it's been pretty far behind western philosophy since the 19th century germans blocked their path, and has remained behind ever since. at the moment, they are currently doing things like toying with utilitarianism, contemporary ego disillusionment concepts, naturalism, and even straight up animism still gets toyed with in japan/china/korea. western philosophy is getting more to the point with a focus on linguistic concept, the roots of logical positivism, phenomenological objectivism, etc. etc.

however, on the topic of their language and mildly irrelevant, I wish the west would adopt logographic symbolism. we don't like to admit it, but chinese/japanese are much more efficient to read, and japanese has the added bonus of being 100% phonetically accurate as well. by every metric other than educational logistics, japanese is a superior written language to english.

Partially because they couldn't do it before effectivelly, but another major part was that both the UK and France were entirely focused on North America.

It is exactly when the UK and France both abandoned the focus on America(UK because of the US revolution, France because of selling off or losing the territory) that the focus on Africa started.

The Portuguese themselves never really bothered with the inland of anywhere, they did not even care much for the inlands of Brazil either, let alone Africa.

So when it all happened, it happened quite quickly because both the Americas were off limits and Africa was the only place with vacant space for Euro's.

Are you implying that China become economically successful due to protectionism? Are you serious?

America is a service economy where most of the manufacturing done is skill & technology dependent and competes by having cheap access to complicated supply chains & good trade deals with countries around the globe. Those low level assembly jobs that account for a good deal of former Chinese manufacturing that helped to grow their economy was possible because of their dirt-cheap labor cost (and now a good deal of it is leaving to places like Vietnam & Indonesia).

If you were to enact protectionist policies to try and bring back that kind of low-level manufacturing to America it would most likely make existing US manufacturing less competitive by erecting reciprocal trade barriers and cause price increases on all Americans.
