Well, as stated before, it's not new. I don't know when precisely it started though. While repeated words has been used before, I don't know if it was ever a proper trend. As far as art/design movements, it's just modernism and postmodernism. Pic related is an album cover for a post-hardcore band. This came out in '96

By Experimental Jetset. The event being advertised says it takes place in 2006 so I am assuming the poster was made then or slightly before.They have a lot of work with repetition like this. Experimental Jetset works exclusively in the Swiss or International Typographic Style. They were huge in the 90's and early 2000's. The Swiss style is much older than that though.

When listening to a repetitive beat, and there's some syncopation, something happens that wasn't expected but in hind site made sense, your brain lights up like a christmas tree. It's that balance between unexpected and ever so slightly predictable that works. Anticipation gives your brain an orgasm when there is finally a pay off. Repetition represents anticipation whether in music or in visual arts. Sometimes there is no pay off because the repetition doesn't end and it can have a slightly different effect, it can fall slightly flat (but not in a bad way). You could say that repetitions that change over time is what creates the novelty, or visually; repetitions that change over space

No I was just using google image search. Much of this stuff I remembered from seeing elsewhere and just had to search for it again. I was gonna post some contemporary stuff but haven't gotten around to downloading it. Most of what I was gonna grab is at trendlist tho. Just click repetition on the sidebar.
Other places to find repetition inspo is sports. Basketball, football (soccer), f1 racing all use it for on court/pitch/track advertising. You can also search wrapping paper. Repetition is used a lot in branded packaging like that which comes with a new pair of shoes.
