best book i bought this year by far. Don't let it's size or price put you off, it's biblical. Along with that I'd recommend The Elements of typographic style. Currently reading that, it's hard at first but once you've become savvy with type terms you'll do fine. Making and breaking the grid is by far the 'worst' book i got.

dont bother dude, know your onions sucks. Go for "design as art - bruno munari", "graphic design manual - armin hofmann" and "grid systems in graphic design - josef muller-brockmann"

Graphic Design Manual is sooo good dude.
Haven't read Design as Art, what does it talk about ? Is it text-heavy ?
