New logo thread, the old one is a month old and is going almost a day between posts.
Anyone else conceptualizing for 2017? - Don't be shy- post stuff, even work in progress or concept stuff. This board is desperate for content.
>>288034
something I did for school. Still a work in progress of course. I'll probably make the colours flashier. Is it readable? Are there fonts that look like what I've drawn?
>>288037
Man that's a solid foundation you have built there. I don't have a ton to add - but I will say this - I have built fonts with similar "brush logic" to yours and I have a feeling it's going to be too thin and sharp to the eye - although that can be addressed down the road.
>>288053
Is it hard to build a font? I'm a complete noob in graphic design
>>288053
My personal feelings are that it's a lot of input for minimal output - not so much hard as laborious when you compare your body of work after building letters for 3 hours vs illustrating for the same amount of time.
That said I find it immensely gratifying and freeing to be able to build letters from scratch, and at times it can accelerate the design process.
Example, the bottom right font in the OP is hand done. I did it because it would have taken more time going through similar sans serif techno looking fonts rather than just doing the linework and matching the personality the first time.
>>288057
sounds like a ton of work in a software I don't know jack shit about
sounds interesting tho, I'll definitely try it someday, but today is not this day.
what terms should I search for to find fonts similar to what I've done?
>>288060
Any vector software will work. Inkscape even.
>what terms should I search for to find fonts similar to what I've done?
No clue fampi - hit up the comic, decorative an possible script categories.
>>288060
Also, I find script or hand done fonts harder and more time consuming than type.
>>288065
Emblem I did for a local airsoft team, mostly a redesign of their old one.
For a beverage packaging project, not sure what else to do with it.
thoughts?
>>288067
I would recommend more contrast between your black and your colors.
>>288068
First thought is to do a distressed version.
Also, make up some "filler" content (IE: 100% organic, made in...."wicked good" "estd 1880", this looks like a brand-mark more than a packaging design piece.
Lat thought - I'm not sold on the supporting font, it's rather thick, prominent and difficult to read. (particularly on "barreled")
Shat this out in like 2 hours but I'm still not happy with the colors. Font doesn't match either but it's more of a placeholder
Also i have absolutley no formal training in GD so there is probably a bunch of other stuff wrong
>>288034
I have to make a logo for a small drone service company (terrain examination, event shooting, documentaries...), but I am blocked. How would you improve this sketch? (this is not my field, btw)
>>288136
I can’t read what it says, wich is not a good sign
>>288101
Generally you want to stay clear of gradients in logos. The colour choices you made are good assuming its for some kind of medical brand and the type looks fine. The emblem is too big though and the type placement creates a lot of dead space.
Its tempting to overdo things when you are inexperienced. Always best to keep things as simple as possible where logos are concerned. I just played with this simplified version very briefly to try and illustrate what I'm getting at.
Keep working on it, has potential.
>>288068
Looks like a barrel. Is it suppose to be a barrel?
>>288160
It's root beer.
So yeah, I'd assume so.
>>288163
dunno.
I read it as innadrone pretty much instantly.
still spitballing a fake company logo for my portfolio. possibly make an animation out of it. thoughts? what principles of gd did i hit or miss?
also thinking of making a font out of this
>>288167
Lacking context.
I like your faux interpretation but don't post stuff like this for your own sake.
It's one thing to photo a thumbnail, it's another to exquisitely illustrate a piece then photograph it.
What you've done is something in between and is inherently worthless an a little embarrassing.
>>288166
eeeeesh I want to give you a pass but it's tough.
Did you hand draw the letters? they are nice letters, they are just not reading well.
>>288212
Actually not. It's a font called "Sarina".
>>288211
Pretentious ass
>>288250
Think of it this way - your logo/mark is so insanely small, all you have is the the type, this type is kinda~sorta maybe tough to read... That might be okay if your brand mark/logo was really strong, but that's not the case.
>>288146
Yeah I see what you mean. Going to try to play with the cross a little more so it doesn't look shattered
what the font, please
>>288211
>>288136
were you going for something like this?
Hey, I just made a logo for a small company, usually I'm more into ads so I'm not sure how much should I charge 'em, I was thinking in the $100 range?, it took me around 13-15 hours of work from the initial sketches to the final logo and they were very satisfied.
>>288426
$100 / 15 hours = $6 / hour
Isn't that lower than minimum wage?
