How can the Sacred Band of Thebes exist, if homosexuality doesn't?

It was a military regiment just like any other, except on top of choosing to train a certain way to a certain level you also had to choose to be gay if you wanted to be considered for recruitment.
I haven't studied ancient history very much, but a prof told me that them being described as pairs of lovers doesn't necessarily mean that they were gay, just that they had a really strong bond. But he also said that them doing lots of buttfucking is very much possible.
Why is the Battle of Rzhev so relatively unknown?

>Why is the Battle of Rzhev so relatively unknown?
Because it was a mismanaged total disaster for the Soviets.
Official propaganda kept it hidden.
>This part of the Second World War was poorly covered by Soviet military historiography, and what coverage exists occurred only after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when historians gained access to relevant documents. Exact dates of particular battles, their names, outcomes, significance, and even losses have not been fully clarified and there are still many controversies about these topics.

Also, the poster boy of /his/ memes was partially involved, so you know it was a bloodbath for the Soviets.
>The role of Zhukov in this infamous offensive is also a debated topic. American military history, Colonel David M. Glantz (Hoa Kỳ) claimed that G. K. Zhukov had to take the main responsibility in the tactical failure of this operation, and this is "the greatest defeat of Marshal Zhukov". In more detail, David Glantz asserted that Zhukov's command in this offensive was not careful, too ambitious, too clumsy and all these lead to a disaster.[38] However, Antony Beevor disagreed with Glantz's comment. According to Beevor, at that time Zhukov had to concentrate on Operation Uranus at Stalingrad battlefield hence he had little time to care for what was happening at Rzhev.[39]
>The Russian authors Vladimir Chernov and Galina Yaroslavovna also disagreed with Glantz. They asserted that from 26 August 1942 Zhukov did not command the Western Front, and that from 29 August he had his hand busy with the serious matters at Stalingrad.[40] It has been asserted[by whom?] that Stalin was actually the commander in charge of all the fronts at the Rzhev salient.[41] Zhukov only took part in the commanding at Rzhev during its later periods as a "firefighter" who was solving the serious problems of the battlefield at that moment.[42] Therefore, Beevor asserted the comments of Glantz about Zhukov's responsibility were not correct.[39]

Was there ever a chance it might succeed?
>>2153789
Yes. They were doing extremely well in the beginning. What they needed was a few more quick, decisive blows to knock the Russians out of the war. Lend lease was what really stretched it out and probably won the war for the Soviets along with the loss of over 200,000 Axis troops at Stalingrad.
>>2153789
Not under the given strategic situation with Britain and America bombing their industry and supplying the Russians.
>>2153789
stalin actually twice tried to initiate peace talks. i imagine if hitler had accepted and solidified his gains instead of pushing on ahead to moscow and stalingrad, he would have held quite a lot of territory and turned all his power towards the western allies.

Where were you when you found out that pessimism was right.
No matter who you are things will become shittier for you and your country.
>>2153475
Pessimism is right, just like Optimism is right.
Both have huge problems and both think they're right.
The true answer is realism. Pessimist confuse realism with optimism. Optimists confuse realism with pessimism.
However, that's okay. This is reality, extremists will be extremists. Its better to change rational people's mind than extremists.

But realistically speaking everything is getting worse.
>middle east is becoming one choatic mess
>europe is getting more and more autocratic and refugees are pouring in one way or another
>america is starting to stagnate while ethnic groups are getting more divided

>africa is africa as always
Always expect the worst outcome, that way you'll never be dissapointed
Who was the greatest general in your country's history?
This is Field Marshal John Monash, who led the Australian forces at the end of the first world war and is credited with expediting the end of the war.
I don't want to say Rommel but I can't think of anyone else. Maybe Lettow-Vorbeck.
I'm gonna say Gustav II Adolf.

Much of US history is divided into pre-Civil War and post-Civil War, seen as a turning point for the direction of the nation.
What will be the new divisive event in US history? My money's on 9/11. I think in 100 years textbooks will discuss the pre-9/11 and post-9/11 eras.

Where's a good place to use and study historical sword-fighting? I know HEMA is good but they seem to focus on Medieval longsword and little else. Is there a place where I can study and practice with everything to katanas to scimitars to gladius to sabers?
But why waste your time with that? You'll literally never need that in your life.
>>2152925
Why do people waste their time watching sports? When will knowledge of who the Cowboy's top reciever is ever be of knowledge in life?
Because its interesting and keeps me fit and I'll really enjoy the historical aspect of it.

personally I think socrates (via xenophon, and since socrates was a soldier during the Peloponnesian War it seems like it is probably true) said it best:
Just as much as the competitors entered for Olympia. Or do you count the life and death struggle with their enemies, upon which, it may be, the Athenians will enter, but a small thing? Why, many, thanks to their bad condition, lose their life in the perils of war or save it disgracefully: many, just for this same cause, are taken prisoners, and then either pass the rest of their days, perhaps, in slavery of the hardest kind, or, after meeting with cruel sufferings and paying, sometimes, more than they have, live on, destitute and in misery. Many, again, by their bodily weakness earn infamy, being thought cowards. Or do you despise these, the rewards of bad condition, and think that you can easily endure such things? And yet I suppose that what has to be borne by anyone who takes care to keep his body in good condition is far lighter and far pleasanter than these things. Or is it that you think bad condition healthier and generally more serviceable than good, or do you despise the effects of good condition? And yet the results of physical fitness are the direct opposite of those that follow from unfitness. The fit are healthy and strong; and many, as a consequence, save themselves decorously on the battle-field and escape all the dangers of war; many help friends and do good to their country and for this cause earn gratitude; get great glory and gain very high honors, and for this cause live henceforth a pleasanter and better life, and leave to their children better means of winning a livelihood.
