Did ancient warriors suffer from post traumatic stress disorder?

Today's soldiers often have psychological problems from modern wars. It's a combination of possibly killing so many people, having your friends killed, artillery barrages, and constant fear that you may be killed in an instant;by snipers, mines, aerial strikes, suicide bombers, chemical weapons, etc.

you don't read about many ancient warriors being phased by battle. Maybe they didn't suffer as much because it was expected or they just never wrote about it because it wasn't masculine.

Was ancient hand to hand combat and violence easier to handle mentally than modern warfare?

Sure. We know about PTSD now because we focus strongly on "mental health" and there's an entire science and profession devoted to treating mental disorders, and even the military itself is in on it now and keeps an eye for out.

Nobody was thinking in those terms back then, men were kings of their homes and divorce or other recourse for a bad marriage was unavailable. So if daddy wanted to get a load on, beat the crap out of the wife, beat the crap out of the kids, fuck around carousing and getting into trouble and starting fights and so on, all the stuff we see traumatized people doing now, it would not really have been commented on. Perhaps there MIGHT be some attempts at intervention by family or something, depending on your cultural situation, if it got bad enough, but mostly you would have been free to self-destruct and otherwise act out your trauma as you like.
>>

PTSD is mostly the result of prolonged exposure to a situation in which you can be attacked at any time.

In the past, wars had distinct battles separated by lots of down time. Now, we're fighting counter-insurgency actions where soldiers just patrol around waiting to step on a mine or get shot by someone dressed as a civilian. It's a completely different experience. A modern soldier spends years in a situation where he can't compartmentalize battle away from ordinary life.

It's no surprise that they have a harder time adapting back to civilian life than soldiers in antiquity did.

Does anyone else wish they could go back in time and set up a modern PTSD support group for shellshocked WWI veterans?
It makes me so sad whenever I think about how they were treated back home after all their suffering in the trenches ;_;

So... zero people?

Since recently i saw many Germans claiming my ancestors, let's about the Franks.

WHAT ARE THE FRANKS ?

The Franks ARE SAID TO BE a Germanic tribe but it don't withstand even a blow from a learned man, here is why :

>Now, when I said Frankland just above, I meant all the provinces north of the Alps; for as it is written: “In those days ten men shall take hold out of all the languages of the nations, shall even take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew,” so at that time, by reason of the glory of Charles, Gauls, Aquitanians, Æduans, Spaniards, Germans, and Bavarians thought that no small honour was paid to them, if they were thought worthy to be called the servants of the Franks.
From Eginhard, Vita Karolini

As you can see the Germans are clearly distingished from the Franks in fact they are called "servants of the Franks", thus, calling them Germans is blablant revisionism.

Which lead to the Question who are they ? There are three theories(all based on primary source) :

Firstly is the Sicamber Theory, Clovis while being baptized was called a Suvcamber by St Remis which lead some to propose that he was Sicamber

>Bow your head proud Sicamber! Worship what you burnt ! Burn what you worshipped!"
From Gregory of Tours, History of the Franks

Secondly is the Pannonian Theory, the Franks are said to come from Pannonia a province with diverse tribes(Celts, Phrygians, Illyrians, and so on)

>The historians whose works we still have give us all this information about the Franks, but they never record the names of the kings, It is commonly said that the Franks came originally from Pannonia and first colonized the banks of the Rhine.
From Gregory of Tours, History of the Franks

Franks were Romanized Germanics from the Lowlands who mixed with the local Roman nobility of Gaul.

let's be frank OP, these guys don't have any history
>>
Thirdly is the Trojan Theory, it is a theory first mentioned in Book of the History of the Franks and in Fredegar's History of the Franks, although it can seem pretty unreal at first, a learned man will be less decisive about it :

>The origin of the Franks is due to these events. They had Priam as their first king. It is writtenin books of history how afterwards they had Frigas as king. After this, they divided into two parts. One part went to Macedonia and they are called Macedonians after the people by whom they were received and the region of Macedonia. They had been invited to give assistance to the Macedonians, who were being overwhelmed by neighbouring peoples. Afterwards when united with that people, they gave birth to a great many offspring and from that stock the Macedonians were made into the strongest of fighters. In the future, in the days of King Phyliphy [Philip] and his son Alexander, report confirms what kind of courage they possessed. For the other part, which advanced from Frigia [Phrygia], had been deceived by the fraud of Olexo [Ulysses] and, though not taken captive, had nevertheless been cast out from there. Wandering through many regions with their wives and children they chose from amongst themselves a king by the name of Francio; from him they are called Franks. Francio, it is said, was very strong in war, and for a long time fought with a great many peoples, but in the end, after devastating part of Asia, he entered Europe and settled between the Rhine or the Danube and the sea.
From Fredegar, History of the Franks

Note that NOBODY never proposed that the FRANKS WERE GERMANIC, and that it is blablant revisionism as well as the fruit of German romanticism.

dumb thread

Pre modern people:
Work six hours a day max
Lots of holidays, real holidays where the entire community would get together in song, dance, and feasting, not this "take one day off work and get drunk by yourself" bullshit
Colorful clothing, elegant ceder hats
Bountiful food including salmon, natural berries, mushrooms, and elk
Drugs nonexistent, except for some patches of psychedelic mushrooms which pop out of the earth for one season a year
Fresh water pours from ever creek and valley into a pristine sea
Wake up with the rising of the sun and the songs of the birds
Spend the winter around a fire telling the stories of your ancestors
Live within a community that will always have your back
Die knowing your name will live on in the stories and songs of your community until the end of time

Post modern people:
Work eight hours a day, plus a minimum of one hour unpaid commute time, plus the time to actually convert that money into food and resources
Maybe two weeks of holiday time per year, which you celebrate alone
Social events such as clubs and bars are strictly stratified by class, antisocial in nature, and generally revolve around the commodification of sex
Clothing is dark colored and utilitarian, patterns/flourishes are shunned or garish, hats are ugly cotton sacks and rarely worn
Food is limited to corn products and factory meat, anything that's not genetically modified and doesn't come from a can generally costs an arm and a leg
A new potentially deadly drug gets invented every week and can be bought by anyone with an internet connection. Tobacco and liquor everywhere, addiction is common
Pollutants which leak from every ditch and pipe into a brown murky sea
Lie in bed till three in the morning while the cars zip by outside your cramped apartment
When you die every scrape of your existence will be scrubbed from your home so it can be sold to highest bidder

Seconding.

Also look up In Our Time, it's a BBC program where a guy interviews three or four professors on various historical topics.

History of WWII is also good, though there is too much filler imo. Skipping his blog at the end of each episode and skipping the interview/profile episodes makes it better I think.

No, it completely rejects LTV.

How?? It seems like Henry George essentially adopted Adam Smith's theories of the pricing of goods. It also seems like he understood the worker's added value to be equal to the given wages, which are really just a return on labor, which he says is equal to the return on capital.

In fact, under his system, wages determine the rate of return on capital, not the other way around.

None of them depend on the LTV.

I've thought about it as well, and i think it's very much a modern thing. When you contemplate it, consent really doesn't make sense. Imagine for example if an officer had to acquire the consent of each of his soldiers for every order he gave them.