Come on man. You're worth more than that.
>>288428
Ehh thanks but how much exactly?, I haven't worked on logos since college, I don't know how the market is.
>>288433
Literally anything above $200 (very safe).
>>288426

>>288267
A flower? "Ant Claims"? Context bro - that said, trouble ahead, the widths in color separation are too thin for a good logo!! And I have to assume this is a logo - but I don't know what you're selling!!
>>288344
Micro Style or Microstyle I believe
Tattoo Concept. I have no tattoos - I didn't do any research - I just assumed.
>>288167
>>288211
He's a bit right about the context, for your portfolio the reviewers like that kinda of stuff for fake companies. But I think its an interesting design, especially the lowercase g and the space that it creates. I would play around with adding red to one of the circles on the g. Other guy was being a pretentious ass though.
>>288595
Really great concept. Looks dope but wayyy too much detail for a tattoo. Tattoos degrade over time, so the stars, the bark, the forest lines, even some of those branches will start blurring.
I see that exact image being great for the front cover of a diary or something like that.
tried to do some sort of wipEout style team logo
feel free to hate im only a tourist here
(still itd be nice to get some feedback so i can improve)
>>288627
The star feels out of place, otherwise it could work as a wipEout team logo, although very simplistic compared to most of the actual ones.
>>288253
>>288138
>>288163
>>288212
What are your thoughts on this alternative, guys?
>>288616
Excellent points - I should have done a little research before starting on it, oh well back to the drawing board.
>>288627
I didn't know what wipEout is, but I googled wipEout team logo - I like yours, but it looks more retro than the other stuff, the other stuff seems very sci-fi chic.
>>288639
This is a million times better, only thing that stands out is the logo looks like it's made of "C"s - this kind of throws me off because Cs seem unrelated to everything else.
Just made this for myself. What letters do they look like to you guys?
>>288650
NT?
>>288652
Damn. AK. Some others. I do like the bottom two since they also look like the word Ali (my name)
>>288664
Helvetica solves everything.
>>288664
I like the top left one
>>288667
How to make a forgettable design 101
>>288639
Soooo much better
>>288681
Helvetica is simple, clean, timeless.
I don't really know anything about logo design.
Looking at this, I feel like it made more sense for the road to be diagonal and the divergent road to be horizontal and have the text going 'down it' instead - but I cant be bothered to try it out.
Would appreciate any crit, I'm really interest in logo design, I just don't know any of the 'rules'.
>>288688
Dope! I tried to digitise it, would have looked better if I had the Bold Italic Didot font.
http://imgur.com/a/ZAKRE
>>288689
That's gorgeous. I still prefer the contrast of a modern serif though. It communicates consideration so much better than helvy. Plus it seems everybody's Behance logo is Helvetica or Akzidenz these days.
This is what I went with in the end. I like the non-obvious A and swashed K. Somewhere in between decorative and intelligent.
>>288704
Not bad! Your thinking is on the right track for sure.
I'd say the concept of divergence could be applied in subtler ways though. At the moment, the road highlights the TOP/BOTTOM asymmetry, so it looks like there's lots of wasted space above the word.
Try getting across the 'divergent' concept just by editing the word 'DIVERGE', and I'm sure you'll get something interesting, subtle, and more balanced.
>>288706
Thanks for the advice man. I knew there was amateur vibes running through it and you explained it perfectly. I'm gonna try some stuff out and hopefully make an improvement, especially that idea about getting the concept across with just the text.
>>288705
10/10 troll
you will win the internet for months
>>288721
Ha, you are allowed to have a different opinion m8, I won't get upset.
>>288595
Updated Tattoo concept with longevity in mind.
>>288802
I like it. Again, the amount of lines and their spacing would definitely result in a blurring over time.
What do you do these in illustrator?
>>288802
Some variations and fixed the mountains.
>>288806
Hmm I was hoping the spacing would help with longevity, so what's the secret? Just no details at all? Or are there prefered techniques?
I googled "tattoo design tips and techniques" and the results were more focused on getting a tattoo, not good design techniques.
I prefer draw, but yeah AI is a close enough answer.
>>288810
I mean the process is very slow and it depends on the person tattooing, how the individual takes care of their skin, etc.
I think as a designer you shouldn't worry too much. People will get whatever they want, especially if they are as nice as yours. If you want to design for longevity, keep a variety of thick and thin strokes. Your 'heavy' variation is still quite light with little contrast.
