Just how effective was the Macedonian phalanx in battle?
Damn that must be a painful way to die. If rather take a bullet and die quickly.
>>1917313
The romans were able to defeat it by making sure to fight on uneven ground whenever they fought groups that used phalanx tactics. The Phalanx was not really a flexible tactic. If you could through a wrench in it somehow, that would create exploitable weaknesses.

Common law thread. Favourite president setting cases in your country?
Euros and Quebec can try and defend their civil law system too.
One I like in Canada which you can actually see cities take notice about:
Rossy v City of Westmount
Rossy was sitting in his car in a parking lot. A tree on city property collapsed because of high wind and crushed his car and killed him.
The family sued to the city claiming the city should have removed the tree because it had clear signs of rot and damage. The Rossy family won.
Now you'll see municipalities in Ontario will remove any diseased trees as soon as the tree is visibly in distress, and city councils also hire arborists to inspect trees on city property in populated areas.
How does civil code resolve something like that?
>>1917100
>How does civil code resolve something like that?
Either a representative gets the idea on his own or some citizen starts a... I forget the word. They gather signatures to make a request, you know what that is? So, that proposal goes through the parlament, assembly, thing, whatever, and the representatives make some new law about it, or change an old related law.
So, it's more top-down in that the judicial system is not creative at all but, then again, it can be bottom-up if citizens are civic-minded and active.

By not giving money to someone killed in a freak accident.

If a time traveler went to the past and assassinated Karl Marx before he wrote anything, how many centuries ahead would that shift today's technology global standard of living?
>>1916441
It would set us 50 years back as the USA would not have been motivated to have a space race with Wiemar Germany.
Why do you not realize that if Marx had not done his work, someone else would have. The great men view of history is so tedious and dated.

Explain Calvinism.
Only thing I know is that they have drab aesthetics and they dislike happiness.
stop poping out this board you arminian scum
nah In all seriosity it's really interesting.
Calvinism presents itself as the most radical, and pure of the reformed faiths and places almost full focus on faith, predestination and the word of god. It basically places maximum focus on scripture, preaching and the word and in so doing was historically one of the most militant, and anti-papal protestant force.
calvinism is associated with drab aesthetics because of the calvinist perspective on churches, which are ultimately just a room of some kind where people congregate. there is no sense of mysticism as in Anglican-Arminianism and none of the shit that Catholics do. But calvinism in many ways promoted worldliness hence the resurgence of secular painting in the Dutch Republic which possessed the official conscience of the reformed church. But on the other hand puritans who are an even more extreme eschatological version of calvinism were less aesthetically minded as they detested distraction from god in all forms including mince pies and acting.Nonetheless Calvinists did enjoy life; as it was primarily a religion of sturdy-burgher types (excluding the usual pyramid of labourers etc.) and as a result aspects of bourgeoise undulence from feasting to great country estates were common both in the protestant calvinist republic & Commonwealth/Protectorate.
Sorry that got unwieldy
dank u wel
>they dislike happiness.
Sort of along this lines, I'm wonder if modern Reformed churches actually teach some of their beliefs accurately. I've known a few Presbyterians, and every time I've talked to them about religion, I get the impression that they don't actually understand how their church views things, particularly salvation and predestination. They've always said things like "grace is available to everyone, you just need to ask" and "we believe there's goodness in everyone if they ask for God's help in reaching it," among other things which basically contradict Calvinism.
It makes me wonder if modern Calvinist churches deliberately avoid telling people about some of their beliefs because they know how ugly they sound and don't want to turn people off.
Why didn't Hitler just marry this qt?

He did actually.

>In his youth his loves seem to have been entirely homosexual. He was known to have openly kept a male harem. This exclusivity was a problem, since it was essential to produce an heir. A resolution was reached by his taking a concubine, Subh, who adopted the physical appearance of a ghulam or young man - having a short haircut and wearing trousers. Al-Hakam supposedly gave her the male name of Ja'far. The approach worked and Al-Hakam fathered a son, Hisham, by Subh.

Really? I'm friends with a number of Russians and they all respect Stalin. They aren't even communists but they think at least slightly positively about him because of how he made the Soviet Union the most powerful country in the world.
