Why are agencies so scared to hire a designer full-time?
>>
>>303391

Several reasons.

- They don't have enough steady work for a FT designer.
- They don't want to pay the taxes and benefits required of a FT employee
- They don't want the headaches of getting rid of a FT employee, if they decide that they don't need/want you at some future point
- They only need you now because they temporarily have more work than they can do
>>
>>303401
This.

I've been in a 40+ hr/wk contract position for almost three years with four other designers because our boss/client doesn't want to deal with proper employment: taxes, benefits, etc.
>>
>>303408
It'd be pretty great if employers started treating us like human beings some day
>>
> tfw only need a designer for 2-3 short term projects
> might have to deal with this pent up rage during interviews

Are you guys this upset at small businesses offering contractual work?
>>
>>303413
They would, if you'd offer some real value for your time. For instance: an engineer is highly more valuable than a designer. He will always be employed with a full time position, health insurance, 401k, <$100k/annum. Why? Well that's simple—design is not always a necessity and not always a priority, unless it's some high-end product sponsored by millions in investments. An app can work just fine with a shitty logo, no matter what it looks like. In the meantime, they'll resort to the minimum necessary, i.e. anything that's one step above Fiverr.
>>
>>303415
Advertise the position here when you'll need to hire. I'm not a faggot so I won't baby-rage.
>>
>>303413
Hey I get paid well enough and the work is consistent so I don't really give a shit. Plus there's no grey area of moonlighting cause I have my own corporation and can do whatever the fuck I want.
>>
>>303391
why are you so scared of freelance?
>>
>>303416

an engineer THINKS he is more valuable than a designer.

>mfw I work with engineers
>mfw I have to get them to make something for me. The designer. By request of CEO.
>mfw engineers bitch about taking orders from a designer
>mfw engineers purposely don't do what they're told and try to 'design' it themselves.
>mfw engineers are escorted out of the building by security
>>
>>303416
Also nobody wants to use a shitty looking app. Nobody wants to buy a shitty looking product. It's human nature. Aesthetic is what most people care about most.
>>
>>303450
lol funny new projection-flavored pasta.
>>303451
Only snobs, wannabes and children do. Lawyers don't care about the kerning in their name. Hell, Brafman Associates doesn't even have a website and they take the biggest cases. Big investment companies that cash in millions of dollars have outdated WordPress themes simply used as a placeholder. Look at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and tell me that ain't basic af. You probably also expect the Bloomberg Terminal to update their UI with some fresh typefaces and replace those MS-DOS charts with some animated Dribbble pie charts, right? Enterprise level software often times has Win98 themes. You know why? Because it works. That's what matters. Who cares if a laptop looks nice if it's completely useless in terms of utility? Well, apple sheep do, that's who. Which brings me back to the beginning of my argument. Companies use the design argument to fake value where there isn't.

Why are you here?

Design is building something from nothing. It's being god, in a way. Design is extremely powerful.

People who lack the ability to harness the power of design are so spiteful.

The corporations / companies that are fine with out a website were well established before the internet was a big deal. Most of their clients can't even use the internet because they're old as fuck - and dying. If they were to start from scratch now they would be doomed without one.
>>
>>303474
>Why are you here?
What do you mean? Is a design forum an echo chamber, a safe space, a hive mind, a circle jerk where only a certain kind of argument is allowed? I'm here to give you truth and reason and you're stubbornly refusing it.
>People who lack the ability to harness the power of design are so spiteful.
People who disagree with me are so spiteful. FTFY.
>It's being god, in a way.
That's one heluva hyperbolic exaggeration there.
>The corporations / companies that are fine with out a website were well established before the internet was a big deal. Most of their clients can't even use the internet because they're old as fuck - and dying. If they were to start from scratch now they would be doomed without one.
I'm not even going to bother with this to be quite honest.
You go and tell KPMG, part of The Big Four, that they need a new logo, and how they're going to get more clients because of a smart, fancy new style guide. $25 billions revenue last year. I'm sure they could afford it.

Why is it so hard to understand that design is not the center of the Universe? You're over-inflating its importance.
>>
>>303478
Design is what people in the future remember about culture. It's a part of our legacy.

I'm not a self hating negative Nancy. I wouldn't do it if I didn't feel it was important. By the way, you're being just as stubborn. Maybe you shouldn't work in an industry you don't respect.
>>
>>303478
Not the anon you're replying to, but what proffesion or training are you in?

Also, I agree with some of your sentiments, but I think in battling with 'designer elitism' you're swinging the pendulum a bit too far the other way, in your tone.

You're right in that design doesn't serve any utilitarian functions necessarily (obviously there are many design disciplines that do just that), but there's something to be said for a creative profession that is still, on some level, lucrative for the common man (As opposed to, say, the insular culture of fine art) whilst also staying safe from the encroaching inevitable automation threatened by robotics and AI. Yeah design and aesthetics can be seen as unimportant fluff work, but you need that sort of fluff to keep the gears of economy moving.
>>
Tons and tons of agencies are always hiring a designer. You're just not good enough to get in.

One of the hard parts about transitioning from freelancer to agency designer is location. A lot of good designers are in the middle of nowhere and not every agency has the budget to pay for transportation and temporary housing.

I live in a big-ish city and have worked full time as a designer. The best agency's here outsource to NYC / LA designers (who are more often than not hiring freelancers for some of their work).

OP just get good at managing your finances like a business. You'll be in a better position than a salaried one and be able to fire crappy clients instead of dealing with a crappy corporate job.

It has to do with annoying regulations.
