Not too bad assuming you weren't an enemy of the state or a partisan. Sure life was tough in an occupied puppet regime, but conditions on the ground were still shitty considering the blockade and the loss of most of their resources for domestic use. Unlike Italy or Germany, Vichy remained largely unmolested by Allied bombing and thus was able to keep some semblance of normalcy for the average person living under it. Vichy for the most part was out of the line of fire for the allies, and they surrendered much of their North Africa holdings without a fight due to shitty supplies and nonexistent morale. Vichy gave Indochina to the Japanese, and basically gave all administrative duties of Corsica to Italy after the Vichy/French navy was scuttled.

The Vichy Army and what was left of their Airforce/Navy was totally unfit for combat and its amazing that they didn't all just dissert out of pure apathy for the Vichy Regime.

Colonialism has many bad aspects yes but some good such as infrastructure building done by the colonist and better education. I've looked a lot into colonialism but I still have very mixed feelings, being a complex issue.

There is some discrimination based on race but it has been severely over hyped since of how big of a problem it was in the past. Are the legal punishments for crimes really that much different per race? I mean obviously I hear it in the news a lot, but I'm pretty sure the black guy got a longer sentence because it was his 4th offense compared to the white kid's first offense, and they blow it out of proportion. Well it would really depend on which time frame you asking about. During the Republic is more or less no taxes, but rather aristocrats paying out of pocket for roads, buildings and their own militias to gather prestige from among their peers and the people.

I imagine property taxation has a lot of potential for abuse, as the tax collector has a lot of leeway in saying what property is and isn't worth.

For example, if you base property on its last sale price, you could sell your property to a relative for 0 dollars and sell it back to you for 0 dollars.
