Were the coolies really so triggered over animal fat? I can understand Mohammedans being vicious pearl clinchers but Hindus as well?

Wasn't it specifically cow fat?
>>
>>2190088
there was also a fear about pig fat.
>>
>>2190100
It used Cow and Pig fat according to the rumor. Anyway that thing was just the spark. The mutiny was going to happen eventually, there was just too many conflicting interests between the British and those of the Subcontinent. The British got lucky that many Indians(Even the Sikhs who they had only recently conquered) were loyal.

Oliver Cromwell did nothing wrong.

Why isn't Britain more grateful than it is for the Marshall plan? Why do they think it was some sort of plot against them?

pic related, the cutting wheel fragment is the economic earthquake that would have destroyed England, the eyeball, if it were not for the protective glasses, the Marshall plan.

I was reading a few old folkloric tales, mostly Eastern European, and a bunch of them have people visiting taverns, and one thing struck me. At least in none of these stories, would you order food the way you did at a restaurant. You go in, the host puts down something in front of you, you eat it, you pay, end of story. What you got was whatever the guy felt like making that evening.

I was just wondering if anyone had something more official or well researched than a bunch of old stories about the ordering habits and whatnot of eating out back in the day. Can anyone recommend anything?

I mean I don't have anything official but in rural NC, where I grew up there were some BBQ places like this. There weren't too many choices, just what the owner felt like cooking that day and the place closed down when he ran out of pork for the day/felt like it. Those places have the best BBQ I tell you what

There's out a rancho that sells bbq out where I live; you go pay for how many buckets you want and the dude would bring you hot metal buckets of bbq'd pork, sausage, baked beans and corn bread. Best food I've had in my life.

Do animals experience, or have Morality?

Does that mean animals are also subject to spiritual growth, karmic punishment and reward, and Divine judgement?

There is something like a proto-concept of fairness in some social critters like macaques.

"You hand me the tool I need to acquire this food and I'll share this food with you after."

"I paid a token the same as the other monkey, how come the man in the lab coat is giving me a lower quality treat? This makes me upset!"

What is up with the Mongols? How did they go from massive hordes to one of the tiniest populations on Earth with no metallurgy and no records of of Genghis Khan? In 1960 there were barely 1 million people in Mongolia.

What the hell happened to make them forget their heritage and have such a massive drop in population? How the hell does someone have a funeral where the laborer that bury Genghis are executed and then the executioners execute themselves? What's going on?

The more I read about the mongol empire the more I am baffled. It is such a weird occurrence.

What happens when you have no identifiable culture and your only claim to fame was conquering empires, not governing them.
>>
>>2188955
It was an extremely confusing time for the world. Archeologists still have trouble attributing artifacts to Mongols. Their culture's understanding is based off the research of historians from the 1800s-1900s. Some Ukrainians would write about mongols and then conflate them with Russian Tartars. It's weird.
>>
The Mongol hordes topped out in the hundreds of thousands of soldiers.

It just used to be that all-cavalry armies with excellent logistics and a good intelligence staff could use High Middle Age states as chew toys.

Also, steppe empires tend to fall apart very quickly due to administrative problems stemming from the rulers being illiterate barbarians with no experience living in cities, let alone running countries.

What could be the explanation of extinction of such a perfect civilization?

>perfect civilization
>perfect

With that aside, the IVC was pretty damn interesting for a civilization. With working plumbing and large cities for it's time, and having an estimated 5-10 million people around the 2000 BCE era.
The most likely theory it completely fell apart and was replaced by the newer Indo-Aryan cultures was probably climate change. According to the theory, the Indus region was significantly greener and tamer at the time the IVC thrived. Due to such things as change in monsoon regions and droughts and the likely violence and migration as a result, the IVC would slowly die out.
>>
>>2190055
Actually, I meant an estimated population of 2-10 million in range. Sorry.
>>
>>2188464
Archaeologists have found evidence indicating that the IVC didn't actually conduct warfare on a large scale. So, incidentally, one of the leading theories on their disappearance is invasion.

Why is "Smith" such a common surname in various languages? Were there really so many blacksmiths? What happened to them?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Must have been a popping industry back in the day
>>
>>2188395
it's just that farmer is a much shittier surname
>>
It was originally common for that reason, but then became even more common because people adopted it thanks to the fact it was common. Apparently names like Schmidt / Schmitz in German just became "Smith" for anglicized Germans, ex slaves got the name a lot, natives took it on for dealing with colonists, etc.

t. wikipedia with [citation needed] so a grain of salt is required, if anyone has a better answer I'm intrigued too.

Reading about miner's strikes, I keep coming across "safety cover". What was this "safety cover"? Was it something about protecting the mine from the elements?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'm gonna guess it has something to do with hazard pay or maybe even a form of life insurance (safety "cover")
>>
>>2187778
I doubt that's it, here's the quote from a book I'm reading
>From the first day, all 289 pits were closed and the strikers
at many of them, against the instructions of the NUM, refused to provide safety
cover.
If it's the workers refusing to do it, even against union orders, it can't be that.
Some blog post:
>The dispute over safety cover was tense. Media reports were clearly biased and I had great difficulty getting any adult to explain it to me as they did not want to “indoctrinate” me. I could tell the adults in my family were very frustrated about it though. Eventually the NACODS leadership reached an agreement with the NCB to provide safety cover. This was the height of naivety on their part.
>There was a stand-off about safety cover in the pits which I was at my wits end trying to follow because the media were biased, but adults in my community wouldn’t explain it to me
>>
>>2187789
Safety cover is like life insurance for the miners

>Deported 2 million Kulaks to Siberia and forcefully relocated over 6 million Crimean Tatars, Volga Germans, Estonians, Poles and other ethnic minorities to Siberia, resulting in over 2 million deaths.
>Forcefully confiscated foodstuffs from the Ukraine during the famine after they didn't reach their wheat output quotas, restricted emigration from famine stricken areas
>NKVD arrested and executed somewhere between 600,000 to 3 million people during the Great Purge of 1936-1939

MFW Stalinboos and apologists for judeobolshevist crimes say that the millions of deaths under Stalin were all "unintentional" and due to "poor management" and can't be directly attributed to him, or weren't "ethnically motivated".
