Are you seriously implying the Golden Horde were the first horse archers? Because they weren't, not by roughly 2,000 years.

So I was playing A Medieval 2 Mod set in Asia and theirs an African faction called the Kingdom of Makuria, located in modern day Sudan. Apparently they managed to do what the Sassanids and Byzantines couldn't do and decisively beat the Rashidun.

So /his/, were they true kings?

I'd say most of the shit written pre-1700ish or so is made up. Especially Ancient "historian" writings.
>>
It's not made up, it actually happened.

The part people exaggerate is the effects of his excessive gift giving. I've seen it get hyperbolised into him crashing the economy, or like you say, that "gold didn't recover in value for 200 years".

What actually happened was that he slightly devalued gold in Egypt. It's quite a significant feat for one guy but it doesn't look as good on an Atlanta Blackstar headline

Philosophers just flail about within the space of unfalsifiable ideas. This book is no different. Why do people take this more seriously than the man on the street's idea if they're both consistent with scientific consensus? Marketing.

And as soon as scientists discover more stuff, philosophers will stand on their shoulders and claim that, yes, scientists may have completely isolated the neuroalgorithms / particles for consciousness, but scientists can't tell us *unknown*! Science has failed! We NEED philosophy!

Note, I'm not saying that the scientific method can tell us how to live, or that science isn't philosophy, or that there is a single scientific method, or any over reaching shit like that. I'm simply saying that there are infinitely many viewpoints (and criteria for judging viewpoints (and criteria for judging criteria...)) and academic philosophy does not exhaust these. If you point this out to philosophy fans, they will go crazy because you're challenging their dominance of the discourse.

In farsi, they call themselves irani, colloquially pronounced irooni. The i at the end makes it an adjective, and this applies to a lot of different things in farsi. You can also see this in different last names, like lavasani or tehrani or shirazi, indicating the family origin from those respective places.
>>

Asides from a couple ship designs, the Spaniards and proto-brazillians didn't really contribute much to western civilization.

Sure, the allah ackbarred the new world, but that isn't exactly the hallmark of high-civilization. In comparison to France, Italy, Germany, the English or the Dutch, the Spaniards didn't really do much anything in regards to culture or science.

That's right. Not all Meds are equal. Iberians are cultural midgets compared to Italians, who pretty much managed to bypass the "Rise and Fall" cycle of civilizations somehow. They prevented Europe from descending into barbarism through Christendom, the Italian city-states had become the wealthiest and most developed part of Europe since the 12th century and they propelled us into modern era after the Fall of Constantinople. Not to mention the several art movements that started there and the fact that Napoleon was ethnically Italic.

I wonder how the Greeks would've turned out if they hadn't been conquered by Turks though. Byzantine Empire was pretty decent and they contributed a lot during the Renaissance with important scholars that had fled to the Italian city-states because of the Turks.

How do you guys study humanities? Generally, i just read and take some notes, but i'm starting to realize that's not efficient at all. I've heard once that you should be more "active" to absorve what you are studying, but this makes no sense when you have everything available in a quick rundown nowaydays.
