My Christian upbringing is hindering my integration with modern society
I refuse to lose my faith because of some stupid fucking heathens
But I hate all this self-limiting and restraint I must show, while others are happy as animals. I restrict myself from enjoying certain media, for fear of them being satanic/demonic. I stop certain self-expressions, for want of being virtuous. I forgive, as that is what I believe is best. And all these things end up hurting me.
What do?
> satanic/demonic
Literal mental disorder. Seek help.
You've already lost your faith if you reject virtue and restraint.
did colonisation bring any benefits to the people it colonised?
Well we should have never gotten involved.
Just kicked back and kept out medicine, agriculture technology, electricity, computers, cars, refrigeration, telephones, computers, the internet and space travel all to ourselves.
And just let them keep doing what they were doing without the evil awful white people.
Shit if we had kept it all and acted completely selfishly we would have colonized the rest of the solar system by now.

This
Imagine a world where basic physics and chemistry and simple shit like electricity and combustion engines are a closely guarded secret by Europeans practicing some kind of hermetic order type religion and the entirety looks to Europe as a continent of literal wizards.

If enough resources are given and the battlefield is suitable, swarming is the smuggest, most effective tactic.
How can the Byzantine Empire claim to be THE Roman Empire when they were Greek, whereas the Roman Empire was Latin?
>>2684121
They WUZ
>How can the Byzantine Empire claim to be THE Roman Empire
Because it was the same state, there was an unbroken political continuity.
There's literally nothing more to it than that. It was the same political entity.

What does attic Greek sound like to modern Greeks?
>>2683982
... like Attic Greek...
They can't understand it at all. The older ones maybe because Greece had a fantasy language as official language until the military rule which was modeled after the ancient Greek language. Modern Greeks are a disgrace to the Greeks of the past. The Turkish rule destroyed them, made them not paying their taxes. Christianity also destroyed ancient Greek culture
>>2683982
What about Cellar Greek?
Did the Byzantine Greeks recognize in their own time how different their "Roman Empire" was from the Latin speaking pagan empire of a thousand years before? I understand they considered themselves "Roman" and heir to the legacy of the empire but still there has to be some kind of acknowledgement that they were fundamentally different.
>Byzanine Greeks
They wouldn't have called themselves Greeks or Hellenes or anything like that. Until around the 13th century the Hellenic identity still had associations with paganism.
Nobody thought of Rome as being a "pagan empire", after all by this point it had been Christian for far longer than it had been Pagan.
>I understand they considered themselves "Roman" and heir to the legacy of the empire
You don't understand the situation very much at all.
They didn't view themselves as "heir to the legacy of the empire", they WERE the empire. What it meant to be Roman was entirely dependent on the present culture of the Byzantine Empire, because they were Romans.
They never stopped viewing themselves as being in continuity with the Roman Empire of Classical Antiquity. It was the same state, with enduring traditions. Until the very end, they launched military expeditions to reclaim places like Italy and Egypt because they recognised that those places had formerly been part of the Roman Empire.
>>2683876
Some things that might be of interest to you OP are the writings of John Lydus the Suda, both which show that the Roman Empire of the 6th and the 10th century viewed themselves as being the same state as the early Roman Republic.
>>2683885
Not OP but surely you realize that the average Roman of 1200 shared very little with his counterpart a millennia prior? Different capital, different heartland, different language, different religion, different political structure, etc. etc.
There was absolutely continuity and this doesn't invalidate that (William the Conqueror would hardly recognize modern England), but it's interesting to ponder if any Late Medieval Romans actually stopped to notice how different they've become from Ancient Rome.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arianism
>Arianism, in Christianity, is a Christological[1] concept that asserts that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was begotten by God the Father at a point in time, is distinct from the Father and is therefore subordinate to the Father.[2]
Holy crap, this was something that I always thought about, and I only just now discovered that it was an actual thing in the church. There's literally nothing wrong with Arianism: if there is a Son and there's a Father, then the Son MUST be below the Father, in this world or in the next.
>if there is a Son and there's a Father, then the Son MUST be below the Father
The ancient greek religion had it the other way around, so I don't see why it has to be dad>son, and not son>dad or son=dad. An omnipotent being should be able to create an equal or greater being, the real mystery is why he would create lesser beings.
>>2683759
well it's related to the fact that in the canonical gospels Jesus repeatedly says he's lesser than the Father
>>2683789
That's just showing humility, it can't be assumed that he meant it literally.
Germany 1933: The Communists somehow win the election and are able to curtail the opposition in the same year similar to Hitler in our timeline.

How strong have nationalist/regionalist movements been in France compared to Spain or Italy?
What role did language standardization play in the creation of modern French identity?
The conception of "the French" preceded the unification of France linguistically, which didn't really happen until like the 1870's or something but France has had a long history of centralization to the point that only Breton and Corsican exist at any level any more

Was the bombing of Dresden really necessary?
It was payback for two World Wars albeit on a considerably lesser level.
Take that as you will.
>>2683322
The carpet bombing of civilians probably wasn't t b h, the operation was originally supposed to target the industrial sector of Dresden and to destroy german infrastructure choke points as both the western and eastern front were closing in one another in order to prevent as much guerilla "resistance" warfare as possible.
But in the end they went for the "let's destroy the german morale" attitude. And yes, there was a certain element of payback into this.
>>2683322
It was morally justified
I think that the power and influence of modern media are largely overlooked. People can't even grasp it, it is something unprecedented in human history.Never before has existed such a force that could invade human minds with such ease, to mold them and shape them into anything it desires. It's not just a voice of strongmen in power, it is a horryfing machine per se which can easily establish itself as an absolute authority in practically all things shaping existence. Something not even the most tyranical rulers of the past could ever imagine.
Truth is forever lost in pits of lies. Every agenda, agency, lobbyst group has its own little truth they install in discreet or not so discreet ways into our minds. There are virtually no real differences between information and disinformation anymore. People voluntary stay in their mental cages prepared just for them because it's all they have ever experienced and will ever experience. You can't realize you're being lied to when all you've ever heard in your life is a lie one upon another. Quite brilliant, really. Like a slave being born into slavery from slave parents.
You might say, so what? It was always like this, people have never known true freedom. It might be so. But the world of the past was a larger one. The people lived in their own microworlds, safe and secluded. Information traveled much slower. The world of the past was a local one, of ancient customs that were stronger than any manmade law. The truths were ancient and strong, ingrained deeply in people. Today truth is changed every month or so to suit new trends and needs. Between a Man and State there existed an entire set of protective layers: traditions, customs, communes, guilds. Our global world has no secrets. Every single piece of our lives is at disposal at all times. At some point the State smashed all barriers that separated it from a Man, making him see Her face to face, unprotected, weak, and frightened.
To conclude, freedom and truth are harder than ever to obtain. I've heard million times in my lifetime how both of those can't be anything else but subjective. This is only natural to say in a world where millions of brands of freedom and truth exist. Apart from picking one particular freedom to enjoy and one particular truth to follow, both of them being pushed on me from those above me, sadly i see no alternative. Maybe living in cave for the rest of my life.
It's even more dangerous that people would rather listen to YT celebrities or blogers than real scientists. I blame this recent rise of holocaust denial on the Internet and social media. It's a great platform to spread propaganda.

Academia has been subverted by marxists. 'Real scientists' get ostracized all the time if they don't toe the line of political correctness.
