Why, why, why anon? Why do you do it? Why, why get up? Why fight it? Do you think you are fighting for something? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is freedom or truth, perhaps peace, could it be for love? Spooks, anon. Vagaries of perception. Temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as 4chan itself.

No, they were just returning to their usual tricks of raiding vulnerable settlements near the coast. The wasteland they created became their "territory" because no one wanted it. They were not empire builders who sought pax Scandinavica and eternal glory, the nords were too uncivilized and petty for that.

Federalism is a lot like roads

Reminder that until a couple of hundred years ago when christians talked of 'faith' they meant to be persuaded (by evidence).

>American biblical scholar Archibald Thomas Robertson stated that the Greek word pistis used for faith in the New Testament (over two hundred forty times), and rendered "assurance" in Acts 17:31 (KJV), is "an old verb meaning "to furnish", used regularly by Demosthenes for bringing forward evidence." Tom Price (Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics) affirms that when the New Testament talks about faith positively it only uses words derived from the Greek root [pistis] which means "to be persuaded".

>British Christian apologist John Lennox argues that "faith conceived as belief that lacks warrant is very different from faith conceived as belief that has warrant". We are well aware that faith is only justified if there is evidence to back it up." "Evidence-based faith is the normal concept on which we base our everyday lives."

>Peter S Williams holds that "the classic Christian tradition has always valued rationality, and does not hold that faith involves the complete abandonment of reason will believing in the teeth of evidence." Quoting Moreland, faith is defined as "a trust in and commitment to what we have reason to believe is true."

But when the scientific method and modern scholarship came along and demolished all of the previous evidence faith came to be redefined by christians as being something distinct from reason, something to be accepted even in the face of a complete lack of evidence.

>Fideism is an epistemological theory which maintains that faith is independent of reason, or that reason and faith are hostile to each other and faith is superior at arriving at particular truths.

>That God's existence cannot be certainly known, and that the decision to accept faith is neither founded on, nor needs, rational justification—may be found in the writings of Soren Kierkegaard.

Modern christians are literal cucks.

To say that faith being given priority over reason is a modern development is ridiculous when Martin Luther was calling reason "a whore" all the way back in the 16th century and the Bible itself defines faith as "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1).

Also it's not like le science and logic have eliminated all the evidence for God, for example the fact that creation exists is evidence that there is a Creator.

What differences do you notice in Japanese culture compared to "western" ones and what are your two cents on them?

So I was reading a bunch of old Conan stories and I noticed that the way that sorcerers, wizards, and "magic" users use "magic" was markedly different than our conception of magical abilities

My point: Many today envision magic as like casting fire balls and shit from mental ability but in Conan the Barbarian "magic" was simply just chemical concoctions like bombs or Greek fire. One impressive feat was a "wizard" hiding a scorpion in his robes. Also, sorcery and magic was also the act of magic users bargaining and contacting demons to bless them or curse others. No spells or stuff like that

So my question: what was magic perceived as prior to industrialisation in Europe? Was it really just clever tricks and bargains with pagan spirits and demons? I hear all the time Merlin was a wizard but what kind of magical abilities did he actually possss? And what's the difference between magic and religion?

Read the D&D manual 4th edition
>>
Magic was anything unnatural that couldn't be easily attributed to God. Therefore it was the work of the devil and something to be feared and persecuted. As to the difference with religion, basically it was the church's call. It's a cultural thing, in ancient societies there was no difference between the two
>>
>>1954608
M8, the pop-culture perception of magic only changed to what you're describing with the advent of D&D, ~40 years ago. It had become much more benign since pulp fiction paved the way (just look at things like Bewitched, Sabrina, I Dream of Jeannie, etc. - Magic is no longer blood sacrifices and hexes but still isn't "fantasy" magic) for normalizing it but D&D is the reason that magic has the popular perception is does today.

>inb4 D&D ripped off Vance and other fantasy lit
Yeah, but they're also more responsible than Vance every was for spreading the idea that magical prowess is measured in how many times per day you can cast magic missile.

Has anyone been able to rebut Bertrand Russell's famous argument In Marriage and Morals? Einstein even gave great praise to the work

>Love as a relation between men and women was ruined by the desire to make sure of the legitimacy of children.

>The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot coexist with a serious affection for another. Everybody knows that this is untrue.

>Even in civilised mankind faint traces of a monogamic instinct can sometimes be perceived.

>I should not hold it desirable that either a man or a woman should enter upon the serious business of a marriage intended to lead to children without having had previous sexual experience.

>Science enables us to realise our purposes, and if our purposes are evil, the result is disaster.

>Joy of life... depends upon a certain spontaneity in regard to sex. Where sex is repressed, only work remains, and a gospel of work for work's sake never produced any work worth doing.

>Gluttony is regarded by the Catholic Church as one of the seven deadly sins, and those who practise it are placed by Dante in one of the deeper circles of hell; but it is a somewhat vague sin, since it is hard to say where a legitimate interest in food ceases and guilt begins to be incurred. Is it wicked to eat anything that is not nourishing? If so, with every salted almond we risk damnation.

Russell's father allowed Russell's mother to sleep with Russell's tutor, and Betrand Russell grew up to be a genius and win the Nobel Peace Prize.

>The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot coexist with a serious affection for another. Everybody knows that this is untrue.

This is incorrect. Although Russel had only access to the biological science of his time so i wouldn't blame him.

How did Christianity become associated with the Republican Party in the US?
19 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Before the 1960s, the democratic party was the most popular party in the south. After LBJ signed the civil rights act, the democratic party lost the southern vote, and the Republicans moved in to build a new base. Part of how they did this was by focusing on social issues and tying them to conservative religious values.

A big part of this was a push in the 1970s to organize "Christian" as a political identifier. Prior to this, religion in America was actually pretty fragmented, with different Christian denominations seeing themselves and somewhat distinct and distrusting others (look at the distrust of Kennedy as a Catholic for an example). In the 1970s, the Republican party was able to make these different groups come together on their platform of conservative social issues as being tied under a singular "Christian" identity because of "Christian values. It worked, and continued pandering over the years has led to the association between the two. Basically, they were able to unite a demographic group by talking about social issues in the wake of major policy changes from the other party. It was very smart political maneuvering.

The workforce will fully automate, after this proletariat will become a liability rather than a resource to be exploited. From here one of two things will happen, either the ruling elites will kill off the workers in a great holocaust or the workers will seize power from the elite. The end result will be the same however, communism will be achieved, not through socialist revolution, but through the inevitable conclusion of capitalism.

If we're not reduced to smoldering radioactive rubble within the next 100 years that'll be a start. The disenfranchisement of the regular working person will increase exponentially with the development of autonomous robots. Governments will increasingly degrade the rights of their citizens through surveillance and legislation (If the people remain idle).

Some laws in old centuries were really fucked up. Let's make a thread to talk about them.

I translated for you an extract of an old law submited by Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre in the XVII century. The king was tired of poor people and beggars in Paris. So he decided that poverty is now illegal. Poor people and beggars are arrested and locked up in a "general hospital" and forced to work.

Here's the translation of the 1st article.

>In these causes, after examinating all previous ordinances and regulations about poor people, by great and significant persons, and other intelligent and experiemented persons to these cases, together expediting them more suitably in misery of the times, to work on this plan, and pass it with success to the glory of God, and to the public good: To our certain science, own movement, full power and royal authority, want and order, that abled and disabled poor beggars, males and females, to be locked up in an hospital, to be used on works, manufactures, and other works, depending on their ability, and thus that is widely recognised to regulation, signed by our hand, attached under the seal of presents, that we want to be executed according to its form and content.
