How do I get into UX/UI?

I've got a degree in graphic design and have been in agencies for the past three years doing a range of print, digital and motion.

I enjoy the digital aspects the most and definitely want to specialise in it. Although it seems that today you can't simply just be a 'digital designer' and you need to have some knowledge of UX.

Is it something you can just pick up/learn about as you go along, or does it need a more intensive course? I've been using Sketch/Invision for the past year if that helps.

I just feel like UX is a bit of a buzzword because it's not like I don't design websites without the user journey in mind. We all make sure things are intuitive, accessible, legible etc.

UX is more involved in making sure the website is functional and accessible. It's all about user testing and lots of refining and optimisation.

UX is a meme
>>
>>289683
Expect the uxperts to tell you that it's not a meme, and how difficult it is to do it.

UXpert here. Its easy, just have to learn some processes. Its not a meme.
People are mad because the pay is huge.
Went from doing GD/UI work as a grad, then went from Junior-Midweight over the last 5 years. I'm now doing freelance work for larger corporations. The last project I did was for a bank where I was brought on to the tail end of a 2 year project, because they were desperate I could charge them £800 per day, 5 days a week for just under three months.

Are you also responsible for coding? GBP100/h is ridiculous.
>>
>>289727
can you explain the actual difference between ui and ux. changing 'interface' to 'experience' and placing importance on whatever questionable 'empirical' methods you employ seems like a bubbly marketing meme to me.

Are you a developer or a designer?

I'm purely a designer. I know a bit about html/css/JavaScript to get by. How can I transition from being a normal designer into a UX/UI specialist?

I've only ever worked on responsive websites. Never any apps/product/software stuff.

Web/digital designers just basically design visuals of the website which they hand over to the developers.

UX designers are essentially web/digital designers that get more actively involved with the client, the developers and the user. Lots of testing, using theory and research to scientifically optimise the product.

When I was at a smaller agency clients really didn't see the value in UX. They didn't want to pay for any testing and it was literally 'design 3 versions pick one and roll with it'. Now I'm at a larger agency it's a lot more rigorous back and forth between the clients and devs, constantly tweaking to make the best experience for the end user.

Adobe just relased a new programme with there cc that's designed just for ux that would be a good place to learn

Adobe XD is a pile of shit and still in beta. Use Sketch with Craft and Invision if you want to be taken seriously.
>>
Is UX purely for apps/software or can it be applied to normal websites?

>We all make sure things are intuitive, accessible, legible etc.

That is extremely optimistic and naive of you to say. Why the fuck would you say that? We dont all do that AT ALL. There are horrific designs and codes all around us every fucking day. I can't even focus on anything else in your post, or even begin to help you with your question/problem with this insane thing you just ended your topic with. WHAT THE FUCK.
>>
>>289856
it applies to everywhere
>user experience
anywhere you go there's user experience
>>
>>289882
I think by 'we' he was referring to people who are web design professionals and not half of the plebs which browse /gd/
