the bishop of Rome from the East expressed the communion of the Church, but the bishop of Rome did not exercise canonical authority over the churches of the East.”
>The Chieti document unambiguously rejects this simplification of history. It recognises that even in the West the understanding of Roman primacy was the result of a development of doctrine, particularly from the fourth century, and that this development did not occur in the East: “The primacy of the bishop of Rome among the bishops was gradually interpreted as a prerogative that was his because he was successor of Peter, the first of the apostles. This understanding was not adopted in the East…” The East, in other words, rather than reneging on a common heritage, simply never accepted a development it had not been part of.

I might just be a dumbass, but what set the British apart from other nations in Europe? why were they so successful and why is their language still literally everywhere?
>>1882408
They had the right conditions to industrialize first. As a result they were able to create a global empire. English is everywhere now partly because of that but mostly because everyone does business with the US and thus has to learn our language. Being world hegemon has its perks.
>>1882408
>why is their language still literally everywhere?
Because business.
If you want to make money on an international scale you have to converse in English. I.e. if you are a Chinaman trying to do business with a Turk, you would both learn and converse in English. There are courses you can take when doing TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) degree which am at exactly this, teaching enough English to an individual so they can understand their business meetings and nothing more.
In short, all the rich people spoke English, everyone who wants to make some of that money need to converse with them. Watch it change to Chinese in the next 50 years though.
>>1882408
A lot of it has to do with geography. Britain is an island, which makes it easy to defend if you have a large navy. The English channel saved Britain's ass many, many times. And of course, having a nice large navy has utility beyond purely defensive measures.......
Hello buddhist friends, or people who are simply interested in buddhism.
In threads I have previously made before, people have linked videos by Bhante Vimalaramsi. I have watched many of his videos and I find him to be a pretty intelligent man.
He teaches many ideas which I havent anywhere outside of his videos. The most striking thing is probably his preference for loving-kindness meditation over mindfulness of breathing. I didnt even know that loving-kindness meditation was a thing before watching these videos. I havent practiced it yet because I want to make sure I understand it fully before sitting and doing it.
Also his interpretations of the texts are very insightful, like how the anapanasati sutta takes the reader through all of the jhanas by describing "he trains thus: I will breath in experiencing pleasure" is describing the first jhana, etc.
Im curious if anyone here has followed Bhante's teachings, and if so do you have any information to share? It may seem kind of silly asking this on a cantonese cartoon board, but this place is where I found these videos so...

What is your favorite fortress?
>The largest fort in India covered 700 acres atop a 590-foot-tall hill, complete with towers and walls that have stood since the Maurya Empire built it near the Indian city of Udaipur in the 7th century. Fort Chittorgarh, also dubbed the Fort of Chittor, has a one-mile-long twisty road leading to it with seven gateways guarded by a watch tower and iron-spiked doors. While only 22 of the original 84 bodies of water within the fort still exist, 40 percent of the fort's space was covered by water at one time—enough of a reservoir to hold about one billion gallons of water and, with rainfall, enough to maintain an army of 50,000 for four years without fear of thirst.

Indian forts are pretty great.
Alright /his/, post historical figures who have had their spectacular achievements covered up by the powers behind the throne.
Starting with Kingfish, casuals remember him as a dictator because he had the balls to stand up to big money and it's imperialism.

ITT obscure states of history
Couto Misto was a microstate between Portugal and Spain that existed as an independent polity for nearly a thousand years, going from sometime in the 10th century all the way to 1868.
The Italian Regency of Carnaro (aka "l'Impresa di Fiume") was a small self-proclaimed state on the shores of the Adriatic that lasted from September 1919 to December 1920. It was led by the famous Italian irredentist author, Gabriele D'Annunzio.
Its constitution is very noteworthy for having elements raging from diverse ideologies of the time as well as being the first (modern) state to be founded on the corporatist sociopolitical system.

Have not much net to do Research but there was some "independent" state after ww (I/II, im not sure) in the Mosel/Rheinland

I think Sam Harris had a good idea, but his arguments were blatantly wrong.
I think Richard Dawkins would agree that there's a better way to measure or gauge our morals. Morality is form of communication.. it's as simple as that. We try to measure and gauge our language, and that has resulted in linguistics (which is subjective enough, like a dictionary). the law is like morality's dictionary; it exists to standardize a communication of values, a dialectic if you will. Inevitably, 2 different groups always result in a dialectical difference; black vs white, Ebonics vs Proper, Thug life vs high class, etc. Thus, a standard can NEVER be a standard. Modern society exists on a multicultural standard, that we should treat everyone equally, yet this standard requires additional management and law enforcement. Tribalism is therefore the cause of dysfunction in a standardized legalistic society. Racism is the cause of dysfunction in a multi-racial standard. No matter how "Equal" or how many standards we set up, we can't change the tribalistic nature of society. And no matter how tribalistic people are, we can't get them to conform to a set standard. And when we have a "set standard", the imperative and anxiety of the people is to abide for fear of punishment, but we also enforce the standard for fear of tribal chaos, race riots, etc.

The individual is the first feudal agency; the left hand protects the right hand that feeds; no law required. The feudal agency grows, and so do the classes (the right hand becomes the right man, and the left hand becomes the left man); thus, the hand that protects becomes a man who protects, and his hands become left for defense and right for offense; the hand that feeds, likewise becomes the farmer, and one of his hands becomes the one that sows, while his other hand reaps. The feudal society therefore lives in respect of their roles, and they pursue these roles, because they are the same fellowship and have a sense of social obligation toward eachother. Fellowship is the precursor to social obligation (morality). Modern decay of moral infrastructure is largely due to the lack of fellowship , therefore declining their social obligation, creating a sense of unfairness in the workforce and class victimization.
>Dark Enlightenment
Would someone post a picture of an ugly man in an unfashionable hat for me?
Enlightenment era ideals and the ideals of the French Revolution has brought us greater peace and prosperity than any other era of human history.
I'd also like to add that Confucian Role ethics is a big part of this natural morality. In fact, Confucius thought of this morality before I did.
Ceremony is VERY important. it's not good enough that a family (for example) is related to eachother. What really creates the family is the rituals of kinship, the ceremonies, dinners, events, family outings, etc. When we spend time with family, we gain a higher sense of fellowship.
In a feudal society, ceremony was important, because it made the people closer to eachother. We need ritual and ceremony as a society, regardless of what it does for the individual. The individual is unimportant; what is important is that we have morals and meaning in life; all individuals agree, but individualism itself doesn't satiate a collective hunger.
