First of all, language - until 1696 oficial language of Lithuania was Rus(ish?) language, after 1696 Polish. Baltic language was used only by peasants. Generally after middle age all of nobility speak only Rusish and Polish - never "Lithuanian"
But wait there is more even King WŁADYSŁAW JAGIEŁŁO do not speak Lithuanian, he doesn't know this language because he know Rusish.
Secondly geography - until end of First World War Lithuania was only geographic concept like Greater Poland or Austria(pre world war two). Core land of Lithuania was smale area around Vilnus and modern Polish-Belorusian boarder.
Lastly people itself - Mickiewicz, Ogiński, Kościuszko they are all Lithuanians but they speak, write and think Polish. Why? Because in their time lithuania was geographic construct. Lithuanian speaking people from region around Vilnus was't even civilians of their country.
When modern "Lithuanians" decide to creat mono-ethnical state without Poles and Belorussian they lose all claiment to be heir of Grand Dutchy of Lithuania
