I've had some small experience in law enforcement and most of the complaints about these types of shootings are due to ignorance.

People get stabbed all the time by stupid shit like that. People die. Police are trained that when someone comes at you with a weapon, you take them down. No "yeah but what if..." questions. If someone is willing to come at you with a weapon its you or them.

I'm from Russia and worked for 7 years as ambulance worker and i saw multiple confrontations of out of control / drunk people with cops. I saw a a dude rush cops with an axe and they shot him in the leg. He fell, they beat him up some more with batons and took to local precinct. Saw a mental patient who ran away from local mental institute rush cops with knife, once again he just got beat up with batons. Yes, we were on one call where dude pulled a gun on police officer and he got shot without hesitation.

You have tasers, pepper spray for a reason. Majority of situations can be resolved without fatal result. The way they train the cops is just not right in my opinion. Shoot to kill is just an easy way of covering their asses. Easier to just say that killing person was only option.

You use a taser when someone is a threat and using physical force will endanger the lives of yourself, the suspect, and/or others. You use a gun when there is no other way of peacefully deescalating the situation and death of yourself or others is imminent.
