The first version of this thread was cool. Let's try it again.

You have 1 minute to conceive a profound statement and post it. Two sentences or less.

It doesn't matter how poorly founded it is, just post it and let us contemplate it.

My gf is a lawyer and I'm based out in the sticks in a military base. She said it must be rubbish out there because there's nothing there, "like almost no lawyers" apart from one or two crap little ones doing boring stuff.

I told her law isn't everything. She said that it pretty much is.

So I came up with (off the top of my head right now)

>You're in an echo chamber. All you see is law, but while law may be everywhere so is politics, so is finance, so is health, so are headhunters and recruiters and engineers. They're all everywhere and they all depend on or use each other when needed.

>You're misguided in thinking that your everything is everyone's everything - you live in an enclosed world

Her arrogance pissed me off a little bit

What are some cultural differences that have always stood out for you as particularly emblematic of diversity of thought/philosophy between different races/nations?

For me I've always been intrigued by the East Asian idea of "face/mianzi". Although comparable concepts exist in the West, they were never as formalized or commonly used in vernacular speech. The roughly equivalent -concept- would probably be "dignity/dignitas", but face and dignity are still very different.

For example, face in East Asian cultures is almost like leveling up in an RPG. You accumulate face points by accumulating status symbols of wealth and displaying them off to other people. Whereas the concept of dignity in western thought isn't as directly related to wealth, and it is generally considered bad form to be ostentatious with wealth unless it's about largesse/munificence.

This reflects in general culture too. I've noticed that Chinese men tend to disparage women who go for men for reasons other than wealth, which is really weird and alien by western standards.

Corruption and society in Northern and Southern Europe.

In Northern Europe, corruption is thought not to exist or barely exist. People are very trustworthy of their goverment officials and are shocked if they discover a case of corruption. But that does not mean that there is no corruption at all.

In southern Europe however, people are aware of their goverments corruption. And because they are aware that politicians launder tax money, the tax payers refuse to report their income honestly as well. Thus creating a self-feeding problem.

Outside of the "strongman" image, next to nothing.

Why didn't the Umayyad Caliphate/other Islamic Empires colonize the Americans before Europeans? The Almoravid dynasty controlled the coast of Morocco and its ports down to what is now Western Sahara from the 1000's onward.

To make things even easier, Morocco sits along the westward-circulating Canary/North Equatorial ocean current, which means that you basically just had to set a ship adrift a few hundred km offshore, and it would naturally be swept toward the Caribbean.

What ships were they using to sail around all over the Indian ocean and down the east coast of Africa to Zanzibar/Tanzania?
>>

Europeans sailed out of Europe to the America's because they were literally looking for a way to access the far east without going/trading through the Islamic world.

There would have been no incentive for the Islamics to do so. Humans don't like going on incredibly dangerous journeys where half your crew dies and the rest all lose their teeth unless there is a huge reward. Long sea Journeys until about 1660 were just ridiculously dangerous.

Why didn't France just move all their industry south of the Seine and call up more men? It's not like they were a poor country, they were the second largest European power after Britain, they could have put up way more of a fight. They have a large population and lots of wealth, and they could have probably just stringed more from Roosevelt.

KISSINGER, THE POLITICS OF FAGGOTRY

By Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr.

According to a variety of very authoritative sources, Henry A. Kissinger is not a Jew, but a faggot.

I will not tolerate any denial of civil rights to a person who happens to be homosexual. Ordinarily, a homosexual is like an ordinary person suffering the affliction of nasty boils; one recognizes the distinction between the person and the affliction.

The problem with Kissinger is not simply that he has a homosexual personality. The problem with Kissinger is like that of that flaming, fascistic faggot Roy M. Cohn, who is justly hated by most of the ordinary homosexuals of the United States, and a number of those from other nations. Similarly, Henry A. Kissinger is no ordinary, common, garden-variety of homosexual. His heathen sexual inclinations are merely an integral part of a larger evil.

One does not need to catch Henry in flagrante in the Carlyle Hotel, or with a Roumanian waiter in Acapulco. Whatever he does in particular hotel-rooms, or after meetings with Roy M. Cohn at certain New York City restaurants, or by arrangement of certain California acquaintances, need not be reported here. Kissinger may wash (one hopes) and dress, before leaving a hotel-room. He does not, and cannot change his personality.

To a trained eye, the evening television news-broadcasts over the past ten years have provided all the evidence needed to recognize what Kissinger is. I recognize him in the same way, and with the same accuracy I can tell by looking, the difference between a cat and a dog. Psychologically, Henry is a distinct species. He is of the species some psychopathologists prefer to describe as an extreme anal variety of sadomasochistic personality, of the same pathological type as organized crime's Roy M. Cohn.

So... the 80-year-old British historian Henry Kamen (probably most famous for his 1998 book "The Spanish Inquisition: A Historical Revision") has been indicted by a federal grand jury in the US on kiddie porn charges. Not exactly what I expected next for his career, to be honest.

http://www.koat.com/article/noted-spanish-history-expert-henry-kamen-faces-child-porn-charge/8944333

>Noted Spanish history expert Henry Kamen faces child porn charge

>ATHENS, Georgia. — A British citizen who is a noted expert on Spanish history faces a child pornography charge in the United States.

