To accept violence, even for self-defense, is to go against the fundamental teachings of christianity, and such a person cannot be called christian.

The First World War, often referred to as the Great War, is widely acknowledged to be one of the most significant and bloody conflicts in human history. Elusive, however, is a consensus among historians pertaining to its causes and the motivations behind its inception. The dominant narrative within Western culture, espoused by Fritz Fischer in Germany's Aims in the First World War, attributes the outbreak of war in 1914 to aggressive German policy and a prolific belief held by German officials in the invincibility of her armies. This view is compounded by Niall Ferguson in The Pity of War, who, like Fischer, views Germany's administration as aggressively expansionist but diverges from the idea that Germany was alone in her guilt for the outbreak of war; Britain also played a key role with her clumsy and ambiguous declarations on neutrality, which could be interpreted "more or less according to taste". Some historians detach Germany from any intention to begin a war, instead suggesting her to be a victim of incompetent ministers (namely Sazanov and Yanushkevitch), while shifting blame towards Russia and her intimidating mobilisation, provoking a preventative war from German and Austrian officials. Such a view is held by Sean McMeekins in The Russian Origins of the First World War.
