Was the old Swiss Confederacy the first thing that can be considered a national state in Europe? If not, why?
>politcal entity since late 13th century
>not a monarchy bot some proto democratic /parliamentary system
>de facto independent since 1499
>de jure independent from 1648 until 1798
>ethnically united, as the Cantons back then where all German speaking
bamp
>>2258499
Not really, since just like it says on the tin it was a confederation of independent cantonments based on geography and economic interests.
>>2258499
>as the Cantons back then were all German speaking
>picture shows Geneve, Vaud, Fribourg, (arguably) Bern
Also to consider each canton had its own rulings, and quite often you'd see the cantons war each other throughout history
Switzerland was united by alliance not a national identity
It's 1936. I'm commissioned officer Max Mustermann of the Wehrmacht. I'm a good Protestant, a Nazi party member, and pretty cool with the current state of affairs. But here's the thing... my wife is half Jewish.
Can I do anything to keep her out of harm's way? Is there somebody I can write to to have her spared? If I hide her Jewish identity, what would happen to me if I got caught?
>>2258421
>Is there somebody I can write to to have her spared?
YEAH, the swedish government and try to sneak her there for asylum along with yourself.
Just bribe obersturmfuhrer sclomo rifkovitz to forge her Aryan certificate
>>2258421
You can get a new wife...? Jewish girls get boring after around 40-45. Get yourself good Polish Girl, one that will obey you like she was your slave for the rest of her life.
>Lose 2 major wars
>One of the richest countries in the world couple of years later
How did this happen?
>>2258415
Because fuck you that's why.
Good work ethic, no complete killoff of the old elite and american monetary help as kickstarter.
>steal money in war
>deposit all the money in switzerland banks
>lose the war
>recover money
>???
>profit
General discussion thread
Also Im writing a paper and I want your opinions on my thoughts so far.
Would it be fair to say that the allegory itself is doing exactly what Plato is talking about by
A) exposing the reader to a new way of thinking while simultaneously attempting to tear down the way we "normally" percieve the world (as it relates to forms, think the shadows vs. the objects casting them)
B) Being a violent, groundbreaking new way of explaining and thinking about the world, which is similar to the violent imagery of the prisoner being dragged to the surface, blinded by the sun ect.
In other words does the allegory of the cave itself do to the reader what is done to the escaped prisoner in it, forcing him to see the truth?
>>2258395
>prisoner being dragged to the surface
Doesn't he escape?
This graphic should help you see what's going on. Just stick to this schema and don't deviate from it.
>>2258399
Well its worded a bit ambiguously, he is "suddenly compelled" to get up and go outside, although it's described as a painful experience. In other words his escape is painful and discomforting even if it is something he does willingly.
You are now aware that Cuba would be a First World country if the Communist had not taken over.
You are now aware pre-revolution 1958 Cuba was already a relatively wealthy nation with near full literacy and had good healthcare standards for its time.
You are now aware all the so-called "achievements" of the Cuban revolution parroted by left-wing idiots were already present by 1958.

I respect Argentina a little more now.

Im writing a persuasive argument on wether the bombings were right or wrong. Im not sure what side to argue on though, hit me /his/
>>2257822
Japs deserved it tbqh
well this is obviously a high school assignment so just make a simple argument that America's strength as a world leader comes from the moral example we set & hold ourselves to and that the utilitarianism of deciding to commit 'war crimes' based on the number of dead calculated in a hypothetical invasion by saying the same philosophical calculus could be used to excuse even greater 'crimes against humanity' which runs contrary to American interests of being a world leader interested in protecting the rights of all people
you'll get an A if you're not retarded because almost everyone else will just be saying "yes it saved lives" or "no killing people is wrong"
Does this guy deserve all the shit he gets? Since the Orange Regent has started saying "America First", I see the talking heads bringing up Charles Lindbergh's name like it's an ad hominem. The man is a Medal of Honor recipient for crying out loud! What say you /his/?

Once a traitor always a traitor.
Sic semper tyrannis.
He made a mistake.
People don't want to repeat the mistake.
You don't have to be perfect to be good, and you don't have to be free from criticism to be respected.
You have autism.
Who do you think stole his kid?
Was he as much of a military incompetent as Hitler or no
I mean yes of course Italy failed pretty badly during WW2 but was that down to him, his generals or both?
Any book recommendations?
I mean, he was commanding the Italian military so there is not much to work with there.

They did manage to take over Ethiopia and Albania anon!

There's your problem. All successful leaders had hair or at least wore a wig.

>Local monk takes Bible seriously; ruins everything
>pagan dude tries to kill a prophet
>ends up 'converting' and steals the caliphate after his death
Let's play a little game /his/.
Think of a civilization or group of civilizations that share(d) a similar culture. Got one? Good.
What would they have accomplished if the creatures and/or figures in their mythos and folklore were real?
Try to ignore gods or brutally overpowered creatures for the sake of balance.
Few examples:
>Fearsome critters in NA boost tourism drastically and garner scientific funding from around the world
>Wizards (both African and European) duked it out at the Battle of Tours, causing less causalities on both sides with the magic wielders acting as the main firepower on both sides
>Crete is able to breed and domesticate minotaurs to use as a labor force
>>2257432
The Gauls actually used magic incantations against the Romans. They still lost
>>2257437
But wouldn't the Gaul's "magic" protection have been better than their actual armor (which was practically none), at the very least stalling the campaigns for longer?
>>2257441
Certain historical records argue this, yes.
>Everything after Aquinas was a mistake
>people tell me Aquinas was one of Christianity's great philosophers
>meme proof for God that doesn't hold up
>supported torture for apostates
>>2257422
Within an Aristotelian framework it does, at least.
The problem with people like Feser is that they outline a few theological concepts with Aristotelianism and then want you to leap all the way to Christian dogma, leaving a massive chasm filled with miracles and other bullshitteries.
And then there's the problem with post-subjectively cognized religion that comes into view with Jordan Peterson.

Stop blocking paths.

What? Upset your post in the other thread didn't get any replies? >>2256072
Well, congrats, you got this one.
How would you classify George Carlin's overall philosophy, /his/?
Nihilism

post-nihilism.
And post things you feel express it
I'll get us going

Why didn't reconquista continue to Morroco and Algeria?
>>2257096
They actually started doing that and made some notable acquisitions like Gibraltar, Ceuta, Mers El Kébir and Oran (and the Canaries if you count those.)
The Kingdom of Tlemcen most notably got its shit pushed around by the Iberian powers.
The real problem is that they ran into some serious resistance there and soon got distracted by the New World and other colonial pursuits, then the Ottomans moved in.
>>2257096
Because it wouldn't be a reconquista anymore but a conquista.
>>2257216
It was always a conquista. That wouldn't have even slowed them down.
