I'm looking for some interesting historical controversies, things with fairly solid evidence supporting either side. Just need some brainstorming for a paper in an English class. My initial thoughts were to do something fairly simple such as Napoleon's contributions to Europe (whether they were beneficial, harmful, or a mix of both), or Gaius Marius' influence on the Roman military and whether he brought about a much stronger and better organized military, or sowed the seeds for the downfall of the Republic.
I'll be posting some decent papes in return
All ideas are welcome, thanks!

No american politician has ever been in a war
Who would /his/ say was the most terrifying soldier in the history of war?
For me, it would be the Imperialist Japanese soldier during the Second World War. Men with a cause, oft willing to die for that cause. That factor, combined with knowledge of the terrain, use of modern weaponry and training in ambush strategies, makes them terrifying in my opinion.
>>2260780
It's the Japanese, but only because he is a blindly fanatical brute who sees their fellow men as chattels. The mongoloid is without honour and empathy, and only has enough room in his mind for Imperial propaganda.

Agree with the first half of that. The second half, you can take back to /pol/.

in this verse, when jesus says "you've said so" does he confirm himself being the king of the jews, or does he say the equivalent of "i don't know, you made that claim about me" ?
>Matthew 27:16-21
when the Pilate confronted by Jesus Barabbas, and Jesus the anointed
(note, "Barabbas" meaning the Son of the father, and the existence of many people who's last name were the "anointed")
Which one is the real jesus we're interested in? Barabbas or the anointed?
If the real Jesus ('our' jesus) was Barabbas, then does that mean he was released and not crucified?
Im not the holder of a masters in divinity, so my taste of christianity gives fuck all to my opinions, but i would be willing to open this discussion.
>Luke passage
Christ here is not so much denying or overtly claiming his divinity, merley giving people who are listening the option to make their own conclusion. This is a more avante gardé way of approaching the messiah topic, as if he had declared himself the messiah as later Macabees would claim, he would have been killed inatantly for heresy, or been forced to start zapping people. He is inherintley supposed to be different from the more "old testemant" God who would strike mortals for their mortal flaws (job, saul, the israelite who caught the ark from the wagon) so we assume this is his peacefull way of bringing his true nature to the front without abusing the existing rabitical teachers.
>mathew passage
Can you post your version you are quoting? I have checked KJV and NIV and they quote as the following:
Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
Matthew 27:17 KJV
And i would be very interested to know if barabas is also known as a jesus.
>>2260924
How is claiming to be the messiah heresy
>>2260942
Well it isnt, if you actually are one. Essentially the act of claiming to be a god is abhorent to religion, unless you actually are a god.
In the abrahamic faiths, it is lined up in genesis, and taught through out the text, that humanity isnt allowed to be divine, and to claim or strive to become divine is against God's laws.
This might be a silly question but I can't help but wonder: how do modern day Jews actually feel about the holocaust? Obviously we can all agree that it was a horrible event perpetrated by a completely different generation - but are there any Israeli /his/torian lurkers that can share some of the general cultural sentiment Jews have? Do they still hold a grudge? It's just interesting because contrasted with African-American culture in the states, there is still resentment against the "white man" that seems to be generational.
And please don't let this thread devolve into some /pol/-tier shit, I am genuinely curious.
>>2260675
Only experience I have with Jews was, back when I was in high school, when one came to talk about Holocaust.
Only thing he mentioned about Holocaust was that he had forgiven the Germans. The rest was about how awesome is Jesus, his adventures as Christian missionary and singing Christian songs. Our class was like 90% atheists but we played along.
As for your question I think /int/ would be better place to ask, as there is higher concentration of Israelis and you can check the flag.
They love it. It didnt directly affect any if them negatively but they can use it for forced pity if they ever want to.
Similar to blacks and slavery in america. The only difference is that Jews are a whole lot smarter about milking it / perserving it.
>>2260675
I can speak about American Jews
Most Jewish Americans over a certain age either have relatives who died in the Holocaust or know many people who do. Even if you were 8 years old when the killings happened, it's terrifying to think about. Germany was also almost as Jew-friendly as America or Britain from 1880-1932 so many older Jews seriously fear that at any time American society could turn on them. This is the reason why the "We will always be outsiders" mentality still persists among a minority of Jewish folks here.
Younger Jews don't think about the holocaust too much. Literally every week some older Jewish writer makes some tearful and angry op-ed about how Jews under 50 need to spend every waking moment crying over the camps.
Atheists will defend this
I won't. Check mate Mehmet.
I don't see the problem.

Kek at Swedes.
They didn't even have a single king until Olaf Skotkonung in the late 10th century. Sweden was a weak trading entity relying off of Gotland and Oland facilitating trade in the east with the Rus. Sweden did not explore nearly as much as the Danes or Norwegian Vikings, and they simply were not important until the high middle ages with the introduction of Christianity into their kingdom.

He doesn't. The Dalai Lama is supposed to be the incarnation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, not Guatama Buddha.

Tell me about Berlin before the wall. Were people really free to move in and out the West zone? How come they didn't all move there and escape the communist East?
They would be executed
>>2260498
>Were people really free to move in and out the West zone?
Before 1961, there were thousands of who lived in one half of the city and worked in the other. It was possible to go to the other side, however, it was forbidden to leave East Germany permanently. But since there was no border between East and West Berlin it was still relatively easy to just go there as long as you didn't make it too obvious that you're an emigrant (suitcases etc.).
>How come they didn't all move there and escape the communist East
Because most people didn't want to leave their homes I guess
I like how the west side was all decorated with cool graffiti and the east side was kept blank. It's a nice visual metaphor.
what happened to the eastern roman people? how come they were replaced by greeks?

What is the best literature that embodies the Irish spirit? Oscar Wilde seemed to prefer fantasizing over Victorian nonsense, and Joyce is slightly more what I like, yet still too experimental. I'm looking for things that capture the spirit of the Irish people. Stuff that would fit sitting in a pub and listening to traditional music...
Any recommendations on traditional Irish literature?
James Joyce, I guess.

A spook is a spook
The concept of a spook is a spook considering that it fails to account for the fact that most people are dumb and are therefore incapable of acting in their best interests.
