Alright /his/,

I'm planning on writing a book based in a Fantasy world with multiple races (humans, orcs, elves, dwarfs, ect.) but here's the thing about it: It's supposed to be a direct parallel to human history and an analysis on historical events and civilizations. I'm trying to decide on how to go about doing this and I thought you guys could help with this.

I'll also be posting similar threads on /lit/ and /tg/, since I think they'd probably help with this idea. (please try to get along)

My question for you /his/ is just how I should work on creating the cultures for the races? I'm planning on using actual cultures for each race but how should I combine them?

I'll link the other threads below.

Not even memeing. They also know more about history than /his/ which only ever talks about Hitler, Marx and Sea peoples.

I'm not even butthurt about off topic

But they honestly have a better grasp of history compared to /his/

What are some near perfect historically accurate movies?
68 posts and 12 images submitted.

Honestly I would say there really aren't any. The closest to "accurate" is something that captures the spirit of the era while the events are mostly fictional.

I guess the TV series Rome and the movie The Wind that Shakes the Barley are the closest I can think of

If you could kill one historical figure to prevent mass violence. Who would it be and why would it be Abraham?

Pic definitely related.

Abraham is certainly a myth. I'd try Moses (probably real) or Jesus(Judaism wouldn't exist today without Christianity, and neither would Islam)

Why did the British army fight so poorly in the second world war compared to the first world war?

Other way around. I can't think of a single British victory from WWI that compares with the North African or Burma campaigns.

They didn't exactly cover themselves in glory in the First World War either, OP.

But as for their sub-par performance in WW2, it's hard to distill it down to a single factor. Some of it, is of course that they did not and never really had a long tradition of land warfare and leadership for such, so that officers and enlisted alike were often people recruited during the war and having little, if any military training beforehand. But you also had enormously bad doctrinal decisions, especially where anything tank related occurred (For example, the Matilda 2 tank, a heavy tank of the early war renowned for near invulnerability in the early parts of the desert campaign, was an infantry tank; designed to support infantry advances in heavily fortified areas. It should have been carrying munitions to help deal with pillboxes and machine gun emplacements and the like. However, those sorts of ammunition was considered the province of the artillery, so those rounds often went to anti-tank batteries, while the Matildas themselves were ususally issued AP stuff in case they ran into a tank or something despite their mission profiles not being designed for it and they being too slow for such a role anyway).

Also, in large part because of the horror of trench warfare in WW1, interwar era Britain bet hard on a strategy of war by airpower alone, a use of strategic bombing to force the enemy to surrender. Bomber Command was just about the only department of the UK military not to have to tighten its belt in the lean budgets of the 30s, and until war's end they'd get an enormous share of military spending. It turned out to be a terrible idea in practice, and would go on to suck up huge resources.

Christians: what denomination are you, and why?

I was raised Episcopalian but I'm considering joining the Catholic church. I'm pretty far left of center as far as political and social beliefs go, so I find it hard to reconcile my personal beliefs with those of the papacy (and I imagine most Catholics are very conservative).

You know how Hitler tried to irradiate the Jews and believed in the perfect race? You want to know how he got that idea? Eugenics. Indiana, a state in the US was the first to pass a law about Eugenics. Keep in mind that this shit happened in the early 1900's before WWI and even during WWI. The Eugenics Movement everybody.
Most dumb fags at a school next to where I live say, "We Beat the Nazis." And I day, "We also in a way, inspired them." The original plan was to sterilize rapists, killers, alcoholics, etc. because they tried to use science to prove their argument that if you are a white man/woman, you are automatically better scientifically than any other race. And plus, they would sterilize the family of the original criminal as well. Think about it, the Japanese were called "The Whitest Asians" for a reason back then. And yet even white people had a ladder of respect. If you were Irish, you weren't treated as good as other white people like British, or even Germans.
And you know what Hitler did with all that information back in the day? Take that idea and fucking run with it.
The rest is yours /his/.

Since it just about fits into the 25 year rule, let's talk about Japan's financial crisis and the "Lost Decade."

What happened? What caused it? Is America to blame, like some people say?

bump for interest
>>
>>2461232
There was a speculative bubble in the Japanese economy. Japanese banks lent with virtually no regard for the quality of buyers, mirroring the crisis in 2008 in the United States. The Bank of Japan realized the shit that was going on sharply raised interest rates in 1989, causing the boom to go bust. These interest rates caused stock and real estate prices to go down and the Japanese government bailed out the banks when their debt went badly. However, what was worse than the US was that these banks had so much bad debt that they couldn't really afford to do anything other than survive on bailout funds. Regardless of your perspective on the US economy post-2008, we can agree that Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, et al are not merely sitting back with their bailout funds and are actively speculating in the market.

The reasons for the Lost Decade are much more convoluted. Paul Krugman argues that it's an example of a liquidity trap: monetary policy can't lower interest rates because they're already super low. Scott Sumner and Milton Friedman would say that the Japanese Lost Decade was caused by money being too tight, not too easy. They'd argue this by saying that low interest rates are not a sign of easy monetary policy, but the opposite- low interest rates are a sign that money has been tight, so by lowering interest rates so much, the Japanese are actually having tight monetary policy, which is impeding their growth. Fumio Hayashi and Edward Prescott argue that the Lost Decade is caused by low productivity and thus monetary/fiscal policy are ineffective, since those only raise consumption.

One of the reasons for Venetian decline during 17th and 18th century was because Venetian patriciate became disinterested in overseas trade. which was the lifeblood of Venice for centuries. Instead, the patriciate attempted to emulate the liftestyle of nobility by acquiring titles and estates in the Venetian countryside (Terra ferma, compared to Stato da Mar, the overseas holdings), from which they gained more than enough income to live comfortably without having to embark on risky sea voyages. Basically the Venetian elites almost returned to medieval-like economy in times when capitalism was on the rise everywhere in the world.

One Venetian writer from 17th century bitterly admits that no one in Venice wants to trade anymore, and makes a comparison to the Netherlands "where almost every citizen, every noble is a merchant". Instead, the patricians and nobles spend their days idly on the countryside, doing absolutely nothing.

Was there any other case like this in history, when elites ditched the common interests of the nation and chose to indulge in their own selfish desires?
