Why did the Soviets always get massively fucked in a lot of battles despite having more troops/tanks/airplanes than the Germans? Were they just retarded and didn't know how to fight or whats the deal?
>>2180762
Germans and Soviets had different criteria for what counted as a "loss"
Germany typically only counted Total Losses, where tanks/vehicles were beyond repair.
Soviets had a much wider criteria for counting a loss, including damages that were eventually repaired or disabled tanks/vehicles.
I don't know that much about the Soviet order of battle, but Stalin's military purges after the clusterfuck in finland along with the serious economical issues they had been going with for years lead to a number of problems and clusterfucks, along with general unpreparedness for the Nazi assault. They lacked good command (or any command in some areas where the nazi lines went past/encircled troops), logistics, and lots of other things during the initial german advance.
As the german advance slowed down from their own logistical problems and the sheer size of the area they were trying to invade, they were able to regroup, rearm, put the chain of command into a more working position, call for reinforcements from siberia, and take advantage of having actual winter equipment to halt the nazi advance.
After the initial plunge to Moscow stopped and aid from the other allies, largely the USA helping with shortages in mechanical parts, clothing, fuel, guns, ammunition etc they managed to put themselves into a better situation to do the long push towards berlin.

Good run.
At the end of WW2, the US had 6.3% of the world's population and 50% of its wealth. This is unprecedented in human history
Was it their responsibility to spread that wealth responsibly to the wretched and impoverished of the world? Wouldn't that have been the Christian thing to do?

"Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be. But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own. She will commend the general cause by the countenance of her voice, and the benignant sympathy of her example. She well knows that by once enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication, in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy, and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom. The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force.... She might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit"

I don't know if this board ever does this kind of thread, but I have a question that fits the category.
So, the ballista, shoots giant bolts I guess, but why? Why did anyone need to shoot giant missiles anywhere? Where they used as a siege weapon? Against castle walls? I just can't seem to understand what it did good, anyone care to explain? If no one else has any stupid questions I guess this will just be a ballista thread.

I'd say good initiative in any case to keep shitpostig down. I believe part of it was a morale impact and then part of it to shoot siege towers etc. down.

Why the fuck didn't the US put steal nets around their ships. We have documents stating the Japanese were concerned about these nets, even the US briefly thought of doing it, yet they refused.
It wasn't a matter of cost, these nets were cheap as fuck.
I swear the more I read about Pearl Harbor, the more I realize how much of a massive US military fuck up it was.
Also anything Pearl Harbor
>>2180311
what are these steel nets and how are they supposed to prevent a battleship from sinking? Never even heard of them. Please enlighten me.
>>2180370
He may be referring to Torpedo Nets.
I don't think they were made out of 'steal'.

OP confirmed for idiot. Why do idiots always start WW2 threads?
Can one of you explain to me the purpose of Germany and Japan being allies during WWII? As far I know neither really helped one another fighting and the only common denominator seems to be America. So why did they become friends? Or if they weren't actually allies and they just so happen to be at war at the same time, why are we told that they were allies?
Both were against communism
iirc it was a defensive treaty only, technically Germany was only obligated to help Japan if it were attacked
>>2180304
Initially started out as an alliance against the Soviet Union, but the Japanese chimped out with Pearl Harbor.

They had rubber in WW1.
Heck the guy who'd managed to produce it artifically was German and awarded the nobel prize too.

She worked in the Greek equivalent of a Japanese maid café.
Over 10 years ago, my father received this Soviet stamp collection from an old Russian man who used to work at the office with him. He has since passed away but he gave it to us as a gift because he found out I collected stamps (I was 10 years old at the time) and had no children or family in the U.S. to pass it on to. Anybody interested in some pictures / taking a look through it with me? Some of them seem to be rare.
Since most of them come as duplicates, I am also trying to judge the value of these stamps to maybe sell those that have doubles.
Bump for interest?
Sure why not

Been reading a book about Robert E Lee's generalship recently called "Victorious American And Vanquished Virginian" by Edward H. Bonekemper. Pretty good book. I now think Lee's the most overrated general in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Anyone else agree?
>"The results of Lee's faulty decisions were catastrophic. His army suffered 209,000 casualties- 55,000 more than Grant and more than any other Civil War general. Although Lee's army inflicted 240,000 casualties on its opponents (ratio 1:1.15), 117,000 of those occurred in 1864 and 1865, when Lee was on the defensive [in largely trench warfare] and Grant engaged in deliberate war of adhesion (achieving attrition and exhaustion) against the army Lee had fatally depleted in 1862 and 1863. Astoundingly (in light of his reputation), Lee's percentage of killed and wounded suffered by his troops were worse than those of his fellow Confederate commanders."
>By comparison, "For the entire war, Grant's soldiers incurred about 154,000 casualties (killed, wounded, missing, captured) while imposing about 191,000 casualties on their foes" (ratio of 1:1.26)
>"During the first 14 months that Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia (up to the retreat at Gettysburg), he took the strategic and tactical offensive so often with his undermanned army that he suffered casualties of 98,000 men while inflicting 120,000 casualties on his Union opponents. The manpower-short Confederacy could not afford to trade numbers like this with the enemy. During the critical and decisive phase of the war from June 1862 to July 1863, Lee was losing an average 19 percent of his men while his manpower-rich enemies were suffering casualties at a tolerable 12 percent."

>I now think Lee's the most overrated general in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Anyone else agree?
Hell no. While there is definitely a myth about Sherman, he's nowhere near as overrated as guys like Rommel.
And seriously? MUH KDR? In what is supposedly a scholarly work? That more makes me think the book is shit than anything else.
>>2180106
Lee. I have no idea what is with my typing today, it's not even the first malapropism in text I've done
>>2180089
>"Had Lee not squandered the Confederacy's limited resources on offensives during the three preceding years, the Confederacy's 1864 opportunity for victory might have been realized. It was Lee's strategies and tactics that dissipated irreplaceable manpower- even in his victories. His army lost at Malvern Hill, Antietam, and Gettysburg. His army took unnecessarily large losses in those defeats, as well as throughout the entire Seven Days Battles."
>"Throughout the Seven Days Battles, Lee's strategy and tactics were extremely aggressive. His strategy was totally offensive. Incredibly, Lee watched thousands of his best troops be slaughtered while charging usually fortified Union positions but did not seem to realize the foolhardiness of such tactics when he was at such a numerical disadvantage. Lee's Seven Days battle plans were overly complex; he frequently issued vague and discretionary orders to his generals, and then he failed to to supervise their execution through adequate on-the-field command and control."
