He started supporting Hitler before then so he applauded it.

He was a Strasserist and was mentored by Strasser until he was invited to attend a Hilter Speech in Munich which more or less was Hitler chastised the leftist tendencies of Strasser. Goebbels went in to it thinking Hitler was wrong and left the speech 100% convinced that Hitler was right about everything.

He kept up decent relations with Strasser all the same as they were in the same party after all but by 1930 Goebells was worried about Strasser as he had started his own Newspaper in berlin the National Socialist which was competing with the official party paper and pushing lefty spin on party ideas.

They had a falling out over it and Goebbels would eventually ban the paper.

Strasser eventually threatened to leave the party which would cause a split and total destruction of the NSDAP. The situation worsened in 1932 when Schliecher and Hindenberg offered Hitler the vice-chancellorship. Hitler declined holding out for the Chancellor title.

Strasser thought he was insane to try ask for so much when the VC position was very powerful and a stepping stone to more things.

Hindenberg were aware of the potential rift and decided to offer the position to Strasser in an attempt to split the NSDAP. Strasser left the party after Hilter demanded he refuse the offer.

Basically Joseph had lost faith in Strasser several years before and in his diary he notes that the victims of the purge were planning some kind of second revolution and sadly deserved their fate.

Hitler didn't really include Goebbels in his inner circle at this time on a political level though they were personal friends so its likely Goebbels believed Strasser was plotting something with Rohm. If Rohm was plotting something we'll probably never know.

There is a pretty good biography on Goebbels if you don't have t ime to read his diaries by Peter Longerich.

Longerich is pretty biased against Goebbles but he does cover a lot of good details. .
