You only need basic Photoshop skills to do this. What's really important is to understand how it should look. The light, texture, contrast, perspective.
You need to have a well educzted eye to make good fakes

you could spend time and effort in photoshop
or you could print out your design on appropriate paper, paste it to an old paperback, throw it in your backpack, shake for 15 minutes, fold over the covers a few times, and be done with it

this is definitely practical effects, note that the fake fading on the spine is only applied to the text and not to the wear, and that the wear has the "hair" of worn drawing paper rather than the cracks and tears of an old paperback's thin cardboard.
