They aren't. The cultural climate of various communist-led states ultimately depended on the leadership. At two different times in the same state you could find vivid romanticism in one and stark iconoclasm in another.

You'll also notice that as a Marxist-Leninist society ages the more iconoclast it gets. This is because as time goes on what were once heroic revolutionaries and visionaries are replaced in the upper echelons of the party by dull bureaucrats and yes-men.

The DNA of modern Italians is almost identical to that of the Romans. The most significant genetic change took place in Sicily, where about 8% of the population has North African heritage. For the sake of comparison, that's comparable to the percentage of non-British in Britain nowadays.

I don't get why people get so worked up over Tom Bombadil.
