How comes it took until the mid 1800s for repeating firearms to become standard?
Were they really that hard to make? I've seen designs of really old repeating rifles and revolvers like pic related that I cannot possibly imagine would add significantly to the complexity and cost of each gun. Was it a case of nobody seeing them as a significant advantage? Maybe they weren't as powerful per shot? I'd like to hear some opinions about this.

standardized and interchangeable parts are the problem here, and those only became available with the industrial revolution.
>>
The ability to manufacture cartridges did not develop until the mid 19th century. If someone wanted to fire a repeating weapon they had to load gunpower seperately for each round.
>>
>>3358282
I didn't think of that, it would make sense, traditional rifles from before that have almost no moving parts, which are the easiest to break. Right?

>>3358286
I've seen some designs that give you space for powder, tho I'd imagine they are a bit of a safety nightmare.

I was also remembering how high rate of fire and accuracy weren't that prioritized in guns during these times because of all the smoke guns would create, which might have played a part.

>WW2 planes break the laws of physics
>Men surviving large caliber guns and shrug it off like it's nothing
>Innacurate use of emblems
I swear to god Red Tails hits so many I don't know where to start. Even the fucking emblem one, they used the 3rd Waffen SS panzer division totenkopf on a plane rather than the authentic one used by Kampfgeschwader 54, at least it would've been tolerable.

I'm very interested in how radical idealogical change occurs.

It doesn't take much looking at Japan to realize that they're this strange mishmash of western ideals and eastern ideals. The fact that the Americans basically bombed the nationalism and deification of the emperor out of them, then rebuilt them to what they are today astounds me.

>break up old feudal holds on land
>installed a democratic system that is still stable today
>fed them new deal policies till we had to red scare them in the face of communist russian
>they are naturaly conservative thanks to confusian influence
>their progressive party calls itself the japanese communist party because even their own commies are nowadays so conservative that they don't even feel like dropping their name

Cont.

In terms of modern progressivism, its very interesting if we compare to the west's:

>while there is very much a patriarchy and glass ceiling for women, their entire population is so overworked that women openly are fine with being stay at home moms, as raising kids and working is nearly impossible
>their right wing conservative Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe is trying to increase diversity in the workplace not out of a progressive call for equality, but to boost the economy

As a burger is interesting to see the right wing approach to progressivism.

I read pic related, Tezuka's story about how one familly deals with American ocupation. Its 60's manga corny and fucked up in plenty of spaces but the idea of one family dealing with radical cultural change was incredibly interesting.

Can you guys tell me anything more about the transition from Nationalist Imperial Japan to their modern state? How long did reconstruction take? How long did it take for Japan to seemingly stand on its own two feet? What was the japanese response to their economic recession in the 1990s that they're still recovering from? Did the recession humble them in a similar way to losing WW2?

Reading suggestions would be helpful too, historical manga would be particularly lit. I read Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths in one sitting.

Japan is an outlier. That was not the first time they experienced large culture shifts. The Meiji one was much larger.

Octopus for some reason seems to be the default representation of evil in propaganda posters. Not sure why, Octopi are pretty benign animals. First example, the Japanese octopus is depicted as grabbing hold of the Philippines.

Hard question, as right now I am sick and taking antibiotics, which if did not existed I would be dead

So I would say American... If you want a place just to use your money and power to look good and discover your sexual thing I would just go to Brazil
>>
Did upper class Romans live under a different law code in the Imperial age, or did had the distinction fallen out of favor by that point?
>>
Upper class Roman all the way. Superior society, more advanced philosophy, the list goes on. Anyone who chooses option 2 is probably descended from slaves; don't worry, I will let your ancestors live so long as they serve my household well.

Why did the Soviets overreact to the Germans in WWII?
The Russians killed so many Germans and raped so many German women. Wouldn't the world had been better off if the Germans had beaten them?
I think the Russians went a little too far on the Germans over WWII. Sure the Wehrmacht was brutal and yes the Holocaust was pretty shitty and the Jews didn't deserve that treatment but why did the Russians behave so barbarically towards the Germans?

Fuck Operation Barbarossa amd Hitler, is there any way Napoleon's invasion of Russia could have succeeded?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>3357241
yes, if he listened to his polack generals that told him to occupy ukraine, belarus and baltic states to get supplies and wait out the winter.
>>
I've thought about this a bit, since nappy's goal was to force Russia into the continental system, why didn't he just occupy the Russian baltic coast to cut them off from the British?
>>
>>3357241
absolutely not, the Russians denied Napoleon anything in terms of food or a decisive battle, and Russia could afford to just sit there and never engage Napoleon, and let the lack of food and sheer attrition take its toll. Even with Moscow captured, the Tsar still had very little reason to approach Napoleon and negotiate surrender.

Essentially, Russia could've won without ever firing a single shot if they really wanted to. Just starve the Grande Armee to death by denying them any food or shelter.