>>288810
I don't actually have a tattoo myself but I know loads of people who do. If you look at this pic (Not mine) you'll notice that the angel's wings and the bottom band of the crown, sitting above the coat of arms, are essentially completely lost in a blurry black.
Think of it like drawing with a fine liner onto very bleed-heavy paper.Your lines are too fine and precise.
But at the same time, there are plenty of artists who tattoo who do very detailed and fine piece, I'm guessing they just take the fading aspect as a necessary part of it and ignore it completely. Case in point:
img ur com/gallery/DZcyK
>>288810
Forgot to ask, how long does it take you to 'line' your scanned in drawings?
I'm just learning illustrator now and it's taking me a long long time to do pic-related, the image isn't important I'm just using it for practice.
>>288816
I've been using vector software of some kind for a long time, so my tool proficiency is high, for instance the first concept I posted took about 2 hours to vector.
The problem is very few ideas make it to vector form unadulterated, I spent 3ish hours growing >>288810 to >>288807 on top of the hour or so vectoring.
If I was recreating your project I would in that specific instance drop Draw and use Illustrator, so I could use the line width tool to build most of the objects effeciently.
>>288812
>>288814
Hmmm, I see...
>>288819
Yeah I had a feeling, your proficiency shows. So are you saying, on some level, that these things should take time and that illustrator is the right tool for the job for this? I just don't want to be wasting my time if there's better software to be using.
>>288650
NK
>>288821
Yes you are dead on, most techniques will simply take a fuck ton of time.
Here and there you will come up with or discover "shortcut" techniques or just ways to plan out and process your layout.. A big thing for me is planning my vector process while I'm sketching, I write little notes or techniques down with callouts where to implement them during vector process.
There's like a millions way to approach this stuff, I don't have a regular technique, I just try to think ahead these days.
Anyone have any tips on getting better with logo/brand/mark design? Is it one of those trial and error things?
>>288825
read logo design love by david airey (easy to find on google)
i guess it depends if it is for a client then you have to research and think of it like a tattoo it has to be meaningful and memorable if it is personal or for a friend you could experiment with type and make a bunch of drawings until something caught your eye
>>288825
I'm comfortable with Inkscape and illustrator, want to get better at conceptualizing and knowing when somethings good and finished
>>288826
Cool thanks for the rec I'll definitely check it out. Do you know if any of the MOOC like coursera have anything worthwhile?
>>288768
I like it
>>288847
Thanks. It means a lot
Another concept - thumbnail version.
>>288898
You realise a logomark is ideally legible when scaled down to sizes between 35 to 40px2 ? (And monochromatic)
What you've got there is an illustration
It looks alright though
>>288900
Oh right. Not my taste but it's executed alright I guess
>>288902
well it's just a thumbnail so far but I appreciate it
For Kojima Productions.
>>288898
You tell a good story with your illustrations. I reckon you could probably do some dope album / game covers lad
>>288944
>I have 1.89158 personalities
>>288945
Damn dude, that's really high praise coming from here...
I don't know, I look at my stuff compared to shit like Brian Steely's work and my shit feels like soulless garbage.
>>288898
I vectored to final concepts - win or lose I'm done with this one.
>>288995
*two final concepts
*drops mic on stage*
>>288996
I lied, here is the final. My pick at least.
and the final_final_final_final.png.jpg.dxf sold
>>288068
That's a great start. Now I think you need to push the barrel illustration furthe in both directions- simpler and more realistic.
On the simple end, you need greater contrast in your stroke weight. Just my opinion. Good work OP.
Not sure about the monkey's location
>>289150
Update with new font
>>289160
Interesting.
The font and the monkey do not go well together. Either round the monkey or sharpen the font. I like all of the options and I feel like you have to think about how you want the name to be read, and about the hierarchy of text-logo: Which one is more important?
The cross kinda clashes with the font so i'm trying something more subtle. Logo is supposed to be for a medical company
>>289150
>>289160
Like I was saying to the beetle guy - a trace does not pass muster - there's a shit ton to a good logo mark.
Personal example - I'm not a claimant of insane branding skills btw.
But a fish can't bend like this...but it looks right, this is what a mark is. Just make yours better.
>>289179
Even looking at this one myself it's too complex an overdone. Oh well, 90% of the garbage I see shoveled in real life is equally as fallible.
