What was life like in the Papal States? How did being ruled by the Pope influence their laws and society?

Until the return of Martin V in 1431, Rome was rather underpopulated, ruled by various noble families and in disrepair. At one point only 25,000 people lived in the city. When Martin V returned, he enacted sweeping infrastructure reforms, cleaned up some of the city and removed many of the ruined buildings which still spread across the Eternal City.

Funnily enough: it wasn't a 100% theocracy.

Sacred matters are handled by the pope, but secular matters in Rome such as everyday governance is handled by the Roman Senate (medieval version, the Signoria) who is headed by the Gonfaloniere. However the pope does have a huge influence in the governance of Rome and the States, making him virtually an elected prince.

Furthermore that is just Rome, it is called the Papal STATES for a reason: many other city states include it. Some are ruled by princes while others are republics. They have a modicum of autonomy but to enjoy the continued direct patronage of the Pope, they must pay the Denarii Sancti Petri (Money owed to St. Peter) a sort of Tax from a given percentage of income of the states.

Some papal states obeyed the pope and are de facto ruled by him, others gave him the finger, particularly Romagna, who used to belong to the Holy Roman Empire. Romagna continued giving the pope the Finger until Rodrigo Borgia assumed office and his warlord of a son destroyed them and made them kiss papal ass for a time anyway.

What does /his/ think about the theory that violent expansion and force conversion from the Frankia was one of the main factors starting the viking age?
Not saying it was the only factor, but it do make sense considering Charlemagne's recent and violent conquest of Saxony, the many refugees into pagan lands it created as well since the first confirmed viking raid taking place after the forced conversions in Saxony in which case it targeted a monastery.
The vikings had no way of directly confronting the Frankish empire's military might, so they targeted its religion wherever they could.

What evidence is there? Like the Norse themselves saying they did it for this reason in particular?

It does seem like a logical explanation, but do expect this discussion to be memed and shitposted to death by Crusader fanboys

May you define not reached them?
They saw their southern kin get forcefully converted and have their way of governing destroyed, the Danes seeing it fit to build one of Northern Europe's biggest fortifications ((DanneVirke)) to ward of the Frankish threat.

>>1974530
I am afraid I don't got any quotes from them right now, but as I get it the Christians wouldn't call them Barbarians but heathens giving this conflict a religious dimension. Aside from that the only thing I can think of right now is that the Viking contact with the Christians had been peaceful up to the Saxon wars, the Viking attack on lindisfarne occurring relatively recently after said wars.

How capable are humans of conspiracy?

Where is the cutoff point for how many people can partake in a conspiracy and not get snitched on? Is it really possible to form a shadow government, honeypot hundreds of pedophiles, tape and blackmail them to act as figurehead politicians?

If there was really an illuminati/NWO type deal, could someone give an example of the practical scale that a conspiracy could reach and be maintained?

Grand conspiracies are literally impossible to maintain for an extended time.

There are mathematical models with very generous parameters that show this:
http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0147905
>>
Good question that shows you're a smart guy.
No, grand conspiracies as imagined by some are almost impossible, because once you involve so many people some are bound to expose you either intentionally or by being careless, and chance of this increases during time.
Clinton and related e-mail scandals, while containing a lot of truth, are probably laced with pure lies for propaganda values. Standard operating procedure of Russian intelligence, the guys who actually acquired them and then used Wikileaks to distribute.
World is a far more chaotic place than people think. That's both scary and kinda relieving at the same time.

Why was the Red Army's uniform during World War Two a mustard yellow colour? I've also seen variations which were more brown. The U.S. uniform of the time makes sense, as does the German one, but a yellow colour looks like it might stand out against greenery or in urban areas.

Was it an appropriate choice, economic reasoning or otherwise?

Firstly it's almost khaki, perhaps what you perceive as mustard are heavily worn and faded ones.

Secondly this was the optimal medium color to be used as a single color camoflage for the eastern european steppe flora and vegetation, during spring, summer, and fall

Thirdly the Red Army quickly began to transition into a darker green color for their field blouses/гимнacтёpкa by 43 to 45 in realization that a darker color would be more appropriate for urban fighting, along with the flora and vegetation of the new territories which it began to invade.

Fuck. I meant curly. You know what I meant. It is East Asians who have straight pubic hair.

I was watching the Netflix series “The Crown”, (much better then the chick flick tv series “Victoria”) about the early reign of Elizabeth II and there’s a scene in E05 where Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, is told by government ministers that while he will be invited to his niece Elizabeth’s coronation, his wife will not.

We then get a long rant (albeit, dignified) from Edward to his wife in the form of the character doing a voice-over of a letter he’s writing her, where he goes off on the British royal family, ragging on his mom, calling the family members jackals, vile tawdry rabble and sad desiccated hyenas

How accurate was this scene? Was it based on actual letters Edward VIII sent to Wallis Simpson and did he really talk that much shit about his family?

Its a serious failure in education that he abdicated to do his own thing over something like a divorced American.

I suppose its a good thing that someone without a serious concept of duty dropped out before ww2.

> Its a serious failure in education that he abdicated to do his own thing over something like a divorced American.

Dunno if you’re a Brit but as an American, we tend to look at that as not a big deal and would blame the royal family and British government for pushing him out.

> I suppose its a good thing that someone without a serious concept of duty dropped out before ww2.

That’s true, though I don’t think it’s an issue of duty but that Edward VIII was clearly pro-Nazi regardless of what he later claimed.

“Albert Speer quoted Hitler directly: "I am certain through him permanent friendly relations could have been achieved. If he had stayed, everything would have been different. His abdication was a severe loss for us."
>>

I'm American and it was most definitely duty related, and you should at least have a little knowledge of that having seen the show.

To cause scandal over love and fail in his duty as monarch was just that.

There was a big fundamentalist Christian movement going on in the early 1900's. It's either that or just the general trend of secularism rapidly gaining ground in the 20th century.
