Was he in the right? Or was he just an evil racist reactionary who was scared of nomads and unable to see how much they could contribute to chinese society?

Here's the full quote so you get the context:

>The long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead. Economists set themselves too easy, too useless a task if in tempestuous seasons they can only tell us that when the storm is past the ocean is flat again.

He was saying it isn't very helpful to disregard current economic problems as mere fluctuations because those are exactly the problems economists need to figure out if they're going to be of any use at all. By analogy you would be a pretty shit doctor if your response to each sick patient was "that's just a temporary fluctuation, you'll be dead within a hundred years and then it won't matter."

Taken out of context, that quote is usually brought up to lead you to believe he only cared about short term gains and was OK with fucking over the future to get them.

don't negotiate, keep fighting against overwhelming numbers then take a trip to Rome with some of my grizzled veterans

make an impassioned plea in the senate to create a standing army with limits on generals to assuage fears of the army being used for political purposes, not only appeal to patriotism but subtly question their masculinity so if they do not contribute it will be seen as a sign of weakness

create 4 classes of legionary, engineers, archers, infantry and cavalry

because there is not much time, they will be initially levied from the countryside like normal troops and given only a few weeks drilling, each with their own local commander, these commanders select a suitable competent general and swear an oath to obey him for the duration of the campaign while the general stakes his reputation on his success, listening to subordinates and maintaining a high degree of professionalism to achieve victory

promise soldiers, officers and contributing landowners any loot they can capture plus a share of the land liberated if the previous occupants have been killed

return to the province and spar with the goths, only engaging in battle if we have the upper hand, because Rome has control of the med, supplying our tropps is easier and so the Goths will either have to attack us in a defensible position or retreat, if they lose the battle we will immediately follow their retreating army into Gothic lands making use of lighter troops for raiding so as not to risk our core of infantry, if they retreat from the province we will have to prepare supply routes inland to challenge them in the same way, possibly down the Danube

that is how I'd do it

Was it common for women to fight alongside men in levy units? I've been playing this game lately and noticed early on that the Germans, Celts, and Hunnic factions have units comprised of both men and women. Naturally I'm inclined to call bullshit on this, however I figured I'd ask you guys for some input.

Does it matter if it's accurate? Total War is more arcadey than anything else in the first place, and I think it adds to the apocalyptic feel of Attila, where groups of people are driven so far to the edge by the Scourge of God that the women-folk must join the men in securing a future for their people.
>>
>>2165492
To a point, no. But I think Total War at least tries to be taken seriously and steep itself in historical accuracy to a point. Really the only reason you see shit as mentioned in OP, as well as ridiculous things like Celtic royal female warrior units in Rome 2 or that women of Sparta dlc pack is generic left shilling.

Seriously the actual time of Atilla was horribly depressing enough, you don't have to resort to muh diverse cast of female and minority warriors to evoke that in a video game.

In his 2004 book The Anatomy of Fascism, Paxton refines his five-stage model and puts forward the following definition for fascism:

Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.

How can i forget about Catholicism?
Since i've been a child, i have lived in fear about God, Jesus and everything about it. Especially about ghosts and demons to the point of not being able to sleep. Even becoming an atheist has not worked for me. Can someone give me an advise for this problem?

>Since i've been a child, i have lived in fear about God, Jesus and everything about it
Then whoever taught you about the faith had no clue what they were doing.

>Especially about ghosts
Those don't exist in Catholic eschatology

>and demons
We have exorcism you know. Besides, Romans 8:31
>What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who is against us?
Demons only want you to think they are incredibly powerful, on par or greater than God, because they know they really have no power.

Why did it take so long for economics to come into existence. I understand that it is alot of human interaction but it seems like something so important would have been brought to the attention of some great thinker at some point before the modern era.

Not really. Many of the ancients already did.

For example: during the Hundred Schools of Thought in Pre-Imperial Chinese history, some of the schools dabbled about economics.

There were even protocommunists in the form of the Agriculturalist school.

What's bad about making moral judgements about historical figures?

I don't mean when you let it warp the facts of history, but people seem to be adverse to the idea of holding up historical figures to a moral standard.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2163625

And what exactly does it accomplish? It certainly doesn't explain their actions, as it would be bizarre in the extreme to assume that they would act according to a moral code that they themselves would not be familiar with and would not have practiced.

All it really lets you do is assert that your own code of morality is superior and thus allowing you a cheap sense of mastery over a long dead person who isn't there to defend himself or herself.
>>
>>2163625

A pointless and futile exercise in judgement which adds nothing to the study of characters or events in history.
>>
>>2163625
Because moral standards are relative. Things that we consider bad today might not have been considered bad in the past, and vice versa. Calling a certain king evil because he waged a war and conquered some land is just stupid and privileged. It was what literally everyone did, and if you didn't engage in it, then you would die, and that some guy 1000 years later thought that it was brave or whatever that you let yourself be killed is no consolation.
