or do you use Squarespace or Cargocollective or Readymag or Semplice?
>>
>>288456
ooobbvvviously just use squarespace.
>>
>>288460
Squarespace isn't that great for a designer, it's pretty bland stuff. I'd recommend Cargocollective. More of a gallery design suited to projects.

I use Carbonmade.

I disagree, there's loads of portfolio themes and once you get your head around it you can do quite a bit.

Also who wants crazy webpages these days?
>>
I guess it mostly depends on what type of designer you are, but doesn't it defeat the purpose if you are using Squarespace? Doesn't it make you look like an amateur? Shouldn't it be your job designing it? Of course, if you're doing illustrations, then this might not be your field.
>>
I think any Graphic Designer these days should at least have an intermediate knowledge of HTML5/CSS. I'm not a web developer but I will be building my own portfolio site from scratch. Its really not that hard and its another string to your bow
>>
>>288673
I'm using squarespace for now until I complete my portfolio.

After that I can fully focus on making my own site. I'm pretty well rounded in html/css/jquery
>>
>>288673

This to a certain degree. Have something with a 100% your own URL that is functional, your level of understanding isn't the most critical part.
>>
>>288673
Learning code to make a single website makes no sense at all.
You should focus on your design skills, maybe that's why there are so many mediocre all-round designers and not many good specialised designers.
>>
>>288725

It's "design" not "art"

The rules for visual communication vary through medium, having not just a good grasp, but a functional understanding of varying mediums only makes you a stronger designer.

I'm really really strong in print process and CNC, should I intentionally ignore other mediums? Or is it professionally prudent to become skilled in all formats?
>>
>>288725
In fact you are probably one of those moron "professionals" I constantly have to deal with, the type of "professional" constantly creating things that do not work practically speaking, things that need to be literally redesigned.

So yeah, ignore that practical reality and focus on your "design" skills (quoting you) - which you are basically saying is ignore "design" and play at art.
>>
>>288726
>I'm really really strong in print process

I just pay a little extra (charge the client) for the print technician to do all the stuff for me, you wasted your time learning that stuff.

>>288727
Knowing what is possible to make with HTML and CSS is enough, you don't need to know how to code to deliver doable web design pages to a coder.
>>
>>288728
>I just pay a little extra (charge the client) for the print technician to do all the stuff for me, you wasted your time learning that stuff.

That literally doesn't make any sense, what are you talking about?

If you take certain routes in a design process it is incompatible with it's output format - that is what I was establishing through anecdotal scenarios.

Do you work in design professionally? What is your scope of work?
>>
>>288729
>what are you talking about?

I don't do any of the pre-flight work, i leave that to the print technician.
>>
>>288730

You are completely missing the point.

Understanding process is fundamental to good design, it is what separates art from design. Entire firms flourish because they are able to connect artistic process and branding concepts to real world application and implementation. You are a hack, and you just have never been exposed to your own inadequacy before.
>>
>>288732
>You are a hack

How can you tell?
Have you ever seen my work? I focus on making aesthetically pleasing work for print and web, and i do understand you have to make your design accordingly to work with both.
I don't want to learn about pre-flight because that won't make my design any better, the only thing it might do is make me a little more cash, taking the pre-flight work money myself.
>>
>>288456
I roll my own.
>>
>>288725

I'm not talking about "learning to code". I didn't mention JS or anything back end.

HTML/CSS is not coding. Its simply learning to use markup. Its easier than learning to use design software, literally anyone should be able to do it but its surprising how many designers can't/don't /won't
>>
>>288673
I was waiting for this comment. Though I am much more comfortable with Cargo or Carbon.
>>
I had a self made portfolio years ago, decided it was way to outdated to work with and moved my stuff over to Cargocollective.

Easy to set up, their tech dep. replies to questions in a precise and timely manner.
