Syria is hell purely because one side will never win. Russia is propping up Assad, and the rebels (even though they're numerous) cannot defeat the Syrian Army since they have air superiority.

It would be a lot better for the civilians if they just gave up and accepted Assad.

Yep. People complaining about the fighting in Aleppo have to remember that the Rebels could basically stop the fighting if they wanted to.

Does anyone know how minors work for a bachelors of arts degree? I am working towards my criminology b.a and am interested in taking a polisci minor as I have done a bunch of poli sci classes so far in my electives.

I was wondering if my electives from my major can apply to the minor and the major, and also there is a research methods requirement for the minor that I have already completed in my major, will I have to do the course twice (says pick either methods crim, poli, or soci, and I have done the crim research methods)

The website is retarded and not very clear, says that credits can only be used for more than one major or minor, but I am not sure if the two are combined or not)

sorry if this thread doesn't make any sense, or if this is the wrong board, you guys seem like the only board who would know about uni stuff.

Aren't minors usually only 9 - 12 credits (3 or 4 classes)?

I mean yeah get one that you're interested in yes but it's hardly worth mentioning as a qualification isn't it?
>>
>>2075895
the minor I want is 32 credits. I think it varies between schools. 15 credits 1st and 2nd year, 18 credits 3rd and 4th year.

>As the NSDAP consolidated its power, several disputes arose between Hanfstaengl and Germany's Propaganda Minister, Joseph Goebbels. Hanfstaengl was removed from Hitler's staff in 1933. He and Helene divorced in 1936. Hanfstaengl fell completely out of Hitler's favour after he was denounced by Unity Mitford, a close friend of both the Hanfstaengls and Hitler.
>In 1937, Hanfstaengl received orders to parachute into an area held by the nationalist side of the Spanish Civil War, to assist in negotiations. While on board the plane he feared a plot on his life and learned more details from the pilot about the mission, who eventually admitted he had been ordered to drop Hanfstaengl over republican-held territory, which would have meant almost certain death. The pilot eventually landed on a small airfield after claiming an engine malfunction following a brief talk with Hanfstaengl, which allowed him to escape.
>This version of the story was related by Albert Speer in his memoirs, who stated that the "mission" to Spain was an elaborate practical joke, concocted by Hitler and Goebbels, designed to punish Hanfstaengl after he'd displeased the Führer by making "adverse comments about the fighting spirit of the German soldiers in combat" in the Spanish Civil War. Hanfstaengl was issued sealed orders from Hitler which were not to be opened until his plane was in flight. These orders detailed that he was to be dropped in "Red Spanish territory" to work as an agent for Francisco Franco. The plane, according to Speer, was merely circling over Germany containing an increasingly disconcerted Hanfstaengl, with false location reports being given to convey the impression that the plane was drawing ever closer to Spain. After the joke had played itself out, the pilot declared he had to make an emergency landing and landed safely at Leipzig Airport.[6] Hanfstaengl was so alarmed by the event that he defected soon afterward.

Why was Roosevelt so insistent that the USSR should continue fighting against Germany, that he agreed the recompense would be all of Eastern Europe, as established in the Tehran Conference?

Throughout World War II, it was the Japanese Empire that was the Americans' real enemy - Germany was just a sideline, an ally of Japan. A hostile country, but hardly the "real" enemy. So why the U.S. should have offered up all of those countries to the Soviets in exchange for a guarantee that they'd keep pounding the Nazis is odd for me, especially considering that the U.S. had no interest in propping up the British Empire.

Naturally, I can see why Churchill wanted the Soviets to keep up the fight against Germany, and why he promised them all that land if the war was won - the Soviets were one of the few things preventing a more concentrated attack on the British Isles. But, again, why did Roosevelt agree to this?

Have you never heard of the "Germany first" doctrine?

>Throughout World War II, it was the Japanese Empire that was the Americans' real enemy - Germany was just a sideline, an ally of Japan.

This is incorrect. All of Roosevelt's political maneuvering from 1939 onward was to get involved in Europe. The Manhattan project was begun before the U.S. was even in the war out of worries that Germany, not Japan, would get to the nuke first. Lend -Lease was established before the war to help the UK, then fighting Germany, not fighting Japan. The overwhelming majority of U.S. war industry was allocated towards things that would be there to crush Germany, not Japan.

Germany was the first and foremost enemy of the administration.
>>
>>2075285
Let me put this lightly.
>1
Japan never came close to be a threat to the United States. It was never remotely close to winning. It lost to a United States that was focused half way around the world trying to kill the Germans.
>2
If the Germans were to win World War 2 and maintain a hegemony over Europe (pretty impossible at that point) they would be a legitimate threat to the United States in the long run.

How and why is he remembered like this?

IIRC He did this because every other General who tried against Rommel made this exact mistake, Rommel worked very well when on the move and since Monty refused to retreat that meant that one of Rommel's big sources of supplies, The retreating British had dried up. Had Montgomery tried to rout Rommel he may have succeed but he also been forced to retreat like the ones who preceded him. However I can't really speak for the rest of his actions but I'd assume that there were similar reasons for them.

A huge case of winners write history, same with Churchill. Brits are overrated in general and would get their shit smacked easily without the yankees and even if they somehow managed to hold their ground, the slavs would have raped them after the war. All of this despite being a juggernaut of a country with colonies everywhere and a superior navy.

The anglos in WWI and WWII are nothing but an embarassment, considering how hard they got slapped every time.
>>
>>2075184
In my opinion he isn't deserving of his fame. In the build up to El-Alamein, he gave the British troops a renewed sense of direction and purpose. He was an excellent trainer of men and managed to instill confidence in those under his command. Despite that, he had a habit of pissing people off, especially his superiors, and often was too cautious to see through any great victories. He had confidence though, and the British media needed someone like that to promote. These days he isn't as admired as he was in the 70s and 80s, which is probably a good thing. Trying to write a sensible answer in this thread before all the anglo-hate floods in

Was Normandy really the best point for an invasion?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2074777

How are you defining "best point"?

It was a pretty good point for a variety of factors, including easy air access, ability to strike out of it in several directions forcing the Germans to guard all possible breakout zones, and relative lack of defenses.
>>
>>2074777
Well, it definitely worked.
>>
What I don't fully understand is why they chose Normandy. Why not the relatively undefended west coast of France? It was further away but it's not like all the troop carries would run out of few and sink because of a few extra miles. They would likely lose some element of surprise before landing but it's not like the boats would be so slow that any appreciable amount of German reinforcements could be deployed.

Were they more uncertain about the German counterattack that would come days later than they were of the D-Day itself and thus wanted to control as many bridges into and population centers as soon as possible regardless of losses?