>>288664
bottom right
>>289048
>>288995
Awesome lineart, but really not a fan of the gradients or the colors, just make it black and white.
>>289166
I understood that it was for a medical company before I read it, so that’s cool
>>289194
Customer 100% adamant about wanting a gradient and color, I would have proffered 1 color line art too/
>>288688
Sexy.
Very n00by, but here's my logo for a company called 'Hide Timber Metal', what you guys think?
>>289237
forgettable
How about this for a longer one?
Hey guys, need some help making a logo for an instagram page that is based around interior design. Not being paid, its for a friend. Called 'Little bit of luxury' Thanx
>>289247
/gd/ is an incredibly nice board, we will giveadvice and constructive criticism to anyone, even if they're noobs or just idiots.
But don't fucking ask us to do a logo for free nigger do you ask for free food at restaurants?
>>289252
>289252
Well sorry for clogging the feed, considering i didn't actually ask for someone to do it all for me. ass
>>289253
You asked for help for a logo but offered no more infornation whatsoever as to how /gd/ could help you. Here, that is considered asking for free work and is very and harshly frowned upon. You need to help /gd/ help you, not expect us to reach out and help you on a project or hope you'll come back to a piece of work you could start off of.
Provide more information and quite possibly your own starting piece or example/reference in mind and we can go from there.
>>289252
I chuckled a bit.
Am I a GD yet?
>>289382
awwww, he understands us
>>288167
If you wanted to add colour, you might want to make the line weight larger. With the typography being so thin, the colouring almost feels like a mistake.
Also, your font height is too tall. The letters don't bold well when it feels like it's being stretched out.
Once you do that, then you might actually have an alright draft to start with.
>>289237
>>289246
If you are going to make a logo at least do something with it. What you just posted was initials printed in a generic font.
The second is the same thing as the first except this time you used two fonts and made it equally boring.
Why not trying to showcase the qualities that you want your company to represent, and what they do, and then sketch up some concepts.
And no, using a two fonts unedited is not a logo.
>>289048
Personally, I think you took out the best part of your original concept in >>288898
Use the two trees as a way to outline the diamond shape you are making. I would even try to experiment with not having the background at the top near the sun afterwards to see if you can replicate a diamond through the suggestive figure.
>>289160
I like the polygonal work that you are trying to represent. Fix the tail. It's too long and is way too awkward. All I can look at is how annoying that tail looks.
You can maybe try to curl it or put it closer to his back or legs, so long as it doesn't look like some sort of fishing hook an antique store might sell you.
Also, work with the ideas on creating a 3-d polygonal image or origami if you are trying to drive home the "polygon" feel.
Pic is of my logo iconography of a Tsuru, that I tried to obviously feature an origami feel to it.
>>289560
Unfortunately the customer wasn't interested in an evergreen style tree. But I agree with you!
>>288768
Is the mockup meant for customers who speak english? Or are they like a secondary customer? The font used for lobster sushi bar is not eye catching enough. I mean the icon obviously helps you imagine what it is, but walking down the street and seeing the sign, I would have to probably squint or do a double take just to read the sign in english.
>>288681
Better than a squiggly spaghetti monster that faintly resembles letters. A logo has to be legible, not interpretable.
>>289581
>Better than a squiggly spaghetti monster
you just offended a lot of pastafarians
I'm liking the shape of this, but having trouble with the logo. Originally the O was the same font as the other letters, but when i moved them closer together the O started to look too much like an 'a' because of the left side of the W making it look like the tail of the 'a'. Any suggestions? Can post a flat version of the name if liked
>>289601
Is the whole thing the logo? or is it a mockup of the logo, which is actually the 'Owth'? What's the box supposed to be?
>>289601
I find the "t" really bothers me. When you went to fuse the w and the t together, the line weight that they share seems to expand quite a bit.
Take an example of >>288688 when trying to merge letters. Look how you play with the font, and you may need to slice a bit off the letter as he did with the 'K'
Also, the wording seems a bit too bubbly to me.
If you don't like the weight of the "O", and want to show a thicker line weight, try using different shades to show depth.
>>289602
It's both really. The box is inspired by old school Techno label logos. And by that I mean i ripped it off from a photo of a Song Solid State sound system.
>>288344
microgamma is probably closest
>>288664
lol