>According to an indictment returned Tuesday in Georgia, Henry Kamen faces a possession of child pornography charge. Federal prosecutors say that in September 2014 Kamen had child pornography, defined in the indictment as any image of a child under 12 engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

>Prosecutors said in a news release that Kamen, a historian and professor of Spanish history, lived in Georgia but currently lives in Barcelona. Online court records do not show any lawyer listed for him.

>If convicted of the child pornography charge, Kamen faces up to 20 years in prison.

What kind of extradition treaty does the US have with Spain? We'd need to look up the indictment itself to find out exactly which charges are being alleged. That can make a big difference in terms of how a foreign country proceeds with a case. They'll move more quickly on big ones like murder and so forth than more complex/questionable cases like "fraud."

Hey /his/torians, I have a question to ask about the Chinese traditional calendar. I know that the Daoist concept of the universe can be surmised by the following excerpt:

>The Limitless (無極; wuji) produces the delimited (有極; youji), and this demarcation is equivalent to the Absolute (太極; taiji).
The Taiji (the two opposing forces in embryonic form) produces two forms, named yin-yang (陰陽) which are called Liangyi (the manifested opposing forces).
These two forms produce four phenomena: named lesser yin (少陰, shaoyin), greater yin (太陰; taiyin, which also refers to the Moon), lesser yang (少陽, shaoyang), and greater yang (太陽; taiyang, which also refers to the Sun).
The four phenomena (四象; Sìxiàng) act on the eight trigrams (八卦; Bagua).
Eight 'eights' results in sixty-four hexagrams.

I know the years were based off of titular years devised by the imperial court. How exactly did East Asia use this stuff above to record the months and days?

What makes pain feel 'painful'? Of course I don't mean what causes it or even what it is in the sense of it perhaps being some type of qualia, I mean what is it about pain that makes us want to avoid it? Likewise, how does feeling pleasure cause us to want to seek it? It just seems so inexplicable and bizarre and counter to our usual observation of world being being reducible.

>What makes pain feel 'painful'? Of course I don't mean what causes it or even what it is in the sense of it perhaps being some type of qualia, I mean what is it about pain that makes us want to avoid it?
the sens of self (,of mattering)

pain becomes painful because once you believe and construct a self, once you take it for personal, once you take it seriously.

People are too nihilistic[=project ''values'' on what they experience] and they claim that painful pain is bad or that ''it makes men stronger'', but pain is jsut pain, no need to tack on words on it. pain sucks and the way to stop craving going from pain to pleasure is the way to stop personifying whatever is experienced, NOT to go from pain to pleasure (like people claim and built society as an attempt to secure a comfy life (and whine when their secured pleasure turns to shit) )

In two lines:
egotism= hedonism = unhappiness

stop egotism= stop hedonism = stop unhappiness

how do you stop hedonism/egotism ? you stop it by first understanding this post so far and by attending what you experience trying to separate what you believe is your self to what you believe is not your self.

you go first from the most explicit objects that are not-you, like a car in a street that you see, to thoughts/opinions/ideas you experience, then emotions, then consciousness {this list is not detailed}
objects->thoughts->emotions->consciousness. bit by bit, you ''externalize'' what first you thought were you, like you naturally externalize a car in a street, until there is nothing left to ''be personal, of your essence, be self''.

the lack of seeing all what is written so far is the source of hedonism [=going form displeasing experience through the 5 senses+thoughts [=immorality, falsehood, randomness] to pleasing experience through the 5 senses+thoughts [=morality, truth, certainty-contingency]]
>>
>>2375833
We don't know. In the future neuroscientists might unravel what happens precisely in the brain, maybe pleasure strengthens nerve impulses while pain prevents us executing them again, even so this won't explain why we are sapient beings that experience qualia.
>>
biological incentivization for creatures with abstract thinking, where their abstract thinking can work against their reproductive abilities without the incentivization processes in place. it is likely an adaptation stemming from pain reception in creatures signaling them that they are being injured, and pleasure reception possibly to incentivize sexual reproduction and make it more likely to occur, stemming into being a good natural selective tool for just about everything that reinforces a creatures ability to survive and reproduce. this is the reason thinking animals have developed pleasure/pain reception, at least. this is "why" you feel pleasure and pain, though it's mostly just /sci/ at this point.

is there something you wanted to know beyond that? like, phenomenologically? there is nothing objective you can infer past what I've explained, what you should do with pleasure and pain is your opinion. sensation is ultimately a subjective experience, dependent on the perspective of the organism that's interpreting the sensation. it is simply a very common opinion that obtaining pleasure is desirable and worthy of action, and avoiding pain is also desirable and worthy of action, due to the biological mechanisms in place.

Shitty meme. The Austrians gave majority control of their forces to Germans after the first year or so and were the majority of troops on the Eastern Front while holding the Italian Front more or less on their own. The Ottomans and Bulgarians frequently sabotaged their own goals to help Germany.
