I'll start off with a few questions:

My first question is, what on Earth is happening in these regions? The whole place seems incredibly unstable. Was it always like this, or were Eastern powers remarkably weak around this time?

Secondly, there was a really interesting argument in chapter 8 that claimed that Russia's interest in this region was chiefly economic, that they needed to open up trade in Western Asia to sell the goods that they couldn't sell in domestically or in Europe. Was this belief justifiable? It doesn't really seem like there's enough wealth in Western Asia to support the Russian industrial economy.

My last question is, since this was not a really analysis-heavy section of the book, and mostly just anecdotes and stories, who was your favorite figure? What was your favorite story?

I definitely loved the section on Pottinger, and the story of Griboyedev getting torn apart in Teheran was pretty awesome as well.
