Why are the Vikings the main subject of history when you talk about Scandinavia, why is there no romanticized """history""" show about the Caroleans? What did they do wrong?
The wha-?
Did they invade Britain? No? So who cares?
>>2241494
Scandinavia in Medieval times is shithole. All historical sources talks only about Danes - Northmans - they are real Scourge of Europe and later they create Normandy - Sicilian Kingdoms, Great Britain etc. All other Skandi are just Fingol woodcutters. But later in times Calmar Union mass German colonization of Sweden (what is German name for this country) happened, and because of this Sweden begin dominate in Baltic region, Swedish Empire etc. Such greatness demand invention of epic ancestors and Swedes invent Gothicism.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothicism
Is same shit as Sarmatism, but for Swedes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarmatism
But later Gothic origin of Swedes become too laughable and they invent vikings in XIX century (historic sources know Normans, Danes but almost don't known vikings - only few timesmentioned about pathetic pirates). Swedes spread this shit vikings around the word by same vay as they spread Ikea now.
Why they don't fap to Swedish Empire instead? Because their Empire suck Russian dicks too often and Swedes not forget this yet.
If the second world war didn't happen how would the first world war be remembered today?

Why have the napoleonic wars been largely forgotten by pop culture?
I mean, Napoleon is definitely a well known figure, but only by name, I doubt most people know why he is famous.
I mean, they are basically World War 0. So at first I tough maybe they were stuck in the same hole WW1 was, overshadowed by WW2, but lately the interest in WW1 seems to have spiked, while I still don't see much mention of the napoleonic wars anywhere.
>>2241358
There's hasn't been a major, iconic film or even television series on it. Or even a video game. Think about it, films like Saving Private Ryan and games like Call of Duty popularised WW2 to your average Joe. Outside academia, your average person has had little exposure to Napoleon on his life and therefore don't care. It's not like they're going read War and Peace or any historical biography.
There needs to be a Oscar winning blockbuster on the man.
>>2241358
The only reason why WWI is being referenced in pop culture again is because of the ongoing WWI Centennial.
Once November 11, 2018 rolls around, it'll be forgotten again.
>>2241386
You might be right. I did started hearing way more about WW1 after Battlefield 1 was first announced. Tho it was already getting some more mentions earlier.
>>2241387
idk man, you might be right that it's due to the centennial. But I imagine that all the kewl missconceptions people have built in their heads of WW1 might make it stick for longer, like that idea that it was literal cavemen fighting with modern guns or something that a lot of people seem to believe.

Is there any ancient European culture more over-romanticized and over-sentimentalized than the insular Celts?
You see this a lot in many circles. Irish and Scottish Nationalists (which would make sense), Plastic Paddies in America (especially in regions with a high Celtic population such as Central Appalachia or parts of New England), and those neopagan New Age types.
But aside from inventing pants and being really good at metallurgy, is there anything worth romanticizing about the Ancient Celts? I'm mainly referring to the insular Celts of Britain and Ireland.
They were headhunters and primitive tribals.
>but muh Irish saved civilization
That was post-Romanization and Christianization. I'm talking The Wicker Man type of Celts, not The Quiet Man type of Celts. And do note that I am of primarily Celtic descent, mostly a mix of both Irish and Scots-Irish (Ulster Scots to you Britfags), so it's not a /pol/ thing. So, discuss this amongst yourselves.

No

Don't forget the fact that they were the last European peoples to practice human sacrifice and they practiced it to a far greater extent than the Greeks, Romans, or Germanic peoples.

Who the fuck romanticises ancient Celts? Nobody does this apart from teenage neopagans.

Would the Scientific/Industrial revolutions and the European conquest of much of the world have still taken place had Christianity not become dominant in Europe in the late Roman period? If so, would they have taken place sooner or later than in the actual timeline?

well for a great deal of Europe's history, the only people transcribing, preserving and writing books were Christian theologians, so at the very least it probably didn't hurt

Does nationalism ever typically turn out well for a country? Seems like despite all of its benefits it always degrades rapidly. Is it that it turns into jingoism instead of patriotism, or are isolationist economic policies gone too far what leads them to not last/go left?
Nationalism is a deification of the State
No
>>2240106
Japan says yes
>>2240106
Nationalism creates a need for justification of the actions of the people and the state since it (typically) based on a mythic ideal. This creates autism and problems. But the better term for it would be ''Ultra Nationalism''.
>Nationalism is a complex, multidimensional concept involving a shared communal identification with one's nation. It is expressed as a political ideology oriented towards achieving and maintaining communal autonomy, and sometimes sovereignty, over a territory of historical significance to the group.
Before ''national awareness'', there is a commonly acknowledged sharing of language culture and other traits within a group. Nationalism in it's basest form would be to segregate and attempt to preserve said group within a nation-state.
