And 3rd
Great idea. Awesome balance. Poor hierarchy. Horrific Alignment. Terrible typesetting.
Looks like you tried to run before you could walk. A good idea undersold by little (perhaps no) understanding of basic principles of Typography or Grid structures. Buy or pirate some Lynda courses on either and it should help you hugely.
>>306969
>Poor hierarchy
If you're talking about the tracklist, it wasn't meant for it to pull attention.
>Horrific Alignment
Could you expand a bit on this? One block of text is on the right, the other on the left, both respect the middle of the canvas.
>Terrible typesetting
I need a little more here too
Thanks for the input
>>306969
Seconding OP in that, these criticisms can be so helpful to people who stumble across these threads and want to learn. You should really expand on your points.
>>306969
would like to hear you elaborate too anon
>>306969
Don't be such a condescending dick. This is pretty decent work - I agree the type setting is a bit off, but the alignment and hierarchy are far from horrible.
I'm not even OP btw, kek
>>307048
I was thinking the same ... not bad at all. I've seen worse things from "formal" professionals trying to get hired at big ad agencies.
>>307048
Mate, I wasn't trying to be condescending at all, I think you may have projected a little bit onto my post.
>Poor Hierarchy
Lets start with this.
The tracklist is of equal weight, similar size and colour to the 'little paragraph'. You say this isn't meant to pull. Okay, but is this art or graphic design? In a poster inspired by the album, you should still consider hierarchy for your viewer. They want to see the tracklist more than random details. It should rank higher.
I also see 'f.8.0' before the rest? A cool arty reference, but should be a detail that doesn't interrupt the main information.
>Horrific Alignment
Notice on that post I linked to, the columns have 0 gutter width, and the second wave of track lists are right aligned to nothing. Is this 'creative freedom'? Maybe, but why would it pretend to take the structure of the grid and not use it properly? It looks awkward, indecisive, and unconsidered. It would be much more effective if it either did use a grid structure or completely abandoned it.
Also, certain details from that 'little paragraph' are misaligned by an awkward number of pixels—zoom in and see! This is shoddy finishing.
>Terrible typesetting
Inconsistent leading, hierarchy and alignment. It also reads as RETRC GRADE.
Make your work better, man. Do you wanna make it or nah? I said it was a good idea, and OP clearly has a good eye. That's not enough though.
>>307058
i get you... I'm a strong believer that design is not an art form, specially for those who think they will have an amazing time doing this... which is not always true...
Criticism is always good when is constructive.
>>307058
Anon, OP here. Thanks for expanding on your reply.
>The tracklist is of equal weight, similar size and colour to the 'little paragraph'.
I agree completely with this, an element as important as the album's tracklist shouldn't be treated equally as a simple decoration.
I'm glad you brought the art vs. graphic design idea, because this poster was approached from a completely aesthetic point of view, pure fun and visual candy. If it were an official piece to complement the artists' work I'd fix hierarchy and pay much more attention to the informational aspect of design.
I also agree with the alignment, I could polish it a bit more while playing with the dimensions.
The misalignments were on purpose since the "little paragraph" is a piece of code, so those that are tabbed to the right are child lines of code whose parent is above. This is visually unpleasant to you, and I understand that, but it wasn't an mistake or quick copy-paste.
Finally, the typography. I followed your advice and signed up for Lynda to check out the courses.
>It also reads as RETRC GRADE.
Here's my only disagreement, I've showed it to plenty of people and nobody has commented on that. I thought it was enough since the G is also masked.
Thanks again for the advice and rawness. No need to sugar coat anything. I'm a high school senior on my first job as a designer, (not underage so don't ban me again mods) so getting criticism and praise on work is really helpful.

Thanks a lot anon, appreciate it.
>>306965
I really like this one. Quite simple, clean and well organized.
I personally would try a different font for "RETRO GRADE".
Is that a Paul Renner's "Futura"?
>>307501
Who else's Futura would it be?
>>307504
There are a lot of modern reinterpretation of that font.
>>307505
Uh kind of but they all still admit Paulie R designed it. I don't think anybody would argue that.
>>307508
Man wtf is wrong with you?
Just read something before...
Paul Renner died in 1956 and after his death a lot of totally new futura types were released... That's All.
>>307501
Yes anon, good old Futura; I've caught its bug lately. Futura and San Francisco, Bodoni for serif.
Were you thinking about Milano or something similar?
>>307068
Aight I just wrote some long ass post about how design is art or whatever and my phone deleted so fuck. Anywho design is art, not fine art, but as a product of creative thinking, it is art.
>>307548
Bodoni is rad sometimes, just don't use it as your body text, gots to much weight contrast.
>>307549
Have you tried Avenir?
>>307557
Avenir Heavy, or maybe black. Try something if you like it.
>>307550
Oh never, always for big visually appealing titles.

>>307585
Are you asking me specifically anon? Did you do this?
>>307585
The red is not easy on the eyes, also the background is a little plain. I'm only seeing mid to dark value ranges on the monochrome photo of the woman, although it is in the center so I can't tell if it's supposed to be a focal point or not. Not sure why there's a dark fade on the C and S it makes it harder to read. That general area of lettering is kind of busy too because of the letters overlaid directly over the skirt. Try thinking about value shapes and how it leads the eyes. There is a tangent under the S and the corner of the A caused by the shadow side of the clothing. Those are bad.

this bothers me alot and draws unnecesary attention
>>307104
AND THAT DEAR 4CHAN IS HOW YOU TAKE CRITISISM.
ps: loved the tabulations in the code, i would make them a little bit more explicit, meaning bigger.
>>306965
fucking love this use of futura.
i would make the whole code smaller so it fits in the circle.
the little corner that stands outside has a lot of contrast between background and type.
i don't have access to photoshop right now so i can't check. but make sure the blue X is the center of the circle, and that the green lines are equal.
also does the change of alignment between the two paragraphs of code follow any grid?
maybe it should. its very close to the center line between retro and grade.
>>308533
I think I could do that anon, thanks for the reminder.
>>308538
I've been exploring Futura a lot lately. I'll work on the alignment!
>>308538
>>308531
You both mentioned breaking the circle's boundaries, which I did "on purpose", meaning that I thought it would be interesting, but I guess it does look disorganized.
>>306965
The texture is a bit gaudy, would be nicer without it
>>308664
>You both mentioned breaking the circle's boundaries, which I did "on purpose", meaning that I thought it would be interesting.
it does look interesting, but since its in the geometric center it draws a lot of atention.
also my ocd.
