Moodboarding is a good start. Look at

and type business logo, collect a bunch of idea and formulate the style you want for your business.
Try to think of a witty idea for the theme of your logo. e.g not just a graduation cap. maybe a brain or some word play. this is just is just the ice berg if you want to make a timeless logo that represents your business well!

Sounds fair to me,100 bucks for a Company Logo that you can keep forever. I mean it all depends on how it looks.

If you can do it yourself - do it yourself.
If you need to hire someone, pay them what their time is worth.

If you think you're qualified to design your own logo when you know nothing about design or the industry rates WHY would anyone want to trust you with education?

He just needs a simple logo. And that's it. Something to put on a piece of paper or a website. Nothing else. Not everyone is a tryhard wannabe. Not every company requires a logo in the first place.
